Zipsrifle
So today I was wondering. We essentially have 4 football fields with astroturf...sorry....TURF....for the football team at a very landlocked university. Where will the team practice? I'm assuming the RB is out, so we're down to three, the fieldhouse, the Lee Jackson pracitice field, and the stadium. In my mind we should look at eliminating that Lee Jackson practice field and give the students some more green space. Have the FB team practice at ICS and maybe have a few of the intramural games there too. Am I missing something here??

It cost a lot of money for that outdoor facility including the grass fields and lights. The new stadium should be a game day experience for the team and a perk for their hard work preparing for home games. That would also be a lot of wear and tear on the new turf. You have a practice field and the fieldhouse that can be used for practice. The stadium should be used for games.

Am I missing something here??from what i have seen in my time at the campus the last 2 years, the football team seems to practice in the fieldhouse more than anywhere else. this is probably a good idea as it leaves the outdoor practice field open for intramural sports for the students and a lot of time for other fall sports like soccer to practice. I think i could count on 2 hands the number of times ive seen the football team on the outdoor practice field.

They may practice more in the Fieldhouse but it's not that much more. It would be nice however to actually have some student use of that field as it basically is locked at all times and is only used for flag football intramurals....that's pretty lame i think. flipthezip
I was told on Saturday during the open house that they will be using the stadium to practice. In fact, they plan to use it for pre-season camp.
johnnyzip84
In the limited time I have been on campus over the last few years, I've seen the punters and kickers using the outdoor practice field at least 3 or 4 times.
Dave in Green
Given a choice, I don't know why you wouldn't want to pratice on the field where you're going to be playing. Familiarity with the sight lines, footing, and total environment can enhance the home field advantage. Wear and tear on the field surface might mean it has to be replaced more frequently. But that shouldn't be more costly than maintaining two outdoor fields instead of one. Much of the wear and tear on outdoor fields comes from weathering. So it makes sense to me to get more use out of the primary surface before it ages from weathering, and pay for more frequent replacement with money saved from not having to maintain and replace an outdoor practice field surface. And usually it is done after formal practice, and they do it on their own time. and rarely does a special teams coach go with them!
bandzip
The past couple of years the team has practiced depending on the weather. If it's nice/warm outside they practice on shrank field and the band is in the field house, which is well over 100 degrees when it's hot outside. If it's raining and/or cold the football team is indoors and the band is on the practice field. We had an issue a couple years ago where the soccer team had to cancel their training camp trip because of rain and there was no field for the band so we had band camp in the Rubber Bowl. I know the team never really had any practices there, but who knows what they'll do now since the Info will be right on campus.

Am I missing something here??1) I know there's always been a preference with some coaches to practice on the more-forgiving natural surfaces. 2) I'm also aware of situations where we wanted to practice on natural grass because that was the type of surface that we'd be playing on at an away game that particular week. Well, looks like it stays until the new soccer stadium is built with turf.
