MTSU loses three players to academics

Former Ezell-Harding standout Antoine Owens is one of three key MTSU football players who will miss the 2005 season because of academic trouble.

Owens, a sophomore who started two games and recorded 24 tackles at defensive end last season, was ruled ineligible. MTSU's leading tackler, linebacker Marcel Horne, and running back DeMarco McNair were also ruled ineligible because of poor grades.

Owens was set to compete with Sean Mosely for the starting right end position in fall camp.

Horne, a rising junior, made 66 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble at weakside linebacker.

McNair, a rising sophomore, had moved from safety to running back and rushed for 122 yards on 21 carries and scored two touchdowns last season. He also had a 13-yard catch.

McNair came out of spring practice listed as the starting tailback on the depth chart along with Eugene Gross.
