ZachTheZip Posted November 1, 2009 Report Posted November 1, 2009 The ladies didn't come out with the intensity needed to win a tournament game. They looked the same as they did during the regular season, while Miami took it to another level. Quote

And the fact that it was Miami (MIAMI!) makes it that much worse! Coach Pfau, you have a good group of youngsters, now it's time to reach the next level. 2010 needs to be the club's breakout year. They were picked to finish #11 of 12 in the conference and ended up tied for 2nd. Numerous records were broken during the season. They had never made the conference tournament and not only did they make the tournament, they hosted in the first round. Keep in mind, this post-season game is one that this team was never expected to play! Don't all these accomplishments qualify as a "breakout season?"Instead of dwelling on the loss, let's celebrate the great season and the future of the Women's soccer program! Quote

ZachTheZip Posted November 2, 2009 Report Posted November 2, 2009 Z.I.P., this year was the next level for the program. It was far more than anything they have ever accomplished in the short 9-year history of the team.I would be content with finishing in the top 4 in the MAC every year, maybe making a run in the MAC tournament every other year. When that becomes the norm, you can start thinking about moving on to wining the MAC consistently and then worry about the NCAA.I think that next season the team will take a step back, but if the coach can limit it to a minor one then this season can be used as a stepping stone.I think the success of the men's team is helping the women's team to improve. You see it often at basketball schools like UConn. Akron is becoming known as an elite Soccer school and that reputation can benefit both teams. Quote

But hey, was the 11th-place prediction realistic? I think we should have been placed right about the middle of the pack -- and we exceeded that with a third place finish in the regular season. That IS to be congratulated and celebrated. But let's not spend too much time patting ourselves on the back. This team has a lot of work to do to get where it can, and in my opinion should be -- a MAC title contender every year, and a team that like at least our men's bb, is capable of surprising the experts by winning in the NCAA tourney. Zack, I'm looking at the roster, and I see only two seniors who were big cogs in this team's success -- Li'l Britni who is one of the top players in our 9-year history without a doubt, and Kate Ferrara who was a stalwart in the center of the field. A couple of others contributed, but look at what we have back next year -- beginning with our possible MVP GK in junior-to-be Jen Wolbert. Rachel Phillip, Wise, Petrole, Clark, Cloutier -- these ladies are the makings of a contender in 2010. All they have to do is believe from the start, and when they get to the post-season they'll have the experience and mental toughness needed to play to be as should be the habit in the Land of the Zips. 2zip2 Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 Heather Rains will be the player that they will really miss. She was the captain and leader of the defense for this team. Quote
soccerbirdie16 Posted November 3, 2009 Report Posted November 3, 2009 I think we need to remember that this team is only in it's 9th season. Until this year - the team has been near the bottom of the MAC - just a fact. If you have actually seen the team play over the 9 years - you will see what better soccer they have been playing over the last season. What has been accomplished on the field has been amazing! As the women's team continues to grow - so will their confidence. When you can consistently play good soccer and win games - you will draw the recruits and build a stronger base for the team, added depth that they need. And by the looks at the recruits listed for 2010 - that is already starting to happen!I like the fact that this team is taking on tough out-of-conference competition. That is how you get better - play better teams! Sure, you can pad your record with wins against mediocre teams - but I'd rather watch them take the challenge.I agree about Heather Rains - she was a leader back there this year. I enjoyed watching her play! The captains and senior class did a good job this year - on and off the field. Quote
