ZachTheZip
I saw this on the BigSoccer.com forum and it got me thinking. Could Bunbury win the Hermann as a Sophomore? He has 14 goals and 3 assists and he will have plenty more games to add to that. Could he beat Zakuani's total from last season?Watching him every home game and a few away games, he hasn't developed his shot as much as he can, and is relying on his size and athleticism to overpower the opposing defense. If he can work on his shot he could become an extremely lethal forward, way more dangerous than he is right now. If he can do that before the end of this season he would almost certainly go pro, and get selected early in the draft.

I have to feel that Teal -- more than Steve -- needs another year of seasoning before he can be assured of being a Generation Adidas initiate. However -- I believe MLS makes that determination independently do they not? IOW, the players who are considered of that class are informed of their position by MLS in order to help them decide. The Hermann is another issue altogether. As I wrote on Razor's blob, he has to already be near the top of the list, based on his leading the #1 team in the nation. If he gets even CLOSE to the 20 goal mark and what Zaki scored last year, there's a possibility a sympathy vote will kick in based on Steve being robbed last year. Call it the Paul Kennedy effect, after the Soccer America writer who keeps saying Steve was the Herman winner.NOW -- as far as our underclassmen who could make themselves available for the draft? Look at our junior class first. The two midfielders are prime candidates. P.S.: I did like the comment on the Big Soccer board: The problem for Caleb might be one of "over-recruiting". lol! He is a dangerous player and he scores goals. However, if you watch him during games, he is a blackhole with the ball. He either gets a shot or loses the ball; he rarely looks to set up his teammates. With Zakuani, you knew you were going to get a dangerous ball on goal almost every time he touched the ball. With Teal, it is hit or miss. Additionally, he has very little in the way of "moves." He beats defenders simply because he is faster and bigger than them. Individually, Teal is a great player. However, at the level Akron is playing, he could make them far better by looking to pass more than he does. If he were to start playing balls the way Nano and Ampi do, I would fully support his Hermann candidacy.
