Huggins could have succeeded as a football coach
MORGANTOWN — The way Bob Huggins tells the story it was 20 years ago now. He had coached basketball at Akron for five years, had built the program into a mid-major power, and was getting itchy. The job in Cincinnati had come open and he was looking into it.That’s when his athletic director made a call to the Cincinnati athletic director.“They were both former football coaches,” Huggins said. “My AD in Akron told him, ‘You need to hire this guy. He’s a football coach coaching basketball.’”That may not have sealed the deal, but it didn’t hurt.Which makes you wonder. What if?
What if, indeed. Why did our AD shop him out to Cinci? Let's fire our winningest football coach while simultaneously offering up our winningest basketball coach (at the time), and replace them with Gerry Faust and Coleman Crawford. Brilliant!

Faust was hired as football coach to guide our transition to 1-A in 1985, several years before Huggins left to take the job at Cincy.

Huggins leaving was set in motion the minute we decided to go 1-A.

It didn't help that our OVC automatic bid to tourny was eliminated when the FB program 'moved up' to 1-A unsuccessfully if I may add because we haven't won SQUAT! :(
