ZachTheZip
Do they not understand DNS or redirection? Why is it that I have to type in the "www" subdomain to access the site? Why can't I just type in "uakron.edu" into my address bar and go to my university's website? This isn't 1999 anymore.gozips.com doesn't have this problem. Ive asked about it before to our department head and I didn't get a clear answer as to why and if it would ever be fixed. If I were to hazard a guess, however, I believe that the DNS server has issues with resolving the name without a subnet identifier, especially with all the servers and subdomains we run. Gozips.com is a separate entity and is outside the control of UA. Its a site that is managed by the Athletics department and hosted outside of UA (unlike uakron.edu which is hosted on UA mainframe servers). ZachTheZip
Huh. Now it works.I understand that there could be issues when you have so many subdomains to keep track of, but this is something that should always have a high priority. When people want to learn more about a website, they go to the top-level domain first, and use the navigation on the home page to find what they are looking for. It's something that can affect prospective students' perceptions about the school. If they get a brochure or something with the URL on it, they probably wouldn't bother typing in the www part of it. nobody does that anymore. The website is the first impression that a lot of people have of the university. What would it say if the first thing that happens when you type in the url is something like this?It just doesn't look good. It's just one of the small things that seem to add up until you get students holding conversations about how the university can't do anything right. I'm tired of hearing complaints like that. tbozeglav
To be honest, I didn't even know it worked...What it appears they did was did a redirect to www.uakron.edu. If you ask me, thats the best way to do it. www.uakron.edu is, in my opinion, a little bit more proper and makes sure people don't break any links that may be using the www.Thinking about it some more, I know for a fact it must be a subdomain issue. I know there are at least 3 different public webservers and they tend to get into hissy-fits when they dont communicate properly. If you are careful enough when browsing the site, youll actually see 3 different versions. The newest one (uakron.edu homepage style) is run on a dotCMS server, the old UA homepage and everything styled like it runs on a custom webCMS system programmed by a UA factulty member, and then anything that shows up with the subdomain www3. is a webpage predating everything else. ZachTheZip
A redirect is such a simple fix to an annoying problem. Whatever reason they had for not doing that long ago, I'm glad it's not an issue any more.
Z.I.P.
Okay -- I admit, I was going to spoof this whole techno-foible thing with some snarky comment along the line of "Yeah -- everytime I hit Akronu.edu I get some ISP site holder. What's up with that?". BUT -- this really got me -- try Googling Akronu.edu and see the 848,000 hits you get. The misuse/miseducation of the proper name of the university is amazing and huge. My favorite has to be the Encyclopedia Britannica article reprint titledProenza Aims to Enhance Akron U's Visibility. Sorry -- that "insert link" device isn't working again! The URL is: http://http//www.britannica.com/bps/additi...n-Us-visibilityWouldn't you think, at least the PRESIDENT would know the name of the place???
