Zipsrifle
We were able to make the trip to the range this past weekend, and there were a LOT of people down there to watch the match....the most I've ever seen. People were actually standing shoulder to shoulder to watch. Quite a few Rifle Alumni were able to make it to the range too, it was a really good weekend. The problem with spectating a rifle match is that there isn't a whole lot to see if you don't have a scope. Regardless, I'm sure it was exciting for the competitiors. This is what happens when you put the football stadium on campus, there are a lot of additional benefits for the other teams. Now that I think if it, maybe it's time to start planning for a "large crowd" at the rifle matches on football weekends. It might not be a bad idea to plan for some additional seating....just clear out the back of the range and bring in additional chairs. Also, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to put cameras at each point and project those to some TV screens so that others could watch. Any idea how much it would cost to put 10 small cameras in??? Might be a nice seinor project for a student on campus. Anyway, the Zips win their own invitational and the scores look to be steadily improving. Newt also seems to be close to nailing down the top team for each gun. Here's the press release, Enjoy!Date: November 7, 2009 Event: Akron Rifle Invitational Akron Rifle Finishes on Top at InvitationalGerevics and Szabo lead Akron to Victory This weekend Akron was host to three other notable Olympic rifle competition teams. Present was The University of the Sciences of Philadelphia, Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. When the smoke cleared, Akron emerged as the dominant team. Coach Newt Engle was very pleased with the team performance, especially since the team had to perform without the assistance of one of their top guns, Sarah Benjamin, who was recovering from the flu. In the smallbore rifle division sophomore Zac Szabo lead the charge and finished alone in the top slot earning the top gun award by firing a 567 out of a possible 600. Ed Ryznar (565) of USP took second and Lucan Wier (559) rounded out the top three. Akron teammates sophomore Ryan Stein and freshman David Brummond tied for the forth slot with like 558,s with Brummond winning the tie breaker. “No doubt about it,” states coach Engle, “we left the door open for Rose to take the lead in smallbore, but thankfully did not take advantage of the opportunity. Although Zac did a good job for us, the fact is we still need to get our smallbore under control. But the Zips did have control of their Air Rifle’s demonstrated by the stellar score of 2316 which ties the school record set in 2007. And again, the squad managed to do this minus one of their best, Sarah Benjamin. Stepping up to the plate and tying her career best performance, junior Beca Gerevics earned the top gun award with an impressive 582. Although earning the top slot was not easy as USP’s Ed Ryznar (582) tied Gerevics with Gerevics wining the tie breaker. Also breaking into the elite 580’s, Akron teammate’s sophomores Ryan Stein and Jenna Compton each fired a 580 with Stein winning the tie breaker. “We continue to be on track with the air rifle,” states coach Engle, “having three people in the 580’s is great, but seeing our top performers gaining consistency is exactly what we need.”Next Saturday the 14th of November, the Zips will travel to Virginia to face off against the fighting Keydets of the Virginia Military Institute. The match will begin at 9am on the VMI shooting range. NewtNote: I am sooo proud. Not of just our team on the range, but the team behind the team. We continue to be the envy of the MAC when it comes to our support. The visiting teams were in awe to the amount of visitors and supporters we had attend this match. From rifle alum giving tours, to UA administrators, friends, fans and a plethora of Zips parents. I can only say the same thing the other teams said, WOW! A special thanks to the Fabijance family who brought enough food to feed the army of competitors and stayed the whole day to assure everyone was satisfied.SMALLBORE....................................AIR RIFLE1 Szabo Zac UA Gold 567.................1 Gerevics Rebecca UA Gold 5822 Ed Ryznar USP-Mx 565................. 2 Ed Ryznar USP-Mx 5823 Weir Lucas RHIT 559.................... 3 Stein Ryan UA Gold 5804 Brummond David UA 558.............. 4 Compton Jenna UA Gold 5805 Stein Ryan UA Gold 558................ 5 Brad Driscoll USP-Mx 5766 Gerevics Rebecca UA Gold 557...... 6 Jones Brittany UA Gold 5747 Brad Driscoll USP-Mx 556.............. 7 Carter Jimmy UA 5738 Nelson Luke UA Gold 556............... 8 Nelson Luke UA Blue 5729 Fabijance Josh UA Blue 554............ 9 Mayhew Edward RHIT 57110 Ashbrook Rebekah UA Blue 553.... 10 Brummond David UA 56711 Dietrich Nicole UA 552................. 11 Weir Lucas RHIT 56612 Telljohann Brian RHIT 552 ...........12 Martin Allisa UA 56413 Carter Jimmy UA 552 ..................13 Butler Tristan UA 56114 Mayhew Edward RHIT 551........... 14 Szabo Zac UA Blue 56115 Adler Derek RHIT 549................. 15 Ashbrook Rebekah UA Blue 55816 Compton Jenna UA 547............... 16 Adler Derek RHIT 55817 Butler Tristan UA Blue 544........... 17 Telljohann Brian RHIT 55518 Courtney Cavalieri USP-Mx 538.... 18 Fabijance Josh UA Blue 55519 Jones Brittany UA Blue 536.......... 19 Dietrich Nicole UA 55020 Martin Allisa UA 533..................... 20 Courtney Cavalieri USP-Mx 54921 Reames Jessica RHIT 515............. 21 Reames Jessica RHIT 54622 Julie Vavreck IUP 514.................. 22 Lee Parker RHIT 54423 Glen Hirsh USP-Mx 509................. 23 Godwin Malhon RHIT 53824 George Yauneridge IUP 505.......... 24 Dimon Katy RHIT 53725 Godwin Malhon RHIT 502.............. 25 Glen Hirsh USP-Mx 52626 Dimon Katy RHIT 492.................. 26 Nicole Churchill USP-Wo 51127 Adler William RHIT 492................ 27 Adler William RHIT 51028 Jake Snyder IUP 484................... 28 Julie Vavreck IUP 50629 Kyle Pruitt IUP 474...................... 29 Josh Steiner IUP 49830 Nicole Churchill USP-Wo 471........ 30 Kyle Pruitt IUP 49531 Josh Steiner IUP 470 ...................31 Carrie Hightman USP-Wo 48632 Summerfield Abram RHIT 466 ..... 32 Carrie Kwok USP-Wo 48033 Allen Whisler USP-Mx 461 ............33 Summerfield Abram RHIT 47834 Tim Wu USP-Mx 447.................... 34 Shaina Kulp USP-Wo 46635 Shaina Kulp USP-Wo 427............. 35 George Yauneridge IUP 46536 Carrie Hightman USP-Wo 424....... 36 Kyle Leath USP-Mx 45837 Olivia Brown USP-Wo 416............. 37 Mike Sanders IUP 41038 Mike Sanders IUP 351.................. 38 Jake Snyder IUP 401Team ResultsUA GOLDSmallbore.......Air.......Total2238.............2316..... 4554RHITSmallbore.......Air.......Total2211.............2236.....4447UA BLUESmallbore.......Air.......Total2187.............2246.....4433USP-MxSmallbore.......Air.......Total2168.............2233.....4401IUPSmallbore.......Air.......Total1977.............1964.....3941USP-WoSmallbore.......Air.......Total1738.............1943.....3681
zippyrifle32
smallbore scores are still WAY too low to make the NCAA tourney. IF anyone qualifies this year, it would be an individual in the air rifle event. The air scores are getting closer to where they need to be, but overall as a team just a smudge too low to get the team there. One or two people could put on a good show during qualifications and make the trip to TCU in March.
Zipsrifle
Will the NCAA's always be at TCU or will they be somewhere else in the future? Newt explained the whole setup for the championships to me and I would really like to go to one.
zippyrifle32
They rotate around every year. There are certain range size requirements that must be met for a team to qualify as a host venue... and Akron's range is too small. Plus, more and more schools are going to electronic targets so without those, a school won't get a chance to host either.
