Zwick vs. Frye

Unfortunately, I have not cancelled my ABJ subscription yet as I continue to hope they will wake up and realize a sizable University exists down the road.

I have uneasy feeling that rather then giving significant press to Frye -- Proven senior, potential NFL draft pick -- that I will be seeing plenty Zwick in my morning reads. Is this possible ? Can it be avoided ? No matter what Akron's marketing team does will it make a difference ? What a shame. The Zwick/OSU press machine has already started to roll this week. What does it take for the ABJ to wake up, a potential NFL QB is down the road from you --- Cover it  Is anyone there hearing me ?

Maybe tommorrow, it will be Frye's turn (of course, that would probably do it until the season starts) or maybe I'll hear about Zwicks first tight spiral on a 5 yard out pattern -- the only pass he can throw accurately  and the spiral wont be that tight

I should just cut my losses now and ditch that paper. It just kills me the lack of originality they have. :wall:

Local newspaper coverage by column inches for the Zips if we measured it would put the

Beacon Journal third. The Plain Dealer comes in second. The Canton Repository has

the honor of giving the Zips the greatest coverage.

If you subscribe to the Beacon Journal ... shame on you.

Strange that we now have to sign in to read the ABJ online. How long before these folks

determine that disgruntled non-paying Zips fans do not deserve to read their precious rag even online?

Of course Zwick will get more coverage than Charlie. The ABJ actually has a writer assigned full time to covering the Buckettes. The last time the ABJ had a full time

reporter assigned to the Zips was Roland Queen. Eventually the ABJ split Roland's time between the Zips and local high school coverage.

I agree that Zwick is no great QB. He never will be. He will throw the ball to anyone down field who has their arms open. He had the same probelm in high school. And, its not about being under pressure. Zwick misfired plenty of times when he was under any defensive pressure.

Let's lay the blame for not promoting Frye as a great QB squarely where it belongs. Right on the shoulders of the UA athletic department. Specifically the SID office and also on the athletic director's office. All the stationery coming out should have #5

picture in an upper corner or a quite visible watermark of Charlie poised to throw.

There is no way you can compare Frye and Zwick. Charlie is a three year college starter rated near the top of the list for QB's in the nation. Justin is a redshirt soph. looking to crack the starting lineup for the first time. So please don't hate on Zwick. Yes you may have your pesonal thoughts about him but at least let him play in a game to prove himself. The only reason the Beacon will be all over Zwick is cause of the color of his uniform. The ABJ will always have some problem with the University of Akron and never give them the proper coverage they need. And please don't blame the SID for this. There is nothing anyone can do at the universiy to change the way the ABJ feels about them. So either get used to seeing OSU all over the beacon in the next coming season or just don't read the ABJ.

Zwick is another shining example of how Ohio talent either gets shipped off to an out of state school, or in this case, gets buried and unused at OSU.

There is no debating Zwick's talent. His numbers in high school were mammouth. The problem is that he committed to a program where he has not, to this point, been able to prove himself in game situations. Now, don't get me wrong, he may still be a bust in college. But a kid with his numbers and apparant talent should have been starting or the number one backup as a true freshman, not redshirted and playing with reserves. In his freshman year, zwick had to fight for the job against a senoir and two year starter, a junior who was the heir apparant and I believe 2 other true freshamn quarterbacks who were all promised the same thing "you're our man."

OSU hordes the talent, they do it for no ther reason but to sustain their stronghold as "THE" ONLY premier D-1 school in Ohio. Tons of talent head to Columbus where they get flushed down the :john: Rothlesberger is a shining example of what "can" be. HE was heavily recruited by OSU and may have been stuck on the back burner like Zwick had he chose to go that route. But he was smart, chose Yuppie U and now will probably be the second overall pick in the NFL draft.

I, for the life of me, cannot understand why a player would chose to go to OSU and fight for a position with 3-4 other guys who are just as good if not better than you. There are many other D-1 schools in Ohio where they could go and start!

Well said JP. I have always thought the same thing myself.

I would much rather play and start for 3 -4 years than ride the bench and play one season.

Hopefully JD and staff and get some of those kids to see this and have them wear blue and gold instead of scarlet and gray.

I saw Zwick several times in High School and no doubt the kids got some talent. His accuracy downfield and decision making can be questionable but potential - he's got it. At OSU, it doesn't take much at QB to win with the supporting cast (ie Krenzel) so I expect them to do well as always. That combined with Zwick being a somewhat local kid could be deadly for Zip coverage in the ABJ. You may have hit my point right on the mark -- win, lose, NFL draft pick, UA marketing.... It may not matter to ABJ. OSU will always get top billing there and any other paper but it is hard to swallow being buried on page D9 in the paper down the road. The problem I think is that UA needs those guys on the wagon somehow to get people excited around here and into the Bowl/JAR. Hate it or Hate it - it is the local paper, has reach into a fan base and somehow needs to be used to our advantage.

That is until ZipsNation has thousands of members

Some day over a beer, I will tell anyone who wants to hear how a young man by the name of Jessie Kline from Upper Arlington HS (a stud running back ) turned down offers from Stanford, Michigan, Notre Dame, Northwestern and one other place to play for the Pukeeyes. He was recrutied by one John Cooper. I know its the real deal because hsi dad told me the story. In that stoiry is the answer to your question. It has just a little to do with being a "Buckeye" . Its a large club.
