Blue and Gold Weekend Set For April 16-18

Found this over on GoZips.com - sounds like a lot of fun. Wonder if this will be the only Spring Football game this year? The 16th sounds kind of early.

Zips football, men's soccer, baseball and softball highlight weekend of family entertainment on the UA campus.

April 1, 2004

A football and a men's soccer scrimmage, baseball and softball Mid-American Conference games, and an outdoor concert highlight the inaugural Blue and Gold Weekend scheduled for April 16-18 on The University of Akron campus. All of the on campus sporting events are free to the public.

The 72 hours of action gets underway at 3 p.m. on April 16 (Friday) as the Zips baseball team plays host to rival Can't State at Lee Jackson Baseball Field.

At 7 p.m. Friday evening, first-year football head coach J.D. Brookhart and his gridiron Zips take to the Lee Jackson Soccer Field for the first of two spring scrimmages. The intrasquad session marks the halfway point of the program's spring training camp. The team returns 14 starters from last season's 7-5 team, including Heisman Trophy candidate senior quarterback Charlie Frye. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive a free 2004 football schedule magnet, courtesy of Charles Chips.

The events of day one, wrap up at 9 p.m. with the first ever Blue and Gold Step-Off in Rhodes Arena. Over 20 university and high school step-teams from around northeast Ohio will compete for a pair of $500 cash prizes. Admission for the event is $10 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the UA Athletics Diversity Scholarship Fund, which will be awarded on stage at 10 p.m.

The excitement continues on April 17, with Zips Super Saturday III presented by Cedarwood Village Apartments. The festivities commence at 10 a.m. with an athletics open house. Fans are invited into Rhodes Arena, as Director of Athletics Mike Thomas will present his "State of the Program Address". Members of the Zips' coaching staff will also be on hand to give updates on their programs.

At 11 a.m. on Saturday fans will have an opportunity to see the Zips men's soccer program in action as they scrimmage against Duquesne on Lee Jackson Soccer Field in the Lending Hand Financial Spring Soccer Classic. The game serves as the kickoff of the program's 50th anniversary.

The sports action continues at 2 p.m. on Saturday when the baseball team continues its three game series with Can't State. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a free schedule magnet, courtesy of Charles Chips.

Saturday concludes on Lee Jackson Field with Zips Jam, featuring musical acts Mo Shambo and 2 B Lo. Admission for the event is $10 per person, with all proceeds benefiting the UA Athletics Diversity Scholarship Fund.

The Blue and Gold Weekend finale comes Sunday when the baseball team wraps its three game series with Can't State at 1 p.m. on Lee Jackson Baseball Field, while at the same time the UA softball team faces the Golden flushes at Firestone Stadium.
