Zipsrifle
I'm very sorry that it has taken me nearly a week to post this. It's been a busy week for me, but that really isn't a good excuse. I think that it is truly amazing that Newt has been able to put together such a successful program. It has been a lot of hard work by him and others and this team deserves all the attention it can get. I know the pieces are there to make it to the National Championship match, they just need to fall into place. Well, UA Rifle soundly defeated University of Sciences in Philadelphia this past weekend. It appears that there are finally 4 shooters pulling away from the peloton in smallbore. I'm sure it makes Newt's job easier to pick teams, but IMO, a lot of intrateam competition is a good thing. The Akron "Gold" SB team came as close as you can and not make it to that elusive 2300 threshold with a 2299. In Air Rifle, the team is still bunched around the same score. Stephanie Elmore shot an outstanding 582, and helped the Akron "Blue" team top the "Gold" team again. In the end, it all added up to a buttkicking of USP as UA "Gold" beat USP by 241 points and "Blue" beat them by 225 points. Great job Zips. Next up is Morehead state. For those of you who've followed my rifle rant for a while, I really despise Morehead. It all dates back to a time when one of my team members was at the National Matches at Camp Perry. A shooter from Morehead laughed at her when she said she shot for Akron. We were laughing later in the year when we handed it to them! So, Rifle team, PLEASE take down Morehead tomorrow for an old-alum! PRESS RELEASE Date: November 12, 2005 Location: The University of Akron Event: Akron -vs- The University of the Sciences in Philadelphia USP falls to Akron Rifle This weekend the Zips hosted a rifle match against The University of The Sciences in Philadelphia. Akron chalked up another win by finishing ahead of USP 4580 to 4339. The Zips who have been lagging a little in smallbore really turned it on for this match. Freshman hot shot Melissa Lussier lead the charge with a 579 out of 600 including another perfect 200 prone. This gave Melissa match winner honors only one slim point ahead of USP Michelle Bauer (578). Teammate and co-captain Megan Reinking rose to the top of the smallbore list with an impressive score of 575. And the rest of the team equally knuckled down and pushed out some very nice scores. Even though the air team score fell off slightly, some individual efforts need to be recognized. Sophomore Stephanie Elmore came out of nowhere and won high match honors by posting a 582 out of a possible 600. This score ties Elmore’s personal best and eked her 2 points ahead of USP Michelle Bauer (580). The rest of the team performed well, but just a point or two off their averages. And at the national level this team is performing, those couple of points are needed to stay on top. What is needed now is for the team to start producing “A†game performances with both rifle’s at the same time. Little doubt this will be the goal for the next couple of matches. “This is still one of our high matches of the season, but my athletes and I both know what we need to do.†states coach Newt Engle, “I believe every one of these athletes have what it takes to take us all the way.†This coming weekend, Akron rifle will test their skills for the 5th weekend in a row. This match will be on the road at Morehead State University in Kentucky. Morehead is a member of the Western Intercollegiate Rifle Conference (WIRC) and is posting scores near the same level as Akron. This match may set the trend for the remainder of the WIRC season which will conclude in February 06. The match will start at 9:00 am at the Morehead shooting range located on campus in the Button Building.
