Wally B Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Ok Zip fans! This could prove to be the most important week for Akron since our move to D1a, and yet the board is silent on the subject. Consider the following talking points *This was supposed to be a rebuilding year and expectations were low. *Yet we are still in contention for the east title! *Beat Can't and we are bowl elligble for the second year in a row! *Toledo and Boring Green play this Tuesday night, so we'll know our potential then! *If BG loses we are clearly in the drivers seat against Can't! * Official NCAA stats had the RB at 40%+ capacity/game prior to a Tuesday night game after we were blanked by Army. We are now down to 36% after 4 games (avg. 11,381) This is MUCH better than the 2,000/game we had in the Faust era! *The worst in the nation is RICE @ 14% capacity! *Even if we lose the MACC, the EAST title will give us local exposure, and better attendance will follow the better team we developed this year! In JD we trust/Fear the ROO! Piss on the Couch Potatoes who sit home and complain about our woes. Get off you butt and go to the game, or shut-up and attend Can't State (you're kind are welcome there)! Enough of the excuses, Zips Nation is Akron's band wagon, Can't is our rival, and a Championship could be on the line. What more do we want? This is our WEEK, let's hear some BANTER! Quote
Quickzips Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Hey man, I'm psyched. I'll be there with 9 friends/family members. Beat Can't, nothing else matters. Quote
zipboy Posted November 20, 2005 Report Posted November 20, 2005 Seldom does a team get a second chance and rarely if ever a 3rd chance. We have a decent shot to have these games go our way and get a 3rd chance. I hope the team is ready. The way they played last week, Can't will be lucky to cross midfield. Even if things don't go our way, seniors can end their careers in style. As good as I feel about our chances, I remember my jr year at Akron, the lone winning season in anything while I was there except soccer. Can't had the longest losing streak in the country, game was at Can't. I went with some buddies from both Akron and Can't. First drive, I said 5 plays we will score. Well we didn't, Can't won 20-16 and students tore the goal post down. My second Can't football memory when I was in school was the next year when Akron was supposed to win the MAC. Pete Cordeil was the Can't coach at the time and before the game said that Akron had an unfair advantage because they have lower standards than Can't so they could get more athletes. For the one time ever a Gerry Faust team did not dissapoint as Akron rolled 42-7. Other great memories, the last win of the year in 99 when Matt Zuercher cleared an alley for Butchie on the game winning score and there was a rumble after the game. That game was also the greatest win in Syracuse history! How about in 2000, Dwight Smith's last game, quite possibly the most dominating defensive player in Zips history. I think that Dwight returned 2 balls for scores and caused another fumble at the Can't goaline. Or about in 97 when we almost blew a 45-7 4th quarter lead. Regardless of what happens earlier in the week, Thursday should be special. How many yards does BB need for 1000? Go Zips! Quote
Buckzip Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 We need to put on a great show on TV, We need the exposure to help put together another great recruiting class. Quote
RACER Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 buckzip not to sound negative, but i doubt many people will be watching at 10 a.m. on espnu. the marketing dept took a gamble ,and got screwed by espn. i don't have a problem with the game on thanksgiving if they are going to keep it there. if it's only going to be for one year then it was a bad idea. we traded in a guarenteed 30k crowd for? espnu? Zipsrifle Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 F TV man, you need to be there to see a @$$beating! I'll break this up throughout the week. Talking point #1: Yes this was "Supposed" to be a rebuilding year, and IMO, it was. We either played like All Stars or didn't showup. Had we brought our "A" game everytime, there wouldn't be any doubt as to if we were going to be at Ford Field on Dec. 1st. I think there was a LOT of learning that went on this year. To come out of this season with a trip to Detroit means we really have lady luck smiling on us. That is something we haven't had in the past. I'll be sad to see Biggs and Rohr go, but excited to see what that stellar recuriting class produces. Some great things got started this season too, like a Student section! AK-Rowdies are growing fast too! So, do ya think Cribbs and Frye will be at the game on Trs? They both put in good performances today. Can you believe I get 1100 AM in Flint! Oh, Yea.... Quote
UAM Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Point of order, the "choice" was Wednesday at 1 p.m. or Thursday at 10 a.m. Playing earlier in the year was NOT an option at any time. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 Playing earlier in the year was NOT an option at any time. From now on,it should be. For a team that has trouble putting butts in seats, how can a game that has generated more excitement than I've seen in 11 years following Akron and nearly sold out for two straight years (when it was the first game of the year) NOT be an option???? zipper Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 That one's easy - because Akron is in a conference, and the conference office has a lot of say-so, I believe. Quote
RACER Posted November 21, 2005 Report Posted November 21, 2005 id like to know the whole story about playing on thanksgiving. was really pressure on Can't and akron to play the game on thanksgiving,or is this a bunch of bull.somebody's got to take some blame.obviously we will have to wait for the gate numbers to see how much money akron is going to lose on attendance. i think both parties saw the opportunity to play. leauge office /uam espn which was good, but then espn backed out.hopefully they learned a tuff lesson.
