xu9697 Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Let me first say that I have been a supporter of his, and by benching him I: A. Have not given up hope completely (though have more doubts now than ever) B. Don't think you "ruin" him. Looking at the whole picture: Nicely is obviously struggling. He is not seeing things (as evidence by the horrific pick 6 TD) and making poor choices (the "fumble push"). Having him sit and watch can, and has, helped young QBs at times. If Ianallo presents it to him correctly, it doesn't have to mean the end of his starting career here. It could give him a chance to see things that he may not be seeing while he was out there. It may give him a chance to understand the offense a bit better within the game. As for Rodgers and why the timing is right= he ran well against OU, our competition for this week. OU is also the team that injured him= give him a chance to play against the team that took him out. He is a year removed from the injury, and most "experts" say it takes at least a year to heal. Team needs a boost. Team needs something different to see out there on the field. Team is coming off a loss to its rival. I can't imagine a more perfect time during THIS season to give Rodgers a chance (and, inherently, to maybe give Nicely a chance to take-it-all in). Quote
ditchrider1 Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 We need to get a QB who can throw decent but can run like hell. Put them in the spread(which I have in the past hated and still kind of do) and let them sling it or run it ala Denard Robinson @ Michigan. Someone had a great post on ZN about the talent needed to run the pro-style(which we cannot get here) and how a quick turnaround can be done via the spread. This is a bad conference with bad teams...always will be, and I think team speed and a good defense can win multiple league titles. Lets go get a really fast JUCO QB, shelve the pro-style and win some games next year. Quote

Pro or spread can be succesful if you have the right talent, good coaching and good execution. Quote
skip-zip Posted October 11, 2010 Report Posted October 11, 2010 Again....I think the biggest factor in putting Matt in there now is that he only has 18 games of eligibility left. In a wasted season, we need to get a good chance to evaluate him (he's only played 2 full games for us) and see if he can get us over the hump until we can get a capable QB in here via recruiting by 2012. I am also hopeful for an offensive spark since Matt helped us put 42 points on the board last year in his only two full games, against good teams, with only one day to prepare. And he ads a dimension to our offense that we don't have right now. Which also makes me wonder why he hasn't been sent out there yet when we've been running those Wildcat formations!!! I can't see how we have anything to gain by waiting any longer. I don't think PN is having a problem "seeing the field" as much as he's just continually struggling to throw a catchable ball consistently enough to be effective. Quote

I have thought the exact same thing, Skip. Make the defense wonder if we are running or passing out of the Wildcat if we put Rodgers in there. That would be a little "test" that would cost you nothing. Perhaps RI is afraid of a QB controversy? Doesn't make sense. Quote

I'm guessing he'd welcome a QB controversy over the situation he has now, which is that he continues to put the same QB on the field every week who is performing poorly. Quote
