I saw this on bigsoccer.com and thought it was funny enough to pass along. Great win tonight. Go Zips!

A win by Indiana over the weekend put paid to Akron's chances of retaining the Big Ten Men's Soccer title, which it captured in style last year, racking up a perfect 5-0-0 in league play. Akron was undone this year not on the field, but instead by the Big Ten's unique unbalanced scheduling rules, which allow teams to selectively avoid playing Akron. As such, Akron did not have sufficient points available to knock off this year's champ, Indiana, which padded its own results with a home win over Northwestern and a home draw with lowly Wisconsin. Tellingly, Akron would have been unable to make up the final gap to Indiana even if it had prevailed in September's controversial away match at Ohio State, which ended in a 2-2 draw in 2OT and is regarded by many as the greatest result in the history of OSU soccer. Compounding the injury of denying Akron its chance to compete for the Big Ten regular-season title, conference officials have declined to invite Akron to participate in the Big Ten Tournament, which begins November 11.

2010 Big Ten standings,* updated through games of Nov. 3:

Team Record (Pts.)

1. Indiana 4-0-1 (13)

2. Akron 3-0-1 (10)

3. Michigan 3-2-0 (9)

Ohio State 3-2-0 (9)

5. Penn State 2-2-1 (7)

Northwestern 2-2-1 (7)

7. Michigan St. 2-4-0 (6)

8. Wisconsin 0-4-1 (1)

*As per league rules, the records of the traditional Big Ten teams do not reflect results of games with Akron.
