ZachTheZip
Tomorrow marks the first sporting event of the 2011-2012 year when the Lady Zips play CSU on Cub Cadet field at 1:00. It's a good opportunity to check out the construction of the expanded grandstand. Stop by after watching the basketball practice.
ZachTheZip
The Lady Zips played well today, especially considering that they've only been practicing together for a week. They pulled off a 4-0 victory over the Vikings. Interestingly, the game was played in three 30-minute sessions. I don't want to read too much into an early season scrimmage, but this team looks pretty legit. They will score a lot of goals this season. The stadium is under construction. Brick walls are going up extending from the sides of the grandstand, behind the lower premium seating. Hard to tell, but I think we'll have restrooms/lockerrooms under the new seats. They've torn up the circle in the center of the walkway that connects the Soccer/Baseball/Softball/Track complex. I think some kind of pavilion will be put there. A concession stand that could serve all sports would make sense.
GoZips
Thanks, Zack, your report on today's scrimmage is indeed accurate. The Ladies seem to have difficulty moving the ball into CSU's end. Once they got to CSU's defensive line the Ladies fired in three wide open shots. CSU never got back to defend. Overall I thought that CSU showed a lot more aggression and ball handling skills. The Lady Zips seemed slow and unsure of themselves. Often a defender would return the ball to midfield and cough it over to a CSU player with a poor pass or get tangled by a pair of CSU players. Looked like the defenders have been taught to bring the ball to mid field and stop. Did not look pretty. Both teams played most if not all their players in a hockey line manner. The three thirty minute periods helped with the heat. Both squads wore dark colored road uniforms. CSU was obviously in better physical condition while the Zips clearly had superior athletes. A fun day walking around checking out the construction progress. A lot of foundational work under way. Could not tell what was actually being built. Expecting more seating and real restrooms. CSU had a much larger contingent of fans than the Lady Zips enjoyed. Player of the game was Akron's number 7. She fired in two rocket goals. Pack_The_MAC
Its great to see the Women's team competing well against good soccer teams. Last year CSU went 9-8-2 and was third in the Horizon. Though the Zips are 'suppose' to beat CSU last year is a prime example of how CSU was able to compete against Akron teams. The fact that the Lady Zips where able to put down that squad in what seems to be blowout fashion is just awesome. By the way, number 7 is Ashley Hughes. The CSU story quoted their coach as saying their ball possession game left a lot wanting. Here's what our side is saying. Sounds like the new ladies are already contributing quite a bit. BTW -- WTF happened to GoZips.com?? I waited ten minutes, and all that downloaded was a list of articles on the left half of the screen, and the right side had nothing but a twitter feed for Zippy! No links to teams or anything else! Is it undergoing another 6-month "rebuilding" season? Apologies to you-know who!
