8. Rob Ianello, Akron

2011 record 1-3

Overall (since 2010) 2-14

Ianello’s one of three second-year coaches on this list, joining Porter and Enos. And like that pair, Ianello has been a sizable disappointment. He and (Larry) Porter are similar, in a way, in that each was hired largely because of their ability on the recruiting trail. When are lower-tier programs going to learn that all the recruiting ability in the world doesn’t help when your hire is not ready to be, you know, a head coach? I imagine that Locksley, Porter and Ianello, among a few others, will begin to show the also-rans that it’s far better to go with a veteran coach with a proven track record than a youngster with sterling recruiting credentials.

Also check out the one about Dan Enos.

4. Dan Enos, Central Michigan

2011 record 1-3

Overall (since 2010) 4-12

Enos didn’t inherit the same situation as Butch Jones, his predecessor, did upon replacing Brian Kelly. The cupboard wasn’t as full; it was far from bare, however, and Enos deserves to be on the hot seat merely for his decision to take Central Michigan away from the offensive philosophy that led to four years of MAC dominance and towards a more pro-style attack. In doing so, Enos took his hand, swept the remnants of the cupboard into a bag and left it with the trash. It was one of the worst big-picture coaching decisions of the last 24 months. A scary thought? Based on September, the Chippewas are worse than they were in 2010.

Eerily familiar, no?

And on twitter, talking about his article:

@PreSnapRead: At some point, lower-tier programs need to learn that hiring a proven, veteran coach is far brighter than hiring a young recruiting maven

@PreSnapRead: Pretty logical. Yet young, inexp. HCs crash and burn every year. RT @ChadReuter Let the coaches coach, and let the recruiters recruit.
