Ryno aka Menace
I live down here in Columbus, OH and hockey is pretty popular, they just built a general public rink by Polaris and it is busy all the time I wonder if UA should get one, the Buckeyes have one.But I feel Northeast Ohio has a decent pool of wrestlers so I think it would be better to go that route, since the first mention would mean the addition of a rink! ziptrumpet87
but the rink could be a multipurpose arena also used for basketball...GO ZIPS!!!
flipthezip
Not sure how close we are with compliance to Title IX. Would have to believe any additions would need to come on the womens side. Or a 2 women's for 1 men's addition if we went with a hockey or wrestling. Most logical for women's sports would be Golf and Field Hockey.
UAZipster0305
Hockey is a bad idea...too much financial investment required and little community interest...Cleveland barely supports a minor league team!Men's Tennis or Woman's Golf...perhaps Men's Swimming and Diving...although one would have to find a way to ensure that men's and woman's scholarships were equal. We already have programs for the opposing gender and to add them, additional facilities wouldn't be needed. However, replacing the slum area south of campus with a golf course would be a dream come true. What student wouldn't want a dorm, residence hall, or apartment on a golf course! Let's expand the campus map to include the area enclosed by Route 8, I76/77, and Wolf's Ledges. The cross country teams would also benefit by an on campus golf course because running trails could be integrated (that's what the University of Michigan does).I think faculty and students would also appreciate an indoor tennis facility behind the rec center. AKronKeLL3433
According to a kid that was in one of my classes a hockey team is in the works. I don't know if it'll all happen but I am interested to see what happens.
RobC2
It excites me, but likewise surprises me that a hockey team could possibly be in the works. Our #1 financial priority is currently the football stadium. A new basketball/hockey area would be a dream come true, but is it at all financially plausible at this point in time?I enjoy hockey and would love to see a Zips hockey team! I know I'd support them, but I'm at as many football & b-ball games as I can possibly make as well. Unfortunately the Akron community is currently another story. RedSteve
Akron will NEVER get a hockey team? Where do you zips intend on putting this team on your tiny campus?Akron has the smallest budget in the MAC and can barely afford football let alone hockey.I can assure you that you need not another sport for Miami to sweep you up in. I read in Sports Illustrated that the Hawkskins have reached the pinnacle of collegiate hockey. That duplicates what the Zips were able to do earlier this year in the world's most popular sport. Ohhhh -- you probably forgot that real men play SOCCER -- that's one of those sports Miami had to cut out because of BUDGET difficulties! I realize that budgets are getting squeazed in the Old School parts of the MAC, like Toledo and Oxford. Meanwhile, in Akron we have spent over $200M for a little campus "sprucing up", and in what should be just a few more months, we'll be discussing the start of construction for our new on-campus football stadium -- allowing us to blow away the rest of the MAC in facilities. Steve, things are looking so bright in Akron, I hear they're wearing in the JAR.BTW Roos -- think VOLLEYBALL -- as in MEN's VOLLEYBALL. If we start a team next fall we could still enjoy the play of Capt Kangaroo's favorite ex-Zip [AGAIN!]. Of course I'm referring to the former Hoban HS all-stater, who once played for his very popular father on the hardwood. And maybe we could scare up his girlfriend again. What ever happened to her, anyway? Is she hogging the Stetson Hatters' board? Question:When Miami had a golf team, were they called the ForeSkins? TheSportsGuyDM
If we were going to add sports, like others have said, there needs to be compliance with Title IX. The best men's sport to add would be swimming and diving or wrestling, since there use to be a team at Akron in both sport. With that, we could add women's golf and field hockey. Both are solid sports with a majority of the schools competing in them on the conference level. Men's tennis would be a bad decision in the fact that we do not have a facility for them to compete at that is near or on campus, thus giving us the same problem we already have on the women's side...a lack of recruiting power through a top-flight facility. Now, if we were to get a new tennis center approved and built, then men's tennis would be good. However, men's tennis is not as big in the conference as women's tennis. I think hockey is out of the question.
MRasor0200
Everything I've heard indicates the university is closer to removing a men's sport than adding one.But it's nice to think about adding a wrestling team.

zipboy
I can't see adding another mens sport especially with Title 9. We also need to do well with the sports we have and not get spread too thin. Mike knows what is going on. So if something is cut, my guess would be Mens CC. There are not many mens sports left and right now CC is the lowest performer of the mens sports.
