4 MAC Teams In NCAA Tourney!

I don't know if this has ever happened in any sport before. The MAC received four (4) bids to the NCAA women's volleyball tournament -- Ball State, Western Michigan, Central Michigan and Northern Illinois! (WOW!) However CMU was forced to play on the road @Illinois in the first round, and the other three lost on neutral courts. So now the MAC is out of the event. That was quick! :(

Will Akron ever come close to qualifying? Will anyone notice? Too bad none were able to make it to the sub-region here in Honolulu. We had over 8000 for the two matches, er, uh, games as they now call 'em. A lot has changed since I coached HS (boys) volleyball in the mid-90s. Bring back the side-out!!!

This year was a step backwards as far as Akron qualifying goes. I hope it does happen. I made it to a few games this year. I`ve also been to a few UH games (men`s and wahine) in the past. Akron doesn`t get the crowds Hawaii gets but the enthusiasm on the floor is there. More people ought to check it out next year. Plus the price cannot be beat.

There does seem to be a small contingent of loyal followers. Also there are usually some UA athletes from other sports. It seems like (to a casual observer, anyway) the school works at encouraging the teams to support each other.

I watched a few of the Zips matches on mac-sports .com...the ladies were not very good this year, Plus the MAC was one of the tougher DI conferences in vb this season and it will be even tougher next year as a lot of good freshman have entered the mac conference.

I was surprised that NIU lost (they were killed in the third set and lost a heart breaker in the fourth set). Western Michigan gave Washington a hard time and Ball State hung in there for a while but Louisville was the better team.

BTW there were two big upsets in the tourney. OSuckeyes upset Tennessee at knoxville in 5 sets and Kansas State upset #2Nebraska at Lincoln in 5 sets.

IMHO Rally scoring is much more exciting than side-out... Its bringing/brought a lot more fans and players to this awesome sport.

I used to love college volleyball before they went to rally scoring. Now the matches seem quicker and less interesting to me. That being said I will always be a Zips fan, just think the changes in rules over the years have made it harder for me to maintain a high level of interest. Anybody else miss the days of 'side out' volleyball?
