After returning to the Center Ice Complex this past week the Zips fell to Dayton and Adrian but had to turn things around fast with the The Zips took an early lead on a goal from Greg Revak with 9:40 to play in the first period. Akron’s defense, and particularly coach Mike Sadjadi’s penalty kill unit. Akron played much of the game with four skaters, after committing what Sadjadi said were “a lot of stupid penalties.” Freshman goalie Justin Cahhill did a tremendous job for the Zips between the pipes. Between Cahhill the Zips were able to make that early 1-0 lead stand until the 13:56 mark in the 2nd period, when the Colonials were able to slip a goal in off the right post behind Cahhill. With :28 seconds remaining and the Zips on the defensive end of a power play, the senior defensemen, Scott was able to break away and to flick in a back hander, past the stick side of the Colonials goalie, giving the Zips a thrilling 2-1 win. Coach Sadjadi said he was preparing for overtime but was thrilled with his team’s effort in the final period. Coach Koch said the team had a lot of happy guys in the locker room after the game and deserved to be happy about beating a 12-4 Robert Morris team. With the win the Zips improved to 7-15 on the year. Saturday the Zips played host to the University of Pittsburgh Panthers. The Panthers came in at 12-4, and having beaten the same Robert Morris team that Akron had sent packing in the games final minutes the night before. A strong effort saw the Zips pull back from being down 2-0, scoring four goals in the third period, and forcing overtime, before falling 1-0 in a shootout with the Panthers. Things didn’t start off well for Coach Sadjadi and the Zips. Akron was saddled with four penalties, unofficially, in the first period. Once again though Akron’s penalty kill line was effective in shutting down the Panthers shorthanded. However, two minutes into the second period Geoffrey Landry beat Akron goalie Justin Cahhill off a rebound to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Panthers junior forward Daniel Finger stretched that lead to 2-0 midway through the second period, when Pittsburgh had the 5-4 advantage, thanks to a hooking penalty against the Zips. Akron was not without chances, having four power play opportunities through two periods of play. The Zips were 0-4 on those chances, but were able to successfully stymie the Panthers at the end of the second period after defensemen Brian Burke was called for hooking with 2:31 remaining in the period. Going into the third period the Zips trailed the 11-4 Panthers 2-0 and suddenly the Zips hit their stride. Sophomore forward Reid Wiley pulled the Zips within one with 13:59 remaining in the third on a power play goal. However two minutes later Finger got a rebound off of a Cahhill save and put the Panthers up 3-1 with 11:37 to play. From there the Zips responded with two goals in a matter of three minutes thanks to sophomore Charles DeBow and freshman center Stephen Richnavaski. After the tying the game, Akron got caught with too many men on the ice. Pittsburgh capitalized on a goal by Dan Stein with over five minutes to play. I n a repeat of Friday night the Zips were able to get a late goal, this time off of a power play thanks to senior forward Matt Morbeto sending Akron into overtime with the score knotted at 4-4. Neither team could make anything happen in the overtime period, putting the game’s outcome on a shootout. Freshman forward Zach Penta beat Cahhill glove side on the low post, scoring the only goal during the shootout. Revak missed stick side for Akron and DeBow’s final shot sailed high ending the game. Despite the loss, Coach Matt Koch said he was impressed with the fight in the Zips, coming back from a 2-0 deficit and coming from behind three times during the game, from 2-0, 3-2, and 4-3. The Zips host a big time game against the Cincinnati Bearcats next Friday at 9:05 from Center Ice Sports Complex. The University of Akron Athletic Director, Tom Wistrcill is expected to be in attendance.
