MaxZIP Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 Former North Canton Hoover point guard transferring to Akron Canton Repository link I don't agree with the hoover coach. Akron definitely has talent at the point. Welcome to the team but expect competition for minutes. Quote

Quickzips Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 The more I think about it the more I like this move. KD is hedging his bets a little bit for 2014. He knows Alex will have used up his eligibility by then, and we haven't seen enough from Melo yet to annoint him the clear cut heir apparent. Why not bring in an experienced kid to push Melo for the backup minutes behind Alex next year and let the two of them fight it out to see who starts in 2014. And I don't necessarily disagree with the Hoover coach that we are a bit thin at PG. PG is too important a position for your team to not have quality depth. It is the one position on the floor handling the ball more than anyone else. Think about earlier in the season when Alex was injured and our only options were Melo and playing guys like Deji, Walsh or McAdams out of position. This team didn't look very good at that point. I think you really need to have 3 PGs on your roster. Quote

I think you really need to have 3 PGs on your roster. This is the reasoning behind bringing Evans. The additional plus is that he slots year wise between the senior (Abreu) and the sophomore (Betancourt). Thus far, Carmelo has been a bit of a disappointment. He has not yet learned to think and operate at college speed. He WILL get there in time. Quote

I think you really need to have 3 PGs on your roster. I couldn't agree more. PG in basket ball, QB in football, and GK in soccer and hockey are unique positions where 3-deep is needed. You can have 4 bigs for the PF/C positions or 2 wings for the SF/SG positions and you can say that you have depth there. If one of your bigs is hurt, you can go into the game and split the PF/C 80 minutes among your other 3 bigs and you're fine. For the PG, if one of your guys is hurt (Alex earlier this year), you still need a starter and a backup for the game. Hence the need for 3. Now the problem when you have 3 good PG and all 3 are healthy, you want to maintain some sort of rythym while keeping them all happy. Quote
Quickzips Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 3 PGs 5 Wings 5 Bigs is ideal to me. Gives you enough depth at all three spots, even if you redshirt one of each, to put together a nice rotation. Most seasons you won't see most teams able to put that together for various reasons, but I think it is an ideal situation. BTW, next years Zips (this presumes that Justice is the odd man out and Evans takes his scholarship, also presumes that Quincy Diggs does not return to the team): 3 PGs (Abreu, Evans, Betancourt) 5 Wings (Ibitayo, McAdams, Kretzer, Gladden, Jackson) 5 Bigs (Treadwell, Harney, Forsythe, Cheatham, Johnson) Quote
johnnyzip84 Posted January 1, 2013 Report Posted January 1, 2013 I'm really glad to see Evans coming in to play next year. I think it's obvious to anyone paying attention that the Zips are extremely vulnerable to AA missing any great deal of time this season. Hopefully, he'll avoid any major injury this year and Evans can allow him to play fewer minutes next year. I'm still concerned with AA playing too many minutes the rest of 2012-2013. I might even consider redshirting Melo NEXT year to allow him to develop physically. Quote
Dave in Green Posted March 9, 2013 Report Posted March 9, 2013 Nyles Evans scored 27 points (including 4-6 3-pointers) on an injured ankle last night in an upset of favored Chipola College, carrying his Brevard Community College Team to the Division 8 championship game tonight against College of Central Florida, which is ranked #8 in the nation. The winner of tonight's game will earn a berth in the March 18-23 NJCAA Division I national championship tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. “Players play and tough guys win,” BCC head coach Jeremy Shulman said with what was remaining of his voice. And the effort of Evans who played on pure guts due to a tender ankle injured in the first half personified that. Despite being challenged on every dribble, every cut and every shot by the aggressive Chipola defenders and in turn run ragged when Chipola had the ball, Evans finished with a game-high 27 points. “I feel like this game was a season win, something we did all season just happened in one game,” Evans said quietly in the subdued BCC dressing room. Dave in Green Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Forgot to post that Nyles' season ended when this team lost by 5 points to the College of Central Florida, the #8 JuCo team in the country. Nyles was hampered the whole game by his injured ankle, and was only able to score 10 points. Next time he plays in college competition will be in a Zips uniform. Quote

GoZips Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 Former North Canton Hoover point guard transferring to Akron Canton Repository link Today was my first look at Nyles Evans. He is a dandy. Watched a 40 minute session of open gym, Zips against Zips. Nyles handles the ball well with either hand. He "sees" the floor. He drives to the basket through traffic, and scores. Evans has an excellent outside shot that for today, at least, was dropping. He fits right in. Seamless. Excellent get. Takes pressure off 'Melo. Quote
GoZips Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 Nyles likes his tats. He is sporting a recent tat on his left arm. I'm NOT a tat person. However, looks good on Evans. Quote
Dave in Green Posted July 3, 2013 Report Posted July 3, 2013 No surprise that Nyles fits right in with the Zips. He played alongside many of them (including Q) in last season's Cleveland + Akron Am Pro Basketball Summer League at Walsh University. They've been teammates for more than a year now and are far from total strangers. Quote
