bobbyake
Coming off a great season last year as MAC champions, Akron's momentum will go unseen. With the first home game so far deep in September, the rest of the home games are going to miss out on decent weather. It's hard to imagine we'll get people to go to games when last year, barely anyone went to watch Akron play Can't. Not saying many people should have went, but it was a rivalry game that Akron was playing to become the MAC East Champion. I know the weather was extremly horrible but still, if that was an OSU game at the rubber bowl, it would have been sold out by the people in this area alone. 2 of those home games are on Thursday, Thursday!!! I know this is great for national recognition but it's going to be horrible for attendance. Even if Akron has a good record going into those games, I can't imagine both of them averaging more than 9,000 people. It's Thursday with a good chance of having horrible weather. I have classes on thursday until 9 so I won't be there. I'm probably not the only student that's going to miss out.I think Akron is going to struggle with attendance this year. No way will we average 15,000.
AZipsCrazy
I'm sorry I tend to dis agree... maybe cause I don't have classes on Friday's but that's besides the point. If Akron pulls off the upset against N.C. State in Raliegh I think that people are going to fill those seats rain or shine (cold or warm). Besides last year was a situation where the team was (record-wise) going for a three or four way tie for first in the MAC East and it just happened to be that we got the good fortune of being the team to make it to the championship (Granted we won the championship). That reason and the weather combined for the poor attendance. That's why it would be amazing if the new stadium was domed (I know it would never happen... but you could imagine how sweet that would be). This schedule is kind of funky with how late our first home game is yet I kind of like it. If we can pull off an upset in those first few games and steam roll through the MAC (which I think we will) this schedule will only make our record more of an accomplishment. As well this tough schedule is preparing the Zips for the tough schedule that they'll be facing next year, with the season kicking off at Ohio State!!! I think the Zips need this season to be extremely tough so the following year will be a "been there done that" situation.
grice
It's a shame Akron doesn't open the 2006 season at home that would have made for a real attendance bonanza coming off the excitement of the Motor City Bowl and 1st MAC title. Now the Zips will probably need to win at least two of their first three games to maintain the area's enthusiasm for the home opener in late September. bobbyake
15,000 is going to be hard to get unless GP1 buys 3,000 tickets for every game. I like who we play and think those games are great. We will probably have a great record. But those weekday games suck. And the weather is going to suck. Bad attedance in the making. msopher
One of the keys is students. Those Thursday games should be filled with 5-8,000 students. Granted the games are off campus but the university needs to provide transport or do something to get people in the stands. Nothing looks more embarassing to a university than a game on national tv in front of an empty crowd.
liljc
i dunno about the numbers, but with the end zone closed off the stands will appear to be more full for a tv audience

mrelegazna
This horse is dead. Can we please stop beating it??? I was also thinking how familiar this all sounded (somebody in the original scheduling thread, I mercifully forget who, went off the deep end and said the AD should go to jail for allowing this schedule to go down, and he was serious.)The lateness of our first home game is definitely a bummer, hopefully the whether stays decent into November. Also, just going with my gut here, I don't have any research to back it up...but I suspect that the Wednesday/Thursday games on national television are more of a financial and recruiting boon to the program than having a full stadium (not saying a full stadium isn't hugely important, don't get me wrong)....I suspect it's still better even if the cameras catch those embarrassing shots of empty sections. You've got to get on television. Akron football is a fine product and it needs advertised.
