Post game thoughts

Overall, I was pleased with the effort and performance. We were sloppy at times. PSU is about 2 TDs better and that is how the game ended up. If we had played a flawless game, we would have won. In the past if we had played flawless, we still would have lost by 5 TDs. Other thoughts1. Glad to hear JD so disappointed in the post game. He was going for the win. I thought we had a shot to win until they put their last TD on the board.2. Good performances by the new guys, Jones, Kennedy, and Harvey3. Special teams was good and bad. Kick returns were pretty good. We consistently got it to the 25-30. Coverage was good with a few breakdowns. Stec and MD had good moments and bad moments.4. Running game opened up a little bit in the 2nd half. LIne will be fine.5. Getsy looked pretty poised. I feel good with him leading us.6. In the past at PSU if we forced a punt or 2 it was a good day for the D. Defense played very good. Next will tell how good the D really is. But based off yesterday, we will have the #1 or 2 D in the MAC.7. For the first time ever, we looked as fast as PSU. The cool weather helped not wearing down on depth. They were a little bigger but we looked like we belonged on the field with them. Akron would go 500 in the big 10 this year. 8. Clean up the mistakes. Most frustrating part of the day was the penalties.9. Good week 1 effort, opportunity is there next week. We need a win not just a close game. With the best chance ever to beat a major OOC opponent, will the beacon sack up and send a reporter to the game?

1) OUR RUN DEFENSE PWNT!!!We were stuffing their running game all freakin' day long!Just from memory, I think there were close to 10 plays that Penn had for negative yardage. If we had one glaring strength in that game, our Run-D was it.2) See number 13) We held it together. I don't mean to sound like Pluto, but in the back of my mind, I was sorta waiting for that breakdown momment when we gave up, and we never did. Even the new punter, who got rushed hard every single put, and buried on his back several times, kept his poise when the wet football misbehaved. No one panicked. No one quit.4) Our most consitently perceivable mismatch actually seemed to be our 0-line who were consistently late getting bodies in front of pass rushers and couldn't make holes for the runner they way they should have.5) Our most glaring weakness was our coverage schemes. I never saw anybody get blown away with too much speed or talent... but what I did see a lot of were guys who appeared out of place when the ball was in the air (due to how our coverage schemes were getting picked apart) and linebackers trying to rotate onto receivers. This got exploited more than anything else in the game in my opinion.6) Making them respect the run? I was begging and pleading at JD through my television all first half to stop trying to open up the passing game by making them think we can run. We SHOULD HAVE made them understand, right from the first two series, that we can drive the ball with a passing game. That would have opened up the run. Trying to make them respect your weakness FIRST is only good when you are playing a team who, in their own psyche, thinks they are on your level. Penn State thought they were above us, even though they were saying all of the diplomatic things in the media. When it comes to a team like them, you NEED to make them respect your strength first, then you can exploit the defenses respect for your strength by going to other tools and spreading the field.7) Most of the stats indicated we should have been in this game all the way.Time of Possession: Akr 37:29 | PSU 22:31First downs: Akr 18 | PSU 13Passing: Akr 192 | PSU 2068) What hurt us? Penalties and turnovers. Actually, the turnover ratio wasn't that bad. 3/2 Penalties killed drives in the first quarter. Think about how close the game is statistically, and take those two big penaties. Game is even.

I went up for the game yesterday and will say one thing... this team will not quit, and JD won't let them. If you watched to the end, JD called all three of this timeouts with less than two minutes to go. The PSU morons were going ballistic. I thought it was great. They played the whole game and were trying to do something positive until the very end. Even whey the guys came off the field they didn't hang their heads. This team has some pride, dammit! And that's the biggest difference I have seen over the Owens and even the Faust-led teams. (Well, that and the fact JD does a good job coaching.)I think dry weather at NC State will be the difference. There were a lot of balls that shot through recievers' wet hands on Saturday. Luke's passes were on the money; this guy will be playing on Sundays. NC State is very beatable.Go Zips! :thumb:

zen i have to agree. why did we run so much on first down? we werent getting anything. i know you have to keep them honest, but there was no way we were going to establish a running game. we went to jabari on the outs( made yards), and then went away from that? other than that i thought our team especially the d-line played hard all game.

BuckZip,I was sitting in the North Endzone, so I had a pretty good view from behind Getsy for half the game. I think the Zips were trying to test the secondary, but PSU's zone closed down many of the passing lanes. Its so tough to beat a team when they are getting pressure with their front 4 and are dropping 7 guys into a zone. BTW, I was impressed with Akron's speed on defense, your TE, Harvey, and Getsy. I liked that the Akron players shook off the 2004 game and didn't give up. Personally, I think the Zips have a great shot at winning the MAC this season. I think yyour defense is going to blow up some MAC teams, and that the offense will pick it up once some of the receivewrs get more experience. NIP

Buck,I don't expect PSU to beat tOSU, but I don't know if they'll get "crushed". I think PSU's defense and skill players are good enough to keep them in every game. Plus, Tressell rarely crushes ANYONE. tOSU gets up by double digits and Tressel shuts it down. As for Akron, I was really impressed with #21 on defense. Getsy's arm is solid. As evidenced by his TD pass. That was a PERFECT strike. I'd LOVE to see you guys upset Chuck "The Chest" Amato. That would be the nail in his coffin.
