You are 100% right but the real shock this year for the team is when they look at Brookhart and staff before a game and see a college coaching staff instead of a group of high school / division II flunkees. That alone may put them in a state so dense they will be unable to play against Penn State.

Gone is the Division II Crew - Hello how are ya Division I fun bunch. :thumb:

Our former football coach not only hung himself, but he made the noose and threw it over the tree. The only people who don't appreciate what MT has brought to Akron are the die hard friends of the two head coaches he's had to fire. Which leads me to think you're LO's wife or son hanging around here again, or maybe LO himself.

Let it go man! Move on.

wrong again sir.....I've tried to get the old staff to look at this site Their response was "they did'nt want to get in a pissing match with a bunch of skunks". Good response.......I'M just an old zips fan that knows the real story.....one that would apal the typical zips fan

There's lots of stuff that would appall us if we knew what really went on. I don't care what really went on. I felt it was time for a change and it happened, so I'm happy. Think that most of the people on this board feel the same way. Don't get me wrong, LO moved us up from Faust, and I'm greatful for that, but he was dead in the water.

I like the new coaching staff and think they will be good for the team, but the way MT did LO was dirty, and if people could know the details of it they would be calling for MT's resignation. Unfortunately, I don't really feel it's my place to give out the details on that.

It seems to me that there is always someone you knows "the real story behind the story" but through descretion won't say anything. I have learned through experience that that person REALLY doesn't know the "real story" but wants others to think so. I think we are VERY fortunate to have M.T. I don't remember a big cry from L.O. loyalists when he was placed on special assignment as there was when J.D. was replaced by J.F. Each coach has contributed something to the program--J.D and his PMA, J.F. from I-AA to I-A with 65 scholarships, L.O. with improved GPA, solid players. Where would we be today without M.T.--L.O., D.H., D.P..R.A. would still be directing teams with lack of real success. Give credit to M.T. for the field house, the new practice fields, the Jackson field complex update for softball and soccer. M.T. conducts himself with true pofessionalism, and we'll be extremely fortunate to keep in Akron a few more years.

I guess you could say that my family is pretty close to Akron football being a parent of a former Zip player. The news of Lee Owens being replaced was met with cheers from me, my wife, and most importantly our son. I do not know anything about any "real story" about lockerrrooms or how he was firec. I can tell you that the 2002 season was tough on my son and his fellow seniors. Lee had a difficult time telling the same story from one day to the next and lost his team's respect following a preseason incident with one of the players. That is one story that I hope never comes out for the sake of the school.

Personally I grew tired of hearing one thing in public from Lee and seeing first hand another way of doing things from his actions. Through my son I have heard about 10 different stories about what happened at the end of last season.

I wish the change had been made a few years earlier so my son could look back on his playing days with a smile rather than discontent for the lack of leadership and character. My kid played a great deal so his unhappiness was not linked to playing time. He just lost respect for the head coach and that made him question his love for the game. Believe me his story was not unique. I do not know any of the new coaches but I can say that for the most part the assistants on the old staff were good guys and I was proud to have my son play for them. I cannot say that for Lee Owens.

I am just a parent of a player so my opinion probably holds little water but I wanted to give my 2 cents.

Unfortunately I know too much of the real story. You have a July assignment...................Find the answer to these two questions...1. When did L.O. find out he was fired??? 2. What was the means of communication used to fire him........The answers are unbelievable !!!!!!! TRUE UNPROFESSIONALISM !!!!! IN M.t. we trust......good luck .I WOULD FOLLOW Can't FIRST !!!!!!!

Hey, I thought I could sign in one last time under this name instead of by my new name, Old Zip. Most of you thought I was Owen's old lady but in the end I was exposed as the old ball coach himself. Since I am just a D-II coach, which is a part-time gig, I have to get a job slingin' fries and burgers here at Swensons. When I get a break I try and log in and get something started. Drop by some time and I will slide you a shake on the QT and we can talk about the glory days of Purle Eagle football that are just around the corner. We had a great recruiting class this year with some of NE Ohio's finest high school kids. Most if not all were on our recruiting list at Akron so it did not take much to con, I mean recruit them here. I think we should go 9-1 this season but the one loss will be to Wayne State. Their new oach kept me afloat for years in spite of my ignorance. If I had only let him have control off the offense against Can't State and UConn I would probably still be at Akron U. :puke:

Definately very right on all acounts...you may want to check their sources. And if it was anyone involved with the old staff I wouldn't exactly consider them to be the whole truth and nothing but the truth.....If you are trying to insinuate that he learned in the paper the next morning...you really should consider bying this bridge I have in Brooklyn.

Man, it's getting pretty close. I can't take the anticipation! Each of the 2 or 3 people that "Know the real story" are now down to letting the rest of us guess! I give it one more day and we'll know all 3 versions of "The Real Story". Glad to know that we have people here who know the real story but shield the rest of us from the Gory, Nasty details.....at least for a day or two.:lol:

Guys, I'm on the team, and MT has NEVER been in the locker room after a game. NEVER. And to address an earlier question, Coach O was fired when he went back to the office after the Ohio victory and found a note on his desk. Talk about no balls at all. I knew something was up when Mike Thomas wasn't on the field after the game posing for the fans like he usually does.

Oh, and one more tidbit of information. Remember that great win over Marshall in '02? Remember how it was on TV? Well Mike Thomas fought very hard to get that game on television, not because he wanted exposure for the school, but because he wanted the Zips to be humiliated on regional television so he could come out and fire LO the next day. Guess that little plan backfired pretty bad  . MT was looking to get rid of Coach O since the day he got on campus. I have absolutely no respect for that slimeball and never will, though I'm not going to hold that against our new staff.

Old Zip if he found out of the firing in the newspaper, by phone call, by e-mail or in person -- I don't care -- he was here far to long for my liking and I'm glad he's not here anymore.

If you are thinking he deserves to still be coach -- get a clue! I'm not going to go over the reasons again, but it was the worst winning record in the history of Div. 1 football.

If you want to root for Can't I think I can speak for most everyone on the board when I say -- have fun and don't let the door hit you in the ass. We don't need Akron fans that are so blindly loyal to a pathetic coach they can't see the need for change. Akron athletics needs to have more fans who don't accept mediocrity from their athletic programs if Akron athletics is ever going to turn the corner.

Jim Dennison... won games, had character and the respect of his players, got a raw deal, made the best of a bad situation, moved on to another school, built another winning program, is once again a part of the Akron program, high class guy.

Lee Owens... lost games, used the good book for a paperweight on his desk, got canned, whines constantly about his "raw deal", can't move on from his past, low class.

I guess the real question is not when and where he was told he was fired but when SHOULD he have been fired. I say the second he came into the locker room after the Can't fiasco he should have got his walking papers.

In the end it doesn't really matter. Lee is gone. Those that liked him will continue to be bitter  , those who didn't like him will continue to rejoice , and those who just care about the program and school have already moved on.

My final point is this.....if akron continues to hire people like m.t. to run the show they are not going to win anyway......you can not treat people the way he does and have the respect of the players ,coaches,etc........it may work like that at O.S.U., Mich.,etc.......but not in the M.A.C........the situation is just different...........and Akron is really difficult for obvious reasons.......let's face it...... it's probably the third toughest football job in the M.A.C.
