zff Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 This is from a PA newspaper. Penn State opens its foot ball season Sept. 4 against Akron, and less one thinks this will be a can of corn for the Nittany Lions, be advised to think again. For one, there are no "gimmes" for teams coming off a 3-9 season like Penn State. But even more importantly, Akron will arrive at State College with one of college football's top quarterbacks in senior Charlie Frye, a 6-4, 228-pound gunslinger that the MAC school is already pushing for the Heisman Trophy. Frye already has 8,426 career passing yards and is considered one of the Top 15 senior NFL prospects. The school has already mailed a slick 81/2 x 11 Heisman promotional sheet on Frye, whose 63.6 percent completion rate ranks No. 5 in MAC history. Said Gil Brandt, an NFL draft expert, on the promo sent by the school: "He [Frye] can be the third MAC quarterback over the last three years to be chosen in the first round of the NFL draft." So while the opener may be little-known Akron in five weeks, it might not be so easy for Penn State.... Quote
TOTALZIP Posted July 28, 2004 Report Posted July 28, 2004 By season's end everyone in the nation will know about Frye. Quote
Guest ilvpsu Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 WE are looking forward to a good contest at Beaver Stadium. PSU has a good pass D, at least we did last year 3rd in the nation. So bring a running back to State College as well. I hope it is a good game and no one gets injured, Come and enjoy the atmosphere . We Are..................................... Penn State. Quote
Guest Guest_RACER Posted July 31, 2004 Report Posted July 31, 2004 thans for the nice comments. i dont think the psu fans know how good #5 is. we do need to run the ball some.the game will be won psu offense vs our defense. our d has to get better to make it a game. i would not be surprised if our offense puts up 30+ on you guys. our d though could give up alot more than that if they do not improve from last year. Zipsrifle Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 They might know about Frye, but still think they'll easily kill us. They basically say that they are going to stomp the Zips into the ground. Even the posters that say we shouldn't be taken lightly predict we "stand about the chance of a no-legged possum on a freeway when the enter Beaver Stadium this year" and "they're a typical PSU squad that crushes a 3rd tier team like the Zips." They still have the MAC sucks mentality and think that they would have easily taken Miami last year. They remind us that "These MAC guys play in 15,000 seat stadiums". Apparently we will piss our pants when we enter Beaver stadium. They also think that Frye won't know what to do when "Charlie Frye's jersey is going to be covered in green turf and blue from Hali's and Wake's jereseys by the end of the day." Yup, lets just let them think that way. We won't tell them about going for the lead late in the 4th against Wisconsin last year (I think Camp Randall has 16,000+ seats) or the fact that Frye has seen his fair share of turf and still lit up opposing teams, even when injured. I hope they've got a computer in the new Field House locker room with a huge screen so they can show posts like this to the team every day. The good news is that we should be able to pull off a technical feat like this since we are on par with "Furman, Akron, South Hills Business School, Computer Learning Network, what is the difference?". Yup, it's a over a month till the first game and the PSU fans are already looking past us. We're a No Legged Possum on the freeway Quote
zipboy Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 I am all for getting fired up too, but until the Zips actually beat someone like Penn State, why should Penn State worry about us? If it was Toledo, Marshall, BG, Miami, there would be a different level of respect. Those guys have all proven it before. We have not. The only way to get this respect is to beat a few Penn States or Virginias a couple of times. I like our team, I like our players, I like our coaches. We still have some unproven guys that will need to step up and a few guys will need to surprise. JD is unproven too as he has yet to coach a game. I got my tickets for PSU on Friday. I believe the Zips can pull it out, and want to be there to see it happen. Quote
Zipsrifle Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that the Zips will go into Beaver stadium and roll over PSU. I agree that this is JD's first game and there are likely to be pleanty of mistakes. What amazes me is that PSU, despite coming off of a 3-9 season, still thinks that they will destroy any MAC team. In the past few years, Akron has held it's own in BCS Stadiums and if JD is going to make the improvment we all hope for, I think we'll see glimpses of it from day one. Quote
Guest Guest_racer Posted August 1, 2004 Report Posted August 1, 2004 i agree zipsrifle. after reading some of the comments on the psu board you think they were 12-0 last year. i think some (not all) of the psu fans are living in the past. they were 3-9 ,and the one fan said they would have beat miami of ohio.right !!! PSULion Posted August 3, 2004 Report Posted August 3, 2004 Don't know what comments your reading or what board but 99% of the PSU fanbase is holding off on predictions. IF someone goes on the board talking smack they will get it back in spades however. How many return starters do you have coming back on the OL? WR? DB? RB? Will your DL be improved? As a side note PSU sucked onions last season, but they had one of the better defensive backfields in Div 1, return the cb that had the most defended balls, interceptions and returns. Who replaces the other corner is unknown by the fans right now, there are 3 with experience so it's a race as to who can step it up. We have a redshirt freshmen that I'm waiting to see, if everything I've heard about him for the last year is true he will be our return man, along with possibly another redshirt freshman. He runs in the 4.3 range. Linebacking crew is all rookies, with the only experienced one being a true sophmore who played in 9 games last season. Other then the player I spoke about on returns the one linebacker had the fastest 40 in spring practice. Linebackers have the speed, just not the experience. Hope they jell quickly. Quote
