zen Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 zip81, regardless if you are correct or not, basically what you are doing is attacking the soccer stadium because you perceive it as a threat to the zips football stadium. To me, this is akin to lobbying the city to block a neighborhood resident on your street from trying to get his sidewalk fixed because your afraid it will hurt your chances to attempt the same thing. Argh, crappy metaphor. I am trying to find a way to verbalize how sickening it looks when people would go so negative on something else because they view it as a threat to something virtually distinct Quote

A soccer team will not be successful...period.NEVER have I said that I'm against the soccer stadium because it will hurt the Zips stadium. I have tried to be clear on this.Personally, I feel that the Zips will get their stadium even if they build the soccer stadium. I just feel the soccer stadium is a waste. Just build the shopping center. (without taxpayer money)I also want to say that this heated debate is just that...debate.I hurl no insults nor do I think any less of a person who disagrees. We're all Zips...right?Let me leave by saying one more thing Quote
zen Posted December 15, 2006 Report Posted December 15, 2006 :DIf the soccer thing flops, the only thing it hurts is taxpayers. We get taxed for everything, now all of a sudden we are frugal? fI'm not sure that I have even heard how much the taxes will be for the average person.I noticed that when they needed to pass a tax for the AKRON zoo as a county issue, the zoo suddenly got named summit county zoo on the ballots. Just for the record...I am always "frugal" when it comes to taxpayer money.Hey, I don't even smoke and smokers are the ones who will be paying the bill.Really Zen, I just see another big building in northern Summit county that we'll be trying to find a need for when the soccer team(s) fold. Ryno aka Menace Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Look I am from Massillon Oh, born and raised went to the University of Akron. My point when comparing Columbus to Macedonia is the fact that Soccer is waaaay more popular down here compared to up there! And no one attends the professional games here so my question is what makes people think the will have a larger attendance in a location where there is less people I understand Macedonia is not on an island, but you can't compare MLS to the NFL or NBA it just isn't as popular here as it is in other countries. I agree this is a waste of taxpayers money. Quote

I don't think you can say it has less people. You almost have 2 million people in Cuyahoga and Summit Counties alone. I couldn't agree more with you concerning the soccer stadium. Quote
zen Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 I wouldn't bet the farm on it, but I honestly think it would do fairly well. I don't think it will flop. Attendence start out very strong, and wane if the team is less than mediocre for a few years, but I don't think it will flop... I could be wrong. Quote

Zipsrifle Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 So, if the soccer stadium is built, what will the team be called? Summit county Tax Payers will pay for the stadium, but I'm pretty sure they will be named "The Cleveland XXXXXXX". That won't help Summit County/Akron with exposure, only a little extra money. It looks like Cow-lumbus attendance was OK. How many of those fans make the trip from the Akron/Cleveland area to see the games? Does the market exist in Ohio for TWO MLS Soccer teams? Seems to be that Soccer fans are pretty loyal to their sport, and would make the drive Columbus now. If a 2nd team shows up, my guess is that both teams would have crappy attendance.IMO, this is a gamble. Akron will still be playing football 30 years from now. The university isn't going to move if the soccer fanbase isn't there or another city offers a new stadium 20 years from now, that MLS team is gone!I was pretty pumped today, I got a call asking my opinion about a new football stadium. I have no doubt that a new on campus stadium will happen in the near future.....it's a done deal. I honestly believe that if the university does this right, it will be a huge asset to Akron and summit county. Sure football will only be played there 5-7 times a year, but there is no reason it couldn't also be utilized for HS games, concerts, etc. BTW, would it be a stretch to also have the UofA soccer team play in the new stadium? I think it would be great to have the facility multipurpose. Quote
K-Roo Posted December 18, 2006 Author Report Posted December 18, 2006 Just a little more fuel to the fire...http://www.ohio.com/mld/ohio/living/community/16260136.htmQ. Could the University of Akron derive funds for its proposed new stadium from the cigarette tax?A. It's no secret that the university would like to get a share of funds from such a tax to help fund its proposed football stadium. But it appears that all the money from the tax will go to the soccer stadium, based on the wording of the final legislation from Columbus. Quote
