These are novice errors! Maybe every 2 years with one of the newer shooters has someone cross fired or shot too many shots in one of the UA matches. I could see if he just blew the shot (been there too many times). Rifle is about 99.99% mental so I find it hard to believe that these guys were jittery about winning the gold. Hell, the guy won 4 NCAA titles at UAF. These guys are WAY WAY above most shooters level. Well, that's why you shoot all the shots. The only thing that is more amazing is that someone sabotaged his rifle! :blink:! This is about as exciting as 3P shooting gets folks. I do believe that every athlete will experience pressure, nerves, and jitters at a level we can not possibly imagine while at the Olympics. NCAA championships and other national matches are absolutely NOTHING compared to the Olympics. This is exactly why most of the upper echelon shooters use the other national and international championships as nothing other than training matches to prepare for the Olympics. So yes, they can and undoubtedly were jittery. Is this an excuse for making what appears as novice or rookie mistakes? Yes, I believe it is. Look at what has happened to some of the other “favorites†in the other sports. Simple and basic mistakes have time and time again eliminated the favorite allowing the next in line to get the gold. I guess I am saying we are no different than the rest of the world. It is just a shame that two such deserving persons as Emmons and Anti had to experience such humiliating errors. Knowing both of them I feel with great assuredly that they are not concerned about their personal status at all, but are definitely devastated by letting down the USA. This is a big weekend for that sport, 50 years, the winningest team on campus, other than riflery. A three time first team All-American will have his shirt retired, along with another booter who STILL holds NCAA records all these decades later! The UofA only has one National Championship, Cristi Smith in Track, and a National Runner Up, Soccer in 1986. We have to support all our teams. Go Zips!
