How to help Akron right now

Here's how to do something positive right now and it's easy:First, email the guys at WKNR and GIVE THEM PROPS for covering the Zips and the MAC. Let them know thatwin or lose, you are still an Akron fan.President/CEOCraig Karmazin ck@espncleveland.comTony Rizzo rizzo@espncleveland.comKenny Roda roadman@espncleveland.comGreg Brinda gregbrinda@espncleveland.comSecond, click onto http://wtam.com/pages/site_feedback.htmlTell WTAM 1100 (POLITELY!!!) that you're disappointed there is ZERO coverage of the Zips MAC Championship game on their website. Tell them you're more interested in Akron and the MAC than the BigEast or Ohio State. This is how we destroy the perception of Akron apathy. I saw a lot of Zip fans upset after the game. Believeme that's a GOOD sign for this program, that there ARE FANS WHO CARE A LOT ABOUT THE SCHOOL. I'm still going to wear my Zips stuff every day until there are holes in everything.

Guys, I can help you out here a little bit...WTAM did not do any significant MAC Tourney coverage because WKNR had the rights.Simple as that.Same reason why they don't significantly cover Ohio State...WKNR has the rights.Conversely...that's why you hear nothing but Indians, Browns and Cavs coverage on WTAM...they have the rights. They consider the coverage cross promotion.Good luck, but I feel your comments will fall on deaf ears. That's just the way the radio business works.

WKNR does not have the rights to the final scores. WTAM could have at least mentioned that games were played and that there were scores associated with them.
I did hear them give the final scores...each morning on the Bill Wills show. But you missed my point. They're not going to do much more because they would be promoting the event in which WKNR has the rights.Fairness and journalism has nothing do do with it.$$$$ and ratings does....not to mention a hatred for the other station.

I know this is going to be a big stretch, but WTAM could dedicate just one hour of their evening talk to local college related topics. Does anyone do it? We love to talk about this stuff online, but immagine if you could call in and be heard over the air.
If they could sell it...they would do it.There is sportsline on WTAM every night. But I'm sure that if you called about to talk about the Zips or the MAC, Kevin Keane would make quick work of the call and go on to the next topic in rapid fashion.

Plus WTAM has the rights to the Cavs, Indians and Browns. Now with spring training starting, the browns making moves, and the Cavs in the hunt to be the best in the East there isn't much room for college sports. WTAM is interested in Pro Sports, thats what they have to talk about, and thats what they broadcast. Were our games on XM or Sirus?

They do that, but it usually involves the tpoic of OSU being #1 in something or another. Local colleges are completely left out of the mix. I sometimes try to call in and talk Zips on the sports talk shows, but I always get shot down in the screening process. Once I was told that "nobody cares about Akron or Can't. They're small time" I told them that I care about local colleges and that Division I-A is not small time by any measure. The guy shot back by telling me that Akron and Can't are D-II. I let him have it over the phone before slamming the phone on him. I guess my point is that if we want to hear people talk about Akron on sports talk shows, we have to be the ones to bring it up. If they get two of three calls from Zips fans a night, even if they don't make it on the air, at least the stations will know that there are people out there who want to hear them talk about Akron.

What's WZIP doing these days. When I was sports director at WAUP in '79, we had a weekly call in show called Sportsview. We had some taped pieces in there, interviews with Coach Dennison...it was all Akron all the time. Why can't WZIP do something like this.Would be good experience for their sports guys too.

one way we could help Akron right now, is stand behind them and their coach, and not throw the coach under the bus. We could still be stuck with hipser, so be glad we have someone whos goal is to turn this program around! remember the good things that did happen this year....* we did win more games then any other year in zips history.* we did advance to the MAC title game for the first time in history.* we did play ever one of the teams we lost to close this year, unlike in past years when we were getting beat by 10-20-30 points and could barely see 1000 tickets to the games......... so be glad we are in the position we are. and if we do get a 1st round home game, make sure we sell that biotchhh out an show the zips we are still behind them!
