Dick Vitale Praises NIT Committee

I suggest that we e-mail Dick Vitale to make him aware that Akron fans have a far less than flattering view of the NIT selection committee... Our soccer team has been snubbed by the NCAA for two straight years - unfortunately we let that go with only a whimper of protest - because soccer is not a major sport. Obviously, the University of Akron (starting with the President) needs to do a better job marketing successes to change the perception of the national media, otherwise this trend will continue in all sports - major and minor. We can help also - by not letting this issue wither and die like we did with our very deserving soccer team. Dick Vitale's comments regarding the NIT selection committee: "I really like what the NIT committee has done, making the tournament like a mini-NCAA. There are a lot of solid teams in the bracket and I really feel there are several NIT squads that could have made it to the Sweet 16 at the big dance. CM Newton, Dean Smith and company have done a super job with this event. Meanwhile there have been some outstanding games in the NIT already, including Marist's win at Oklahoma State and NC State showing guts by winning at Drexel. The Massachusetts-Alabama game was also outstanding."

No disrespect, but if you were a soccer fan, you would know Akron went to the NCAA quarterfinals in soccer in 2005. But, to you its "not a major sport", so you apparently don't care about the team or its success. I hope you get a chance to actually go and see the soccer team play consistently -- or to see any good college or pro soccer, and I'm confident you will change your mind about what constitutes a "minor sport".Go Zips, go Team Caleb!

I wouldn't say that the OP should be accused of saying soccer is not a major sport. In the reality of college sports, football and basketball are the biggies. Everything else seems to get short shrift in terms of attention as well as support. Rln's statement that the soccer snubs went without much reaction because soccer isn't perceived as a major sport are not too inaccurate. There isn't an hour-long selection show on CBS or a Capital One Bowl Week for soccer, regardless of the fact that the student-athletes in the "minor" sports work just as hard representing the university as those in the "major" sports. It's sad but it's the reality...

I believe he meant the Zips got snubbed with their seed in the tournament. I remember coach Lolla and theplayers feeling slighted.
