The Hip Zip
Well from all accounts, we have three freshmen coming in who all appear to be ready to contribute immediately to the '07-'08 Zips. Add Bardo and Mc Nees to the mix and we have five bodies to fill two vacancies. So who's not going to be here next year?? Sallee??Sowers??Carroll??And dare I say Goddard??Great problem to have, but it appears that some bodies may have to hit the road.
GoZips
I think you need to recognize that all the players you listed are walk-ons.They have all earned a preferred status. Whether they are with the team next year isup to them. None of the players you list are expected to ever be more than role players. Which is not all bad. They contribute by being bodies to practice against. They get recognition as being members of the team. They gain the satisfaction ofbeing contributors. All in all, a nice reward for a person who has a skill level justbelow that of a scholarship player. Each one deserves the kudos he earns. The Zips are thankful for the contributions theymake for the team. As fans we recognize them when they get into a game by vigorouslycheering them on. Its a good feeling for them. One that is hard earned. So, let us thank them all for their hard work, dedication and contribution to making ourZips the best mid-major program on the planet. The Hip Zip
I do understand everything that you stated and fully agree that their contributions are valued. Perhaps better questions would be: Is there a limit on the number of players on an NCAA basketball roster? and how many playes can be red-shirted in a given season? I don't think that a limit on players will be a problem. We are only gaining 1 more player on the team compared to last year. Remember that is because of the whole Bubba debacle, which means that we should be fine, since we had that many players on the team two years ago. timmyboy
I hope goddard works on his defense and shot selection this summer. He is a fire shooter from behind the arc, but i think he puts it up to quick and doesnt work to get his shots. He gets a pass and fires it right up. If he were to work on his Defense and have better shot selection next year, dare i say he could be a very good bench player for us.
skip-zip
All I can say is, "thank God for this recruiting class". I'm sure Keith would really like to be able to give more minutes to some guys on the bench, but not enough of them showed progress this year.I'm sure all of us feel the same way. Didn't we all expect to see more out of Conyers, Rybak, and McKnight this year? Will we be better next year? Who knows. But we'll certainly be deeper. Quickzips
It is going to be interesting to see just who gets playing time and when next year. I suspect all the guys you listed there will serve the same role they did this year. Bench fodder that can come in at the end of a blowout for garbage time. One question that kind of interests me though, could we have two true freshman starting by the end of the season? Think about it. Swiech is supposedly a guy who will come in right away and be ready to play in this conference. Having him as more of a true center than Wood is would open things up for us a lot. Wood could then move over to the 4 spot vacated by Romeo where he's probably a little better suited. Then you have Steward who is supposed to be a very competent PG, something we don't really have on this team right now. I fully expect the year to start off with Dials at PG and Cedrick at SG, but I also think KD likes having Cedrick there as the 6th man coming off the bench and wouldn't be at all surprised to see Steward worked in as the PG to move Dials back to his more natural position and let Cedrick be that sparkplug off the bench again. Especially if Steward comes in as good as advertised.
skip-zip
And what if Brett McKnight starts scoring some points from that small forward spot? We didn't get much point production from that spot this year with Linhart in there. Or, maybe we'll just be playing 3 guards more often. Hard to tell. I guess it will depend upon how quickly the new guys come along.

Especially if Steward comes in as good as advertised. Not to take anything away from Dials and Cedrick, but neither can effectively run the point. They both play SG and that is why we always had ball handling and TO issues everytime Dru was getting a break on the bench this year.Either McNeese or Steward should step up and handle the point very early next year. As far as the big guys, i expect the seniors (Quade and J-Wood) to start at 4 and 5 with McKnight, Bardo, and Swiech coming of the bench. If Swiech lives up to the hype, he should take over the C position before the beginning of MAC play.
zipboy
I do hope that the talent is deep enough and KD has enough confidence to give 9-10 guys decent playing time each game. This helps in the long run. I look for Wood, Dials, and Middleton to be the only guys getting 30+ minutes per night and hopefully in the low 30's. Steward is the one guy in the new class that I hope is ready to contribute now. As a few of you point out above, we need a true PG. If Steward gives 20-25 quality minutes per game, we will be in good shape.
RACER
all good post. the only real weakness is see is at pg.we have plenty of bodies in the front line for next year. even if the kid from pa,and bardo can come in, and give j.wood some rest we should be ok.we still have mcknight and quade for the front line help. Zip Watcher
To answer some questions from above:The Scholi limit is 13 .. and with the 3 frosh coming in (mcknight, steward, swiech), we'll be full.Returning players (10) on scholarship are:Seniors (4): Wood, Dials, Middleton, MilumJuniors (3): Linhart, Rybak, ConyersSophomores (1): McKnightRS Frosh (2): McNees, BardoShould he continue his progress toward a degree at the required pace, Conyers will be able to get a year back, and then fall back to being a senior when Chris McKnight is .. so that could change things.I know that KD likes to have a smooth rotation of players .. doesn't want to have classes of 5 & 6 guys to recruit .. I think he likes to bring in 3,3,3, and 4 ... so the redshirts sort of screw that up. But the reality is that he's had a veteran club & minutes would have been non-existant for Steve & Mike this year.Oh, and there is NO limit imposed on NCAA on the total roster size (as far as google can find), so having 4 walkons carry over this year to next and adding another appears to be fine. I think there may be a 15 or 16 player travel restriction .. but I'm not even sure about that. The Russel kid from Toledo is an intriguing thing if in fact rumors end up being true. The preferred walk on may mean the Copley kid gets a ride as a sophomore if the staff doesn't fill the 4 spots for the 08 incoming class? zipfan 81
Sorry preferred walk-on means nothing, Goddard was a preferred walk-on, and pretty sure Sallee was also.
blueandgold
Preferred walk-ons are really nothing more than role players to fill out your roster. Every now and then you find a diamond in the rough, but not often.
