longtimezip
A great step in the right direction. They have learned from their previous mistake. This will be great for UA sports. Look for live call in show following Zips games and much more as far as local sports in the very near future on 1350.
zip37
Good news, we need a local sports talk station, hope they hire somebody with knowledge of the Zips and a love for the school. I was sick of those libs on the previousformat.

zip81
I wouldn't look for any great infusion of local sports talk. They're going Sporting News Radio...all satellite all the time.Local sports talk costs money and these stations live on a shoestring budget....sad to say.I would think the most we could expect would be more local programming wrapped around the Akron games...but that would be about it. zipboy
Even when Joe Dunn had his weekly call in show once a week about high school sports, he talked about the Zips half the time. Just gettting something like that back would be a good step.

Big Zip
I think it was Ann Coulter who said conservative talk radio has a built in audience "People on there way to and from work." Guess she was right (no pun intended) liberal radio dies in greater cleveland again and I couldn't be happier -- I refused to program 1350 in either of my cars. I dialed it in everytime. Guess "talk" radio is cheap, but at least that derivative Crazy Coulter can still offer her nutritional bile for right wing alarmists. As for 1350 being all sports, cool with me, especially if Zips coverage is expanded. zen
I don't think I have ever listened to Ann Coulter, but one thing is for sure, if you want to listen to liberals you can turn on the nightly network news or CNN. That's the reason "conservative" talk radio gets a strong base and liberal talk radio can't. The more dominant media markets are flush with libs (almost all of whom call themselves moderates). If you want to actually hear a "conservative", you have to go find one, which is what people do.
zip81
More on the format change on Ohio Media Watch:http://www.ohiomedia.blogspot.com/Don't look for any more local talk from these jokers...only more flesh on their Web site home page. skip-zip
This is great news for the Zips. The reason that liberal talk radio doesn't work is because people are pretty tired of a group that garners support by doing nothing but bashing the current government, and doesn't present any viable plans for an alternative. This movement died in the 60's. Let it R.I.P. Please.

mcperp
The reason why people tune in to drug addicts like Limbaugh, sexually deviant and ultimately impotent O'reilly, "Slot Machine" Bill Bennett, "I'll shoot ya in the face" Chaney, serial philanderer Gingrich, and the other assorted felons and miscreants is the same reason that Jerry Springer, ironically, is so popular; hate, lying, and half-baked declarations posing as truth is always more palatable to those looking for poor saps even more miserable than themselves. Why bother with intelligent discourse when it's easier to devolve into a culture of hate and prejudices with the rabid bleating of reactionary talk show hosts. Hate and fear in digestible radio doses sell. I'd much rather hear the opinions of righties like Bill Kristol, Christie Todd Whitman, George Will or William Buckley because there is thought and erudition supporting their remarks.Anyways, nothing wrong with another good sports station which I think is at least one thing most lefties and righties can agree upon. That's good, but I have problems getting a clear signal when I'm heading west coming home from the JAR and that's IN AKRON! I'd much rather listen on an FM station. Yeah, I thought it was a thread about a radio station on a sports blog as well, but if you look at the responses, the slippery slope into politics was initiated by someone else. A blog is about give and take. remember? Contemptuous? maybe, truthful?, yep One benefit of 1350 is the return of Tony Bruno to the airwaves. He's humorous and passionate and especially good during football season.

I personally couldn't care if Ann Coulter was a transvestite, Rush Limbaugh did heroin, or if Rosie Odonnel went to orgies every night of the week. That's because I am a libertarian and I actually believe people can do whatever they want to themselves as long as they don't hurt anyone else.So-called liberals (who are usually lite socialists in sheeps clothing) pretend to be free-minded liberals, but they tend to be the most vindictive judgemental people you ever meet. The reason I can't listen to political talk radio (right or left) is for the same reason I can't listen to sports talk radio for very long, other than the current events news reporting, it's always the same stuff on a different day. GoZips88
I would assume that Zip broadcasts have priority over Columbus Blue Jacket hockey?Hey Clear Channel - jack the transmission tower up a few more feet and turn up the power a bit so I can actually hear Zip football and basketball broadcasts way out in Norton and Copley Ohio. I know, I know ... regulated by the FCC Hey Mack - figure out a way to convince 640AM to send Can't State and Bill Needle packing in favor of Akron and Steve French. Can't and Needle belong on something like 1350 where nobody can hear them.
zen
If I am not mistaken, the main determination for how much AM signal strength you get is by how close (geographic distance * their signal strength) of a competing station on the same frequency. I'm sure that if they could get their signal boosted, they would. The hardware upgrade is always a relatively negligable investment compared to the increased range. Actually....how high an antenna is has nothing to do with the power of an AM station.Having said that, it has everything to do with the power of an FM or TV station.1350 is a directional pattern with a nighttime mode that makes it difficult to hear. In addition, 1350 is not a very powerful frequency.Having said that, 640 is a great frequency. The only other 640 is KFI in Los Angeles. It has a nighttime mode, but still much better than 1350...and it is being wasted on Can't State. How sad is that? zipboy
I may be the only one here who has trouble, but I can never get 640 in where I live in Northern Summitt county. 1350 is much more clear for me. Seems like we need more multiple stations to accomodate everyone.
zip81
both 640 and 1350 have directional signals, but you would think you would get them in "Summit County.Perhaps the answer is putting the Zips on 1590 WAKR, like they used to be. WZIP would be another good alternative. They come in pretty good since they got a side mount way up on a TV tower in Copley. When I was going to the U, the Zips used to be on both stations...WAKR and WAUP.
