GoZips
Cant State proudly, and perhaps unwisely, has agreed to broadcast their sports eventson WNIR for the next five years. This opens the possibility of the Zips moving to the far more powerful WHLO. One can only hope.Link To Good News
bobbyake
Can't State is garbage. Sooner or later that University is going to be another local tech school.
skip-zip
You know. The ribbing against Can't State is funny. But I think that they should at least get credit for managing to upgrade to local FM radio. I wish we could do the same. We've always been on AM radio. I'm sure they managed to do so based on their recent basketball success and NCAA tournament success. I can't see them getting such a deal because of their football.Time for us to step up and upgrade as well.
GoZips88
I'll take WHLO. 1350's signal just plain sucks. I have NO problem getting 640AM way out here in Norton.

And if you can't get 1590's power, then go for 640.

Cant games (bb &fb) have been broadcast onWNIR for some time now. And by the way the broadcast sucks!!!!!!!!!!!! We would do better with another AM station. WAKR is out, only because they have contracts with the Indians,Browns and Cavs. All of those games would take precedence over Zip games. 1350 stinks. 640 is not too bad, but between the the university and the station they have to obtain the adviertising dollars. That is what pays for the broadcasts. We can't expect the radio station(s) to do the games for gratis or for a loss.
skip-zip
Thanks for the info. akronad. You're right. I was in the dark. I've never listened to a Can't radio broadcast, so I wouldn't have known. I thought this was a new deal.We used to be on WAKR back in the 80's. I guess that wouldn't work now with their pro sports broadcasts. I agree, 1350's signal is pretty poor.
Red
I live in D.C. and on a good day or night I can hear 1350, but I agree that WHLO is stronger would be nice to have both
zen
question is, how long is the contract with 1350?
zip81
Thinking out loud.....Back in the day....the Zips were on both WAUP and WAKR. At the time, WAKR also broadcast the Browns and Indians and seemed to be able to handle the Zips football and basketball too. Can't State was on WKNT, which is now WNIR.Conflicts that may occur now that didn't back then, is because of the MAC's deal with ESPN, which has us playing football possibly any darn day of the week, which could conflict with Indians baseball early in the season. WAKR also broadcasts the Cavs, which could mean big time conflict with Zips basketball.WHLO is not a bad way to go. Great daytime signal...acceptable nighttime signal...both, way better than 1350, which has a very critical nighttime signal.I wouldn't think there would be any contractual issues switching from 1350 to 640 because they are both owned by Clear Channel. Here's the rub. 1350 is a sports station. Clear Channel probably thinks it should have the Akron games on there where putting them on WHLO, a conservative talk station, doesn't make as much sense. My only hunch as to why WZIP, a non-commercial FM, doesn't broadcast the games anymore is that if a commecial station pays rights to the games, they want an exclusive.Such apparently wasn't the case when I went to the U. I think WAKR thought of us as a college station with kids doing the broadcasts, which couldn't compete with them, plus they cut us some slack because we were a college station just trying to get experience.Bottome line...I think the Zips will stay on 1350...unfortunately. BZip_08
Can't State Hatewell I happened to be studying abroad in Greece... and there was a group of students from Lake High School there for a little while. A girl walked in front of me in a pink Can't shirt... I literally growled a little. My hate runs deep...
FearTheRoo
Why anyone would think moving to an FM signal is an "upgrade" is beyond me. We want quality AND sigal reach, right? Most Akron FM stations barely penetrate in Akron let alone outside of Akron. Hell, I am pretty sure WZIP has THE STRONGEST FM signal in the city! For those that don't have an Akron zip code, AM is MUCH better. ...and ANYTHING is much better than 1350. I seriously thought I saw a few hamsters running in wheels under the desk by Frenchy's feet to power their board!

WKDD has never been the same since they went from 96.5 to 98.1.WQMX, the former WDBN was 135,000 watts at one time, However, I believe they moved their stick to a higher location, which would require lower wattage. When I was at WAUP, the tower was on top of Kolbe Hall...3,000 watts at about 170 feet. Now, WZIP has a side mount on one of those TV towers out in Copley...a lot more antenna heighth...but lower wattage...antenna heighth is much more important with FM and TV, which is FM.
