sgm405
There's a lot of open threads right now, so this is kind of a response to them and a bit of extra...just random thoughts I guess. And we'll do it Peter King style lolTEN THINGS I THINK AFTER YESTERDAY'S GAME-----------------------------------------------------I think...1. ...the Zips came ready to play and that Brookhart had them ready to go. They didn't seem to play scared at all (which many teams do in games like this) and played like they expected to win. A very good sign about the team's overall attitude. 2) ...if they had any offense, they might've had a chance at winning the ballgame. OSU's wasn't much better, but they won the battle of the lines in the end, which sealed their victory. 3) ...that Akron gave OSU quite a scare...and that MAC teams are doing that a lot this year, evening earning a few upsets. It's a great thing for the conference - hopefully people notice. 4) ...that at the same time, with Akron playing well and OSU playing an absolutely horrid game - they still won by 18 points. While we've definitely taken a step in the right direction, I think that says a lot about the still-wide gap between the two programs. 5) ...that the new Fear the Roo logo is cool...but changing it already? Seems too soon. 6) ...that the Zips have a really good shot at beating Indiana, but that they'll have to come out with the same intensity next week that they did against OSU. Every game on the remaining schedule is a very winnable game. 7) ...that Jabari Arthur is going to have a big year. How about him shaking off OSU tackle-attempts like it was nothing? Dude is a beast...let's hope JD takes full advantage of his skills. Too bad Harvey isn't still around...that'd be a heckuva 1-2 punch. 8) ...that the atmosphere at an OSU game is absolutely amazing. Love them or hate them, you have to admit that it's college football atmosphere at it's best, with the energy from the crowd and all of the traditions. I hope once the new stadium opens, we can go from 100 students yelling and the alumni sitting on their asses to something like this. 9) ...that the only way that fan base will grow is if Zips fans quit this "woe is me" attitude. Attacking other teams' fans and traditions, saying they aren't that good, complaining about what shirts the waitresses are wearing at a sports bar, what game a bar's TVs have on, complaining anytime the entire sports section of the paper isn't devoted to UA, attacking fans of your own school. There are tons and tons of amazing, passionate, great Zips fans, and you make us all look bad. Instead of pushing people away from Akron football, help build the fan base up. Pulling this crap - like telling someone they'll never go anywhere in life because they cheer for another team - isn't going to do that. 10) ...that following this post, it'd be nice if we could all move forward as "Zips fans", united in the goal of winning the MAC and reaching a Bowl Game once again...sharing thoughts intelligently, not bashing each other for silly reasons, and welcoming fans from other teams who might come to this board throughout the year. We have a team and a city to be proud of - let's make it so that we are able to say the same thing about our fan base. Heck, I need a #11...11) GO ZIPS! Buckzip
SGM, good post and with the exception of #4, I agree.#4 is a little degrading to the Zips. Not that I disagree, but it didn't need to be said.IMHO
sgm405
SGM, good post and with the exception of #4, I agree.#4 is a little degrading to the Zips. Not that I disagree, but it didn't need to be said.IMHO I don't look at it that way, but I can understand how it could be taken that way as well. Let me clarify...Many think the Zips are already as good as the OSU's, Penn State's, Wisconsin's, Michigan's (OK, maybe them ), but this game proved otherwise to me. OSU played horrible football...and won by 18. The gap is certainly closing fast, but is still there. I do think that when the teams meet again, Akron may finally pull off the victory...I really do. Buckzip
I know what you meant. A alos happen to agree with you.I only mean that a few people on here are pretty thin skinned when it comes to OSU.They can take what was a great post and only remember that one sentence. Class of 82
OSU played a horrid game? Their defense looked like the '77 Steelers yesterday. As for their offense, it looked to me like they ran into a pretty good Zips D that took an inordinately long time to wear down.Other than that minor disagreement, great post.Tough test for OSU next week against what looks like a resurgent Washington. And the Indiana team Akron sees next week is not the Indiana we were hoping we'd see when this game was scheduled.GO ZIPS!
skip-zip
Well, since this is a chat board, and you can't often derive the true meaning of what someone says, you have to comment on posts based on what you read. So, for good reason, I have the same opinion about #4. Now, before a couple of you detractors decide to accuse me of being partial to the Zips, I DO IN FACT BELIEVE THAT THERE IS STILL A GAP BETWEEN A TOP LEVEL BIG 10 TEAM, AND A TEAM LIKE AKRON. So, that's not my point. My point is, you won't find people who will look at this particular game as an example of a game where a top-level team played awful, and a mid-major team played well, but since the top level team still won, it proves that a large gap still exists between these schools. Akron played good defensively, and so did Ohio State. Akron played poorly offensively, and Ohio State did as well, for most of the game. Both teams played poorly in some facets, and great in others. So, the comment about Akron playing well and Ohio State playing "absolutely horrid" (I'm sure Ohio State's defense would love to hear that comment after the way they played) is an assessment that sounds like an OSU fan trying to find some way to twist the realities of this game so that they can convince themselves that there MUST be some other reason why the game played out as closely as it did for the better part of 3 quarters when they were a 30 point favorite. Just take it for what it was, and don't paint this as a game where poor, poor Akron gave a solid performance, but still came up woefully short against a team that was just strolling along without a care. That's simply not the case.
zip81
, complaining about what shirts the waitresses are wearing at a sports bar,I was complaining that the manager would be so petty as to not let her waitress (one waitress) wear an Akron shirt.I don't apologize for that. Windfall or not, asking one waitress to change because someone requested she wears a Zips shirt is sad. I would call and complain about that manager. That is BS

I don't think I've ever heard so many people complain about a waitress taking her shirt off!!! We watched the game at the Lizard in Mentor. Mostly Buckeye fans with two tables of Zips fans (the others were Jacquemain's family--Gma and extended). The place was QUIET in the first half, and never got crazy. The OSU fans in that bar, at least, didn't leave feeling it was an easy game.
