Zipsrifle
Well, the Zips faced a VERY tough opponent this past weekend. Navy finished 3rd last season and missed 2nd by a scant 3 points in the Championship match. The Zips shot fairly well, setting new record in Air Rifle. The Zips fell short of Navy by about 100 points. Of course, if coach would pick the right team, they would have only lost by 60. (By the way, Coach has to pick the teams prior to the match) Here's the Article: Date: October 16, 2004 Location: The University of Akron Event: Akron -vs- Navy Navy Marksmen Sail Past Akron Laura Kuntz sets new school record The Zips sharpshooters hosted the US Naval academy for the first home rifle match of the season. The midshipmen are considered one of the top rifle teams in the nation and lived up to their reputation as they finished ahead of both of the Zips squads. Navy marksman Matt Albright lead the pack in both smallbore rifle and air rifle by posting an amazing score of 591 with both rifle’s. But Akron was right on his heels with the help of outstanding performances like the 586 in air rifle fired by Zips sophomore Laura Kuntz. This exceptional score is the new school record for 60 shot air rifle. “Laura is just beginning to realize what she is capable of accomplishing.†states head coach Newt Engle, “Laura is a team leader in many ways and has earned this honor through good old fashion hard work.†Not to be overlooked is the strong performances of several of Laura’s teammates who posted air rifle scores in the solid 570’s. In the smallbore division Akron’s Sarah Kramer (578) lead the Zips squad with her best performance of the season. And firing in the solid 570’s was team captain Joe Milano and junior Angie Engle. “This team keeps getting stronger and stronger with each passing day.†states coach Engle, “The team is just beginning to realize their potential.†The Zips will have a week off before they travel to Purdue University to compete in the Boilermaker Invitational tournament on October 30th. zipper
While I hope our Zips beat every opponent, I take some comfort that we were not able to beat a branch of our military in marksmanship
