MAC Officiating

From over on the MAC messageboard:Link"Sports news on 96.5 this morning was a brief report that the MAC had issued an apolegy to Coach Cubit for officials missing two pivotal penalty calls against Akron during the return that won the game.MAC Officials blow."and then there is this:Link 2"When Can't State head coach Doug Martin revealed the MAC had called to apologize for a game-changing call late in the flushes' loss at Akron two weeks ago, the league was furious he made the internal communication public. They were also outraged by the school admitting it had asked the league to review film of several other disputed plays.""This very weekend, Akron coach J.D. Brookhart was openly critical of the MAC officials who worked the Zips 39-38 victory at Western Michigan. He called his team's game-winning touchdown return in the final seconds "justice" after a controversial instant-replay decision went against the Zips earlier in the night."Clearly, in our eyes Jabari Arthur was in the end zone on the one play that they ruled out," said Brookhart. "We thought maybe the last play could've been more justice than luck because of the previous call."Fortunately, Brookhart's team found vindication on the scoreboard, because it wasn't going to find it from the league office. The MAC is probably already preparing to reprimand Brookhart for his comments instead of trying to figure out why schools are paying $19,000 per year to pay for an instant-replay system that doesn't work.Officiating in the MAC is a problem, but the MAC wants to treat it like the dead elephant in the middle of its living room. Nothing is going to change until Chryst admits the problem and holds his officials accountable for unwarrented mistakes.Believe me, if there are inaccuracies in this column, Chryst would expect me to print a retraction in tomorrow's newspaper. Why are the MAC's head coaches not deserving of the same satisfaction? The day is eventually going to come when a head coach gets fired because of an incompetent call that robs his team of a game. I'm sure that coach will be thrilled to get his phone call from the league on Monday morning with another nice, private apology."

I couldn't see anything on the youtube clip but I'm surprised there wasn't a flag. With MAC officials, they either call one where there isn't or miss a blatant foul. As for Doug Martin, I have absolutely no sympathy for him and his team. It seems all he does in whine when they lose. It's always someone else's fault. I don't really remember any penalty that could have been called against Akron in that game that would have changed the outcome. He's just a poor sport. On a related note, why does Akron always, ALWAYS, get celebration penalties called. They can give a simple high-five and get a penalty called.
