johnnyzip84
I hear it from a little birdie that John Mackey may be attempting to play again in 2007. I'm assuming that this could be because the NCAA has given indication that they will not be granting him a red-shirt year? While I admire the courage and have always enjoyed watching #19 play, I'm not sure if I think this is such a good idea. I don't have any details, but I would think that his decision would probably be affected by whether the Zips remain in contention or not. Has anyone else heard a similar rumor? uafan
I've also heard that. He doesn't think he'll get the medical redshirt, so he wants to play. I hope for his sake, he doesn't. Walking when you're older is much more important!
akronad
As good a player and perosn that John is, I hope he doesn't attempt the comeback. Yes, I would love to se back playing defense for us, but sacrificing his body for the rest of his life is just no worth. He already has a shoulder problem that will be with him forever, and his knee, even though it can be surgically repaired, will give him fits from time to time.I truly admire his grit and determination and wish John nothing but the best of fortune for the rest of his life. skip-zip
His medical redshirt would have been almost impossible to attain. He played over the allowable time to get a medical. And I don't see anyone changing that rule for him. Remember, John Mackey is a different breed. He loves to play football so much that he would do something like this. He knows it's probably his last chance to ever play the game, so I can't really blame him for giving it a shot. From what I recall, his injury was not going to require surgery, and may not have been all that severe. If that is the case, maybe some rest has already started to heal the damage enough that he can return before the end of the season. But I'm no doctor. I'd love to see him out on the field again. GoZips88
I work with a guy who absolutely LOVED playing high school football (lineman on both sides of the ball). He is now in his 50s and deals with a lot of knee pain daily. He's probably heading towards a double knee replacement at some point (he's on the heavier side and probably isn't a candidate for less-invasive partial knee replacement). He would be the first person to tell Mackey that the rest of his life is more important than another year of football. My work friend and I vote 'NO - Do NOT try to return.'My father-in-law is an avid Syracuse fan and loves watching football. He vowed this year to stop watching pro and college football. He feels guys have gotten too big and the game too fast for the human body. Way too many injuries in his opinion.
