ZachTheZip Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Rifle swept a five-team tournament over the weekend and are off to a great start in the MAC (Mid-Atlantic Conference).http://www.gozips.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_...;ATCLID=1302612AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron rifle team swept the competition in a five-team home tournament this weekend, posting key Mid-Atlantic Conference (MAC) victories over the Virginia Military Institute and John Jay College. “The MAC is a strong conference and both VMI and John Jay are very competitive schools who are on the upswing,” UA head coach Newt Engle said. “We didn’t take them lightly and knew we could not afford to slack up.”With a combined score of 4,526 out of a possible 4,800 the Zips claimed top honors, followed by VMI (4,408), John Jay College (4,068), VMI Mixed (4,051) and Indiana University of Pennsylvania (3,653).Junior Julie DeBrita (Scotia, N.Y./Scotia Glenville) fired a 570 in the smallbore for a second-place finish and fell in a tiebreaker to teammate Megan Reinking (Fort Wayne, Ind./Concordia Lutheran) for the top slot in the air rifle competition with each shooter tallying 571 points. In all, UA dominated each category with four of the top five shooters in the smallbore and nine of the top ten scores in the air rifle. Freshman Rebecca Gerevics (Darien Center, N.Y./Alden Central) turned in another impressive weekend with third-place finishes in both the smallbore (565) and the air rifle (568) events. “We had some impressive individual performances in specific areas at this match, but overall we were kind of flat as a team,” Engle said. “We know to win the conference we need to consistently be in the upper 570’s and to have a chance at the NCAA’s, we need to be in the low to mid 580’s. Every one of our athletes has fired these types of scores. Our challenge is to establish an upward and consistent trend.”The Zips will next host the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in another MAC contest this Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. in Shrank Hall South.
