timmyboy
Its the same rant, just a different year. Whats up with there only being 4 member of the student group, A-K Rowdies at the girls game today. I was in line for food at halftime of the boys game and i heard one of the female basketball players in front of me saying "Its crazy how they only get 5-10 members of our student group ( AK Rowdies) to come to their games, but they swarm to the mens games. If they had a little more support and they showed that they actually cared about our team, we might play a little better". Now dont get all worked up because i know what people will say, "they should play hard no matter who is in the stands, because they are on scholly" But lets not be "fair weather fans" and only show up when the sporting teams are doing good........... how bout showing up to support all of the athletic teams win or lose. I noticed that at the football games also... when they were staying more competitive there were alot more AK Rowdies there but as the season went on and akron was losing games, the numbers really started to decline.... lets go to and support all of our athletic teams, not just the ones who are winning! ZachTheZip
I was there. You know, I honestly believe that with just a bit more fan support, the women's team can turn into a real competitive force at home.
zippyrifle32
home fans do help performance no matter what the sport (rifle included). the should have more people there, but the reality is that they don't and that people are usually more interested in men's sports anyways. the only thing the people who say it's not right can do is show up and support them. timmyboy
I was there. You know, I honestly believe that with just a bit more fan support, the women's team can turn into a real competitive force at home.I agree. Look what happened today when the 350-450 people that were there started getting into it. They were down by 23 points at one time in the 2nd half ( with 10 minutes remaining) and cut it down to just 2 points very quickly. The lady zips basketball team isnt as bad as their record indicates they have had a few tought breaks as a team with losing one of their top returners in Tokadi, and there have been a few games i believe that they only lost bya few points. Which one were you? the one yelling and saying how ugly their mascot was? That thing was pathetic, and whats up with the hand motion he did ALL GAME! NEVER EVER have a seen a bird or hawk make that kind of motion, so maybe they should send that crackhead hawk to the Zippy 101. How to become the nations best mascot
sgm405
I'm sure someone will paint me as a sexiest for saying this, but I'll be blunt:Very few people care about women's basketball. It's painted as a "fundamental team game", yet the game is slow, the play is sloppy, and the contest is absent of the elite athleticism that draws people to the men's game. We as fans are drawn to the men's game at both the collegiate and pro level because the athletes can go above and beyond and do things on a basketball court that 95% of us could only dream of doing. Although the ladies are very talented basketball players, they simply don't do this. Give me an all-star team from Akron's mens intramural league and I'll give you a win over the Zips women's team. If the students won't show up every game for a 26 win men's team that's successful year in, year out, they're certainly not going to show the women's team. zipboy
I would not say they swarm to the men's games. The ones that come are great but the section is not that big.
plowerman78
i was one of the rowdies that was there yesterday and i have to agree that hawk had to be the ugliest mascot i have ever seen, it looked like it was wearing my grandmas old sweater on just ugly, plus the thing was shedding everywhere too, just by far one of the worst mascot's ever
Big Zip
SGM-- I certainly won't call you sexist, but I will agree with you. Funny thing is I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and told my wife we should take her to a women's game or two. My WIFE told me NO, lets just take her to the men's games. They work their asses off and have shown great improvement over the past 2-3 seasons. Personally, I wouldn't mind watching their product. But most Americans just don't care enough about women's athletics to watch them. Look at the WNBA - if the NBA wasn't funneling money into it, it'd be dead by now. skip-zip
sgm...although I feel that you are sometimes on another planet with some of your commentaries, this is pretty accurate.I'm getting up there in age, so I've been around this environment quite some time as a major supporter of the Zips. And although I have always hoped that we'd draw some revenue from women's games, I have also come to reality.Yes, the athleticism is a factor, and so is the "I want to see people doing things that I cannot do". But beyond that, people seek entertainment. And the crowds, and the athletes, and everything else attached to a men's game will just always bring forth a more superior brand of sports entertainment. ZippyRulz
The womens games would be a lot of fun if they were competitive nationally. Girls HS bb is fun to watch at the tourney level when there is an outstanding player like Katie Smith, Lisa Cline, Marcie Alberts, etc. playing. Not so many dunks but still some exciting competition and drama.
