Big Zip Posted November 26, 2004 Report Posted November 26, 2004 Nebraska and Arkansas losses helped the Zips bowl chances today. We could know by tomorrow evening if the Zips will have a bowl bid. Quote

suziq Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 What has to happen next for the Zips to get a bowl berth? Thanks in advance! Quote
Z-Pouch Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Fox Bowl Predictions From what I have seen FOx Sports has the most likely scenerio. For this to happen, the Zips will beat out Marshall for the last spot in the Silicon Bowl which the MAC so cleverly worked out a deal to lock out conference dead beat Marshall -- for all of this to happen some key games are listed below -- thanks to BZ. Hawaii is 5-5 with 5 Div. 1-A wins -- home games with Northwestern (6-5) and Michigan State (5-6) left. ----- Northwestern must win Southern Mississippi 5-4 with 5 Div. 1-A wins at Alabama Birmingham (7-3) and at California (9-1). ----- Southern Miss must lose both Syracuse 5-5 with 5 Div. 1-A wins at Boston College (8-2) left. ------ BC must win with Freshman QB starting 1st game if the year ?!!??!? I'm not sure that is all but these seem to be the key games - All Zips needed wins are favorites !!!!!!! Marshall seems to be the biggest threat of taking our spot if all goes well in these games. Big Zip Posted November 27, 2004 Author Report Posted November 27, 2004 There are four key games to watch today. Hawaii and Northwestern -- both teams have an opportunity to be bowl eligbile. Northwestern wins and they are bowl eligible and Hawaii is out. If Hawaii wins Northwestern is out, but for Hawaii to be in they still have to beat Michigan State. South Florida has to beat Memphis today and Pitt next week to be eligible. Syracuse has to beat Boston College to be eligible. Tulane and TCU both still have an opportunity to be eligible. They play each other today and if Tulane beats TCU they will still need to beat Louisville to be eligible. If TCU wins Tulane is out and TCU is eligible. If you are a Zips fan your rooting for Hawaii to beat Northwestern to eliminate Northwestern. Hawaii as noted above will still have to beat Michigan State to be eligible. Memphis to beat South Florida and eliminate them from being eligible. Boston Collge to beat Syracuse to eliminate them. Tulane to beat TCU. This would eliminate TCU, but Tulane would still have to beat Louisville which will be difficult. What probably happens today. Northwestern wins and becomes eligible (elimats Hawaii), TCU beats Tulane making TCU eligible -- both South Florida and Syracuse lose and are eliminated from bowl contention. Should this happen you will have 57 bowl eligible teams for 56 slots. If the MAC got involved in the Silicon Valley Bowl for reasons suggested above this could be how Akron ends up playing in San Jose while Marshall sits at home. Regardless one team from the MAC this year doesn't get in -- Marshall or Akron? One would think the conference would want Akron to go bowling. At the end of the day one of the real amazing things about all of this is the MAC will most likely get five teams in bowls this year and have an ouside shot at six. Quote
Guest ***GUEST_Z.I.P. Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 I am very skeptical about the chances of the Silicon Valley Bowl -- the rumors for over a week have had the SVB interested in Bowling Green. I continue to believe Akron's best chance of a bowl game is jus'down the street from me in Aloha Stadium. The reason is simply that this may be the bowl game no one wants (believe it or not!), because it is so expensive to travel to Hawai'i. UTEP turned it down for Houston, so the only WAC team that can claim the bid is the home Hawai'i Warrior squad, which must beat two Big Ten teams (Northwestern and Michigan St) to be eligible. Along with the travel expense is the requirement to sell (or at least purchase) 5,000 tickets at $40 ea. That's a $200k expense, and only BCS schools can come close to selling that many tix to Hawai'i. The other consideration in the Hawai'i Bowl is timing. IF Hawai'i defeats Northwestern tonight, the world must wait until the end of the Hawai'i-Mich State game, which will not be till Sunday morning, Dec 5 EST, to see whether the Warriors will play at home, or if another team claims the "prize". SO, if there is ANY other bowl game that isn't filled prior to that date, Akron would try to get into it -- even if it's vs a stronger opponent (e.g., Colorado or Ia St. in Ft Worth Bowl?), so that they know their destiny. AND -- here's the strangest sequence of events yet -- with Nebraska and Arkansas losing on Friday, there's a real possibility that the MAC could send an unbelievable SIX teams to bowl. Yes -- both Akron AND Marshall could fill slots, unless Syracuse or Hawai'i win out. See CBS Sportsline.com's bowl predictions for this eventuality. Please God! -- Do not send Marshall over to Hawai'i. Quote
zipboy Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 If we get it, I am in except for possibly Hawaii. That is a hard one to do on Christmas Eve. F Marshall. They may bring 1000 people to Boise and we would bring 500, big deal. This year, Charlie Frye is the marquee guy. Come on MAC, get Akron in. Quote
zipboy Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 South Florida bites the dust!!! Quote
Big Zip Posted November 27, 2004 Author Report Posted November 27, 2004 Boston College looks like they are going to let us down 30-10 with 12 minutes to go in the fourth. Way to go BC -- thanks for nothing. Quote
Z-Pouch Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Does it come down to the following with the Syracuse win ? Hawaii beating Northwestern and then losing to Michigan State. Eliminating both Hawaii and Northwestern. Quote
Guest Guest Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Well, UAB is about to let Southern Miss become bowl eligible, and Tulane is losing by a score to TCU. Thanks for nothing to those assholes too. C-USA is taking care of their own. Quote
Guest OLDSCHOOLZIP Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Alriiiiiiiight!! Tulane came back and upset TCU. That's huge for the Zips. Now we need a Hawaii victory tonight, and then Tulane and Hawaii to both lose next week and it looks like we can say Aloha . Quote
mollautt Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 =>56 teams now eligible (not counting S. Carolina and Clemson). This means all bowls will be played. Only 3 teams on the bubble: 5-5 Tulane (hosts L'ville) 6-5 Northwestern (@ Hawaii) 5-5 Hawaii (hosts Northwestern and Michigan St. and must win both) Loser of N'western/Hawaii game knocked out. ****** MAC can do no worse than 4 bowl teams (as no more than 58 teams can be bowl eligible for 56 spots). Root for Hawaii to beat N'western and then lose to Michigan St. then all 6 MAC teams go to a bowl. Also root for Tulane to lose to L'ville. Quote
Big Zip Posted November 28, 2004 Author Report Posted November 28, 2004 Southern Miss is not yet bowl eligible -- they need to beat Cal. Quote
mollautt Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 =>So. Miss is bowl eligible with a 6-4 record. A loss to Cal still puts them at 6-5. Guest ***GUEST_Z.I.P. Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Guess what folks!! My Hawai'i Warriors came through -- knocking the Big Ten down to just 6 bowl eligible teams. Ex-Miami coach Randy Walker tried and succeeded at losing to the worst defensive team in the NCAA. Run the ball up the middle again coach, that'll work! Yes -- it ended on a controversial play (the Hawai'i DB trapped the ball, but got an INT), but so what. Now -- it will be an interesting week to see how it all plays out. bowls will be working overtime to fill their slots. And schools will be working just as hard to get into the most advantageous games. It could well happen that Akron accepts the first bowl to offer -- sort of like the borderline Div 1-A recruit -- know what I mean? Or if it's particularly cold in Akron this week, they might hold out for a trip to the Paradise of the Pacific. In any case, it's almost certain that what many were afraid wouldn't happen in their lifetimes will occur this week: The University of Akron will accept an invitation to play in college football's postseason. And yes -- the Red Sox DID win the World Series. I will drink to that. Quote
Guest Guest Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Anyone else notice that Virginia opted out of any 12/13-21 bowl due to final exams? http://theacc.collegesports.com/sports/m-f.../112704aab.html Quote

GO ZIPS BOWLING IN 04 - who would have thought this huh????? =>You need Hawaii to lose to Michigan State now to keep Hawaii from becoming bowl eligible. If Hawaii & Tulane lose, Zips are in mathmatically. Quote
