Guest Zipster Jr Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Still can't believe I'm seeing the words "Akron" and "Bowl Game" in the same sentence... I never thought I'd live long enough to see the day... The Projections are all over the place. Hawaii, Silicon Valley, Boise... now this... CFN says Silicon as of 11/30.. vs Fresno State CFN Projections This site says Vegas...Zips vs Wyoming? Zips to Vegas Bowl? and Toledo to Hawaii vs UAB, Miami vs UCONN MCB... and NIU to Silcon Valley VS Troy... ESPN experts... two still have Akron Bowling As of 11/15... to Hawaii vs UAB ESPN Bowl Projections Early lines on Hawaii vs Michigan State is MSU by 6.5 Tulane is giving 29 points to Louisville (game is at Tulane) USA Today Odds Link Beacon Article from 11/30: Zips await word on bowl game Team still practicing, should know soon By David Lee Morgan Jr. Beacon Journal staff writer Drive by Lee Jackson Field on the University of Akron campus today around 4 p.m. and you'll hear whistles blowing and football players pounding on each other on the practice field. ``Isn't the season over for the Zips,'' you might ask. Well, yes. And no, sort of. The Zips, who finished the season 6-5 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference East Division, will be practicing for the next three days while hoping they receive a postseason bowl bid. As of Sunday, there were 56 bowl spots to be filled with 56 bowl-eligible teams, which means if you have a winning, bowl-eligible record you might be in a bowl. Some of the games that have been mentioned for the Zips are the Hawaii Bowl, Houston Bowl, MPC Computers Bowl, Independence Bowl, Fort Worth Bowl and the Silicon Valley Football Classic. The Zips probably will know Monday if they are going to a bowl. ``We're still excited about the possibility (of a bowl game),'' Akron first-year coach J.D. Brookhart said. ``We're going out today, and it'll be nice to get the young guys some work. Obviously, we can't prepare for an opponent, but we'll just be working on timing, and we'll try to fine-tune some things.'' Brookhart had Akron in position to win the East Division title when they played Miami University in their last regular-season game two weeks ago. Miami won 37-27 to claim the division title and a berth in the MAC championship game Dec. 2 against Toledo. Miami and Toledo are guaranteed bowl bids. But there is a possibility that four more MAC teams (Akron, Bowling Green, Marshall and Northern Illinois) could receive bowl invitations because so many teams from other major conferences aren't bowl-eligible. The MAC could have six teams in bowls, the same amount as the Big Ten, the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference. To be bowl-eligible, a team must register six wins during the season against Division I opponents. That's for teams like Akron that played an 11-game schedule. But for teams that played a 12-game schedule, like Northwestern (6-6) and Hawaii (6-5), they must win seven games against Division I opponents. Northwestern is out of the bowl mix because its season is over, but Hawaii still has one game to play. This weekend, Akron fans might want to root for Michigan State and Louisville. Michigan State (5-6) will be playing Hawaii, and Louisville (9-1) will be facing Tulane, which is 5-5, plays an 11-game schedule and needs one more win to become eligible. Confusing? It shouldn't be. Here's the bottom line -- if Hawaii and Tulane lose, the Zips will be bowling for dollars. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Messages for David Lee Morgan Jr. can be left at 330-996-3824 or dlmorgan@thebeaconjournal.com Quote
Guest SEER Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 TRUST ESPN - THEY ARE BOWL PARTNERS WITH THESE GAMES, NOT FOX OR CFN Quote
Guest ***GUEST_Z.I.P. Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Couldn't agree less. These folks are nothing more than "celebrity guessers". While they work at ESPN, they're not involved personally with the bowl committees, and have no inside information. And apparently the guesses aren't updated very well. e.g., Rece Davis has Marshall to the Silicon Valley Bowl after they committed to Fort Worth. Duh! Also, Fresno is out of the SVB and into Boise. The one thing that virtually everyone agrees on is this: Akron cannot get a bowl unless Hawai'i and Tulane lose. There's some possibility of some deal-making among MAC schools, indicated by estimates of Toledo to Hawai'i for example. But that's unlikely, as MT and Co are dreaming of shopping at Ala Moana Shopping Center Hilo Hatties store. Hope to see you on my island in a couple weeks. Quote
Guest Guest Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 At least MSU is serious about preparing for its game with Hawaii: EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State is practicing past midnight and cranking up the heat in its indoor workout facility to get ready for a road trip to Hawaii. http://msuspartans.collegesports.com/sport.../112904aab.html Quote

Guest Guest Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 Time to stop speculating. The MAC has posted a clear description of what's going on with the bowl selection process, and where Akron stands in this process: http://mac-sports.collegesports.com/sports.../120104aaa.html Quote
