Zipsrifle
Though not nearly as many personal best scores were broken this week, the teams scores were still high enough to soundly defeat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. RHIT has been on par with Akron over the past 10 or so years. It shows how much improvement has been made and how extremely deep the current team is to easily take 1 and 2 against Rose Hulman. The Buckeyes are next....keep up the good work! Date: December 4, 2004 Location: The University of Akron Event: Akron –vs- Rose Hulman Institute of Technology Rifle Team Wins Again Milano and Kramer lead the charge This weekend the Zips sharpshooters posted yet another win as they defeated the “Fighting Engineers†of Rose Hulman Institute of Technology from Terre Haute Indiana. In the smallbore division, senior team captain Joe Milano won high match honors and shot a new personal best score of 583 out of a possible 600. Second place individual was earned by Zips Sophomore Laura Kuntz who shattered her personal best with a very impressive 581. And Freshman Stephanie Elmore also fired a new personal best with her 576. Worth noting is the prone performance of Joe Milano and freshman Martha Carpenter who each fired a perfect 200 in the prone position. This will add their names to the list of persons who have tied the school record. “I was very impressed with Milano and Kuntz for breaking into the 580’s, states coach Newt Engle, “But I am also excited about our prone performance. We have been giving away way to many points in prone and seeing the 199’s and 200’s puts us right where we need to be.†With the air rifle, senior Sarah Kramer took first place by posting a 581 out of a possible 600. Second place went to Dan Cloutier of Rose with his 577. Third place was a two way tie between Zips freshmen Shannon Kohatsu and Martha Carpenter who each fired 573’s. “We had a few stellar moments with the air rifle’s but as a team we were actually a little flat,†states coach Engle, “As a team we need to not only get over the 2300 mark, but we need to stay there on a regular basis.†The Zips have now concluded the first half of the season and will start back in action in a scrimmage at OSU on January 8th. This traditional break match was started years ago to give the Ohio based members of both teams a chance to compete during break. The next regular season match will take place when the squad travels to Palmyra Pennsylvania to compete in the Palmyra Invitational on January 16th.
