The Nevada game showed that we need to get more athletic kids, not less. I like Goddard, but who is he going to take minutes away from, Middleton, Dials, or Joyce? I can't see Goddard playing man to man D against any teams #2 guard in the league.

VanDelay's MAC Power Rankings - 02.13.06
zipboy replied to IBleedMACGreen's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Thoughts1. Rick Chryst would give his left nut for an Akron vs Can't finale on Saturday night. The first sellout at the Q for the MAC tourney. 2. I was shocked at how non athletic, weak, and slow BG looked Wed night. Haven't seen CMU yet. I am surprised BG has been competitive as they have been this year.3. Most disparity from top to bottom in the league in a long time.4. EMU needs to win a few for my 500 the rest of the year prediction to hold through.5. Toledo will win the MAC West or at least tie for it. That would make them about the 5th best team in the East this year. Wonder if they would still fire Stan?6. Go MAC this weekend, raise those RPIs.7. UAM, where are the travel packages for March 16-17? Fear the Roo, baby! -

Great point, they have been ducking everyone for a LONG time. Heck, they won't even play in state teams on their home court anymore let alone getting them on a neutral court.

Things going through my head . . .1. Joyce may be one of the 5 smartest players that I have ever seen.2. I like running Dials at the point for parts of the game. Joyce gets some rest at SG and gets more looks. Right now he is a better scorer than Nick.3. Last week was the first one where I did not notice a limp from Dials. Looks to be getting stronger.4. How come the sound guy has a Chris Hahn throwback jersey?5. Interesting that Terry Pluto credits Lee Owens for his recruiting and how he was such a part of the football championship along with JD but yet never mentions Dan Hipsher and gives all credit to Dambrot. You can disagree or agree but I do find it odd his different slants.6. I enjoyed Gaffney's article last week on attendance. I agreed that the ABJ should not be a schill for the U. I look at Livingston's article in the PD this week as one I disagreed a lot with but it caused discussion. I don't expect the Beacon to be a love fest for Akron. But I do expect coverage a Div 1 team deserves. Last week we were playing to stay in 1st place at EMU, a short 3 hour drive. How come Gaffney was not at the game as the Zip beat writer? I also don't blame the Beacon for attendance this year. At this point, it should not matter if they write about us or not. Anyone with a brain should be at the JAR.7. OU in free fall, Can't in OT after a freaking comeback, less than a month until March madness. Fear the Roo!

Jeremy Fears = Johnnie Hollingsworth?

Team flew out today to I assume get acclimated. Good luck to the Wolfpack. Go Zips!

14th out of 60 is about the same as 20th in football with about 120 Div 1 teams. Plus they beat columbus state every year and are ranked ahead of them.

Where did you live when you attended the U?
zipboy replied to InTheZone's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
Kathryn Place, when the night was not complete until you got tear gassed. I was on Franklin Street by the hospital. Ah the memories. -
Sorry Ohio fan, I was sure that I had read it was sibling weekend or Fathers weekend or one of those when reading the postgame story. But I stand corrected. 10K seemed like an unusually large crowd especially since you are drawing around 7 for games like Miami etc. So I assumed that there were some free tickets. But thanks for correcting.

Seems like we get this subject a couple times per year. Everyone has different views. I know that I like our broadcasts a lot more when we win.In football, I like Joe on the sideline. It is a perfect spot. Stamms is great. I wish that Steve saw better. Does he even have a spotter? In basketball, Steve reminds me of Joe Tait. I think he does great. He does let his emotions get to him at times and especially when things turn sour, he does not help my blood pressure. But I know what is going on. Joe Dunn is the biggest Zip fan maybe ever, so I can't say anything bad about him. He has toned down a little with his enthusiasism for the Zips, but he is fine. I loved his Monday night shows and that is where I see him at his best, a call in show talking Zips athletics, post game interviews, etc. But I think as long as he and Steve want to be here, they will and I have no desire to push either one out. I do wish that Tommy G would get a bigger role but don't know where that is going to happen.

I we could add a sport what should it be?
zipboy replied to Ryno aka Menace's topic in General UA & Campus Discussion
I can't see adding another mens sport especially with Title 9. We also need to do well with the sports we have and not get spread too thin. Mike knows what is going on. So if something is cut, my guess would be Mens CC. There are not many mens sports left and right now CC is the lowest performer of the mens sports. -
On #2, I have not heard that and sure hope that it is not true. As far as I am concerned, KD walks on water. I am never surprised if anyone leaves, but he truly has the ability and passion to turn Akron into the next UC. I think he stays the course and becomes a legend in Akron, but who knows. I can be rather naive.

I know we are 7th, but I refuse to consider Can't ahead of us in anything

I feel very passionate about this but a lot has already been said. A few thoughts, I have been tracking MAC attendance during the season. I think attendance for MAC games is a better gague of where a program is. Ball State hosted IU in nonconference play and sold out. We don't get anyone like that at home. That is just an unfair comparison. Also, students are out for much of Dec. Interesing how much higher OUs attedance is during MAC play than not in MAC play. Through Wed, here are teams averages. Akron is 6th.OU 6033 (1 large game of 10K where they gave away tickets for sibling weekend)Buffalo 4595Toledo 4483Ball 4200Can't 3786Miami 3267Akron 3235WMU 3214CMU 2227NIU 2002BG 1877EMU 1312If we sell out Can't and OU and draw 4K for BG which I think we will, we would average over 3800 for MAC play. Putting this in perspective, our all time record for attendance was 4179, the first year of the JAR. Next was 3780 during Huggins last year. Third was 3620 during Hipshers good teams. We had bottomed out to 2400 during the Hipsher era and averaged 3369 last year. We will probably end up over 3500 including non conference games this year, a 1000 improvement from a few years ago. There are about 320 teams in Div1. Last year the 100th best avg attendance was around 5K. Only 1 MAC team, OU even falls into the top 100. From a league perspectiv we are where you expect. From a lets grow the program with KDs vision, we are not. I agree with CK, if we make it to the Q on Mar 11th, there will be 10K Zips fans. I also agree that next year, we take the next leap and probably average around 4500K. But I am surprised that attendance has not jumped more this year. KD is one of the most popular people in Akron, everyone loves him, and he is a winner. I know that we have been crappy in the past, but last year showed that those demons are going away. Maybe it was the football euphoria, but given the jump we saw last year, I really expected the momentum to keep building. This posting is not well thought out but my point is that we have never drawn that well and will actually end up this year probably in the top 5 attendance in Akron history. But that is nowhere where we want to be, need to be or will be. Good times are coming. In 3 years, The JAR will be selling out every night. I really believe that. KD talks about making Akron the next Gonzaga and he will. We have a guy who is one of us, believes in Akron and wants to make Akron a national power. Plus he can coach. Stay the course KD, it will change faster than you think. I am glad that he went off last night. I felt the same way driving home. But I can tell you that I brought 23 people to Can't, and am bringing 19 for the OU game and double digits for Can't. This was the first year where people were actually asking when we were going to Akron to see the Zips. You can't turn it around overnight but it is coming. I just think of all the AK Rowdies after they graduate and start coming back. I can't wait. Go Zips!

Loved him, they should name a building after him someday. MT kicked a$$

I think a buddy of yours was in my Zip crowd at the Can't game Sat. He said to tell you Applebox, and you would know who it was.

50/50 chance that I am going.

Good poll, hard to argue with anything. A few thoughts1. Is Joplin the next Larry Hunter of the MAC? Win 18-20 every year, win a tourney game or 2, maybe make the NIT? I like Stan's demeanor on the sidelines and the way he coaches. I can't see him surviving the season. But beating Can't on Tuesday would be a nice parting gift.2. Starting to get sick seeing Can't at the top of the standings.3. I think that EMU plays 500 ball the 2nd half of the season.4. Miami was not impressive in Akron. How are they only 1 game back of us?5. When I think of OU this year, dysfunctional comes to mind.6. Fear the Roo!

Great posts, I will add just a few things.1. I heard half of KD on the post game. He said that Futch is fine, just got banged up a little. 2. It was good to hear KD put the game in perspective, we want to be playing in the post season. This game does not hurt us from that happening. He did not say this but the Nevada game looms much larger for an at large bid than yesterdays game.3. If we shoot well, we will beat anyone left on the schedule. If we shoot 40% or below, it will be a dogfight with the better teams in the league. 4. Has Linhart hit a wall? Looked like DP was not as mobile yesterday. 5. 37 minutes for Dru, he was sucking wind down the stretch.6. Props to Can't, they stepped up and we tried but could not quite answer back. At this point, I don't know if the 1 or 3 seed is better. The 3 gets the MAC West Champ in the semis. That may be a better match up than a MAC East team.7. Did we get 2 layups the entire game? Need to find a way to get some easy buckets against them.8. Next 3 games we will be heavy favorites. Can't afford a slip up now. 12-2 with 4 to game puts us right where we want to be. No shame in losing on the road to Ohio and Can't in tight ball games. Still hurts that we lost but we will learn from it. I would rather shoot 60% and win in March. Go Zips!

Freaking outstanding!

Speaking of Temple, aren't they supposed to play in every MAC arena over the next 3 years in mens bball due to letting them in for football. I can't recall that happening this past year.

KD talked about this a couple weeks ago. He made a good point. If you play a good team and win it doesn't really help you. If you lose to a good or great team, you are hurt. You need to beat a great team. Let's hope we get the toughest draw. Sure beats the woe is us mentality from the past.
