Wow! 84 ft is ~double (if not more) what the current video board is. The new board will essentially take up the real estate that is currently occupied by 1990s advertisement pieces. Here is the comparison...

    view-of-score-board-from.jpg?w=1200&h=12GP91p3DXwAUDiDY?format=jpg&name=4096x409

This coupled with better sound management (we need to let the band play more instead of obnoxiously blaring music constantly) will be a big boost to the gameday experience.

There is a legitimate financial commitment being made by a select group of donors to Akron Athletics. Very encouraging.

This is great and much needed. I wonder what will happen with the sponsor cards that were on the old scoreboard. That was prime real estate and eyes were drawn there, do they program additional advertising to be displayed on the videoboard? Or do we they sell space on the fences or endzone padding like in baseball? Just trying to understand that sponsorship revenue stream.

  2. Noticed the Z part, but there is also a prominent arrow in the center of the A as well.  I imagine that is tying into the We Rise, Rise Together slogans the University has been using. I felt the balance of the logo was wrong, until I noticed that arrow.

Overall, it's a big ole "meh", but I think it looks better without the border. Except for the treatment Dr. Z gave it with the overlapped Z.

  3. I've been away from Zipsnation for at least 3 seasons.  Firing Bowden really made me question the athletic department and knew Arth would be another Ianello.

This is the first time I have felt optimism in the program since I gave up my season tickets.  I will be looking into options for my family going into this season.

FWIW - George Thomas is reporting it as a done deal.  I would link to the article but we all know how the Beacon Journal is online.

  4. We are up to 5 pages, and the last 3 are a back and forth on if Ohio is a Top 5 recruiting state and if that even matters, and nothing on possible candidates.  I just wanted to come by with a "looks like I was wrong" comment and see what people are hearing.

  5. So, one year removed from a MAC East Championship and a bowl appearance...after a 2016 contract extension, we are somehow going to fire Bowden for under achieving?

Don't see us buying him out of 2019 & 2020

    Base compensation

    2017 guaranteed pay: $406,000

    Total contract pay: $3,630,000

    Contract length: 9 years

    Start date: 12/22/2011

    Last amended: 8/1/2016

    Expires: 2/28/2021

  6. I have an undergraduate and graduate degree, didn't spend a single Friday on campus.  1996 was my first year.  Most every student I knew always found some way to avoid Friday classes.  In fact several 4 credit and lab courses were already scheduled Monday - Thursday, or M-W-Thursday because they know students work, and the prime hours almost everywhere are Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

I didn't know the logos were decals.  I thought they were all separate helmets.  :(.

We have at least 3 base helmets (white, gold, blue) and then they update them with decals for each game.

I think there is a 4th base helmet that is gold metallic, not sure though.  Updating logos gives us a ton of options each week.

  8. There are currently 77 teams that are .500 or better or already bowl eligible.  There are 40 bowl games, so 80 teams are needed.  We are going bowling no matter what.  There are MAC affiliate bowls that are guaranteed to MAC Champ and Runner-up and next two best teams.  We will likely end up in 1 of the 4 MAC Primary bowls, (Bahamas, Potato, Raycom, Dollar General) if we beat Kent.  If we end up in the Dollar General Bowl I know GP1 will be out there smiling somewhere.

What exactly do you like? I agree with your examples and to me it appears that he doesn't really care to win. There are far too many complacent fans that say "oh, Akron has never been good. At least we are almost .500 most of the time. I am happy. Remember how bad we were before he got here? He sure is recruiting a lot of local guys. That is great! Maybe their family and friends will come watch. Heck, maybe next year we can even make the potato chip and dip bowl".

We sound like a high school fan base and a bad one at that. The guy is on cruise control with zero urgency to win. Keener said it best... "does the guy wear a mask when he gets his paycheck?"

I don't think anyone is complacent.  I do think that you seem to gloss over how terrible the team was, and that Bowden has accomplished something.  I also think that he isn't on the hot seat until next year.  Injuries ruined a promising season last year.  Troy is the first game against "similar" competition so far this year and let's not forget that Bowden is the one that set the expectations of competing against better competition with tough losses to Michigan and Tennessee.

But you keep assuming that people are "complacent".

Bowden I believe is the 2nd longest tenured coach in the MAC. Not once in his tenure has the Zips even looked like a semi contender in the MAC. His best season was a tied for 6th place MAC finish. I'm a realist and by all measures his tenure has sucked. Maybe he was away from the game too long and no longer knows how to recruit. Whatever the reason is he has failed the meet the expectations I had when we signed him.

Quite the goal post move there.  Tied for 6th MAC finish?  I suppose having the 6th best MAC record isn't that great, but that also isn't how anything in the conference is determined.  You can finish tied for 5th in the MAC, 1st in the East after tiebreakers and win the MAC Championship and that is all that matters.

Bowden's best season, has also been Akron's best overall record, and only Bowl win, since moving to 1-A, finishing tied for 2nd in the MAC East.  But go ahead and continue with your alternative facts.  Bowden should not be immune in anyway to criticism.  There are questionable decisions, but let's not act like we've had nothing but futility.  We had years of mediocrity, before Bowden, and one of those years ended in a championship.  Bowden has taken us back to that level, and shown signs of moving us past it.  Too bad most of the "fans" would rather clamor for the "good ole days" whatever those were.

How many OSU games is he at standing on the sidelines, wearing jerseys and making statements about how he wants to take one snap as a buckeye?

How many games is he on the sidelines, wearing a zips jersey talking about how he wants to take a snap as a zip?

I can answer... all the damn time for the nuts.... zip for the zips. Stop sucking down the lebron is great for UA football BS.

How many buildings are named after him on OSU's campus, how many students is he sending to OSU on scholarship?

And I have consistently seen him, and his entourage at Zips football and Basketball games.  Hell, the one soccer game I took my son to, he was there.  At least one game each of the last 3 years has been "Lebron James Family Foundation Night" where all the students and families can come for free.

It's a question I ask each year.  What are you, what are any of us, personally doing to bring in crowds and improve the game experience?

I'm sure bitching at the top of your lungs about "Number of Stars don't matter" and being openly hostile to your own team really helps the game experience.

Sitting on your hands when the team needs noise really helps the game experience.  Most of our fans are drunk and belligerent or bumps on a log, that really makes people want to come back.

$60 for a season GA ticket to 15 games.  It isn't getting more reasonable than that.  Also, as much as we'd like to see more people at the JAR, UA is consistently in the top third in MAC attendance.

$60 is pretty reasonable, and fitting of the sub par high school type game experience.  I have done season tickets to basketball, and multi-game passes in the past.  The fact that once you get to the game, you are better off just leaving if you want food or need the restroom is terrible for the whole experience.  Enough so that my wife will no longer go to basketball games because it is a chore to even get to a restroom.  Think about that for a minute.  People feel put out to go to the restroom or get concessions at a basketball game.

There are minor changes that can be made that would improve the current experience, but is it worth it?  People already know the JAR, they know what they are getting.  I don't see minor upgrades changing people's opinion of that dump.

At some point you have to quit blaming coach I for Akron's current performance.

I will still be blaming him 10 years from now, because that is how much he set us back.

You also act like the only injuries we had were to are QB's.  We lost 2 QB's, 2 RB's, 4 DL, and there were intermittent injuries on the O-Line and in our linebacking corp.  At some point, no matter how deep a team is, that starts to take a toll.

There are changes that should be made from an offensive scheme standpoint.  If I see a 1st and 10 bomb, followed up by a 2nd and 10 bomb, followed up by a draw again I'm going to punch the person sitting next to me and blame it on iCoach.

    2012 - 1-11 (0-8)

    2013 - 5-7 (4-4)

    2014 - 5-7 (3-5)

    2015 - 8-5 (5-3)

    2016 - 5-7 (3-5)

After 5 years our best season was finishing 7th in the MAC and we have made only 1 bowl game. IMO we HAVE to win the bare minimum of 7 regular season games or Bowden needs to go, no excuses. He's had plenty of time to filter out coach I's trash. EMU was just in as bad of shape as we were and Creighton has turned them around in 3 years.

Because injuries played zero part in us finishing 5-7 this year.  This was going to be a down year anyway because of how many people we graduated, and everyone still expected 7 wins, in a down year!  If not for injuries we get those two down the stretch.

I also think you forget just how bad those I Coach teams were, and how many people we lost during that time period.  Bowden is not and should not be on any kind of hot seat.

I'm glad you like to entertain yourself.  Maybe if I was 30 years younger, and was embarrassed and looking for redemption because I disputed a report on injuries that ended up being correct, I might decide to act just like you.  But I'm not here to amuse myself.

Like I've said many times here, if some people would use this board as a source of sharing information, instead of a platform for getting their immature kicks from being confrontational, we surely wouldn't have lost most of the people we've lost here.

But please, feel free to carry on.  Have a nice day.

But wait, you gave me permission...

Do whatever you want on here. It's your posts.  Have fun.

And I am not embarrassed nor looking for redemption.  I am very justified in my criticism of your "sharing".

You certainly think very highly of yourself, except you don't post information, you don't share anything.  You share rumors and allude to things.  That doesn't benefit anybody, it doesn't benefit the fan, it doesn't benefit the player.

There is a reason Bowden doesn't talk about injuries, and it doesn't make one bit of difference to worry about your hearsay and speculation; except to go back to our "Whoa is me!" mentality.

...Besides the money, the only thing we gain out of these games is a little attention.  I'll have people comment about our uniforms, our mascot, or that we have a funny name, or that one of our receivers is fast, etc.  But, you're giving way too much credit to these "weeknight football fans" around the country if you think they are in any way knowledgeable about the implications of any of these games.

And don't worry, he has it from an inside source,  ;)

Does throwing for more yards in more games make you a "better" college quarterback, or does winning big games during your college career make you a "better" QB? I wouldn't use yards as my number one criteria in deciding best Akron QB. I would also add Luke Getsy to the debate of best UA QB. I would start with biggest games won, and throw in TD's per game, and mix in some third down conversion rate, and end with some qb efficiency rating if I were to debate. Talent around you should have to be in the discussion as well.

Getsy could be in the conversation, if not for the 2006 season and the volume of endzone interceptions he threw.  He certainly has one of the top moments in program history.
