I want the Akron to get the one seed for the auto NIT bid if they don't win all three in Cleveland. The Zips are more than capable of beating any team in the conference but you never know how a team may react when its do or die or when its three games in three days. Secure at least the NIT then worry about Cleveland.

It looks like the games will be available on Zips Digital Network

Great! I just hope it becomes standard for the games to be viewable throughout the season

I am hoping that a significant number of there games will be available to watch if not able to attend in person

Winning the MAC regular season title still means something. Obviously the goal is to win the tournament and get the NCAAT bid, but having a consolation prize of guaranteeing yourself an NIT bid is a plus. It's not the NCAAT, but it's still a huge step up from the CBI or CIT.
Edit: I doubt we'd even accept a CBI or CIT bid if it came to that as we're such a senior heavy team. If we fail to win the MAC regular season title, odds are it'll be win the MAC tournament or no postseason play.
While I hope it is a totally moot point and the Zips are playing in one of the top two tourneys, I would also hope they continue to play after Cleveland if the only opportunities are below that. I think guys like Ali, Dawson, and Tribble are going to need as much time as they can get.... You are certainly correct in mentioning there are quite a few seniors but these guys haven't been together for four years like traditional senior groups and they should still be getting better. I'd like to see them as long as possible.
Also, Akron has never won multiple national postseason games in the same season in the Zips' Division I era. I would like to see this team be the one that does it... hopefully in the NCAA but if not then somewhere.

So the MAC and other midmajor leagues have struggled with trying to protect their top seeds in a variety of ways. Remember the sort-lived experiment where the top two seeds got automatic placement into the semifinals? So to keep that from happening but also help the top seeds, what about the NFL model of lowest remaining seed plays the highest remaining seed so if the 12 upsets the 5 say then the 4 wouldn't automatically get benefit of the upset. Unfortunately it wouldn't do anything for "home field advantage" but it might protect the higher seeds a little better and would be really easy to pull off since all of those teams would be at the Q anyway.
I think the problem here is that the worst seed to make it to the semifinals could have played in game one of the quarterfinals while the best seed to make it could have been in the late night game. The amount of rest for each team could/would favor the lesser seeded team their semifinal matchup in this case.

That incident at the end of a great moment for the Zips was unfortunate and I believe started due to something totally accidental. That being said we don't have to like our rivals but we don't need to show our dislike for them in an overly disrespectful manner. Its a great rivalry and both sides have taken it too far at times. As an Akron alum, though, I just want to see those supporting my alma mater stay classy even if it is against our most vehement rival.
GO ZIPS!

The Zips did not play well. They got outrebounded astronomically. Most of the team seemed to be off offensively. The Zips lost by 3 points, only three points. I think that shows how good this team can be. I honestly don't think they have played as well the last two weeks as they were playing when the MAC schedule started but are still in the game till the end even when not playing well. At Ohio it always seemed that Groce's teams were just OK in the regular season but hit their stride in March. I hope that happens here.

Yet another game with no television or streaming? Why am I seeing my Zips less this year than in the last few years? I thought we were starting to get toward the point where seeing them, since I do not live local, was getting easier but it is starting to feel like we have gone back to the time when I first moved away from Akron back in 2001.

I'll always prefer the tournaments that provide us the opportunity to play Louisville and WVU type teams on a neutral court.
I agree, that and guaranteed three game tournaments (and not the kind where winning still doesn’t advance you to the semifinals or finals). If we have to settle for a four team two game event with no marquee names, though, this one looks pretty good. Now if it were only being televised or streamed somewhere that didn’t require an additional paid subscription.

Why does this game scare me?
An opponent that already has three road wins, including one against a Big Ten squad, and the Zips coming off a big top 5 test. This feels like a major trap game.

Interestingly, they have had 3 common opponents with the Zips in the young season, beating YSU 78-55, NCC 87-58 and SCU 76-50.
Youngstown State, USC Upstate, NC Central, Louisville, and the Zips have all played each other as part of the Global Sports Shootout. Akron- Louisville is the final game. Each team has played the other four. While this event doesn't use seeding it is easy to see that they expected Akron and Louisville to be the top two teams in the event with Louisville hosting each of their game and the Zips only travelling to play the Cards. Plus, they purposely scheduled the Akron-Louisville game last for the entire event.

So if we compiled a list of players mentioned in this thread as potential future recruits we like what would we have? Would someone close to the program be allowed to share our list with anyone in an official capacity? Just curious. I wonder how many, if any, are on the recruiting staff's radar already?

Was really impressed with WR Nick Kilbride of Perrysburg High School this weekend. He clearly stood out as a very talented receiver with great hands and at 6’3” and 185 pounds he seems to fit the D1 profile for size.. I was told he has MAC schools showing interest. This may very well be a guy that the Zips would benefit from going after if they are not already.

Where have the good old days gone when a major bone of contention was new uniform designs?

Just curious; how did you select the midpoint of next season (as opposed to the end of next season or any other point other than the midpoint of next season) as the time at which the jury should come in?
I probably shouldn't have said midpoint but rather well into next season. That is when I would hope improvement is evident. I just don't always know how easy it is to read the non-conference part of the schedule and you really don't know much about the new year's teams. Certainly not sure how much knowledge we can gain if the Zips go to Clemson and lose 56-3.
its also not all about wins and losses as long as the team seems to be more competitive and improving. My main point, though, was that I don't put a lot of stock in a new coach's first year. there were some who said Bowden would be terrible after his first year at Akron, others said he would be great. I think its safe to say he was neither. I remember how everyone loved Brookhart after leading the Zips to the MAC title in his first year but he was not the springboard everyone envisioned either. Just saying that you can't judge much by a first year. you hope to see a glimpse of the future in year two but can tell a lot more by the time year three comes along.

Last year I was not in the fire Bowden camp but rather in the please replace Milwee camp.
That being said I do think it is difficult to just say a new coach is terrible in year one unless it has to do with behavior and discipline. While I certainly cannot say I am a huge fan of the Arth hire so far I do think, as far as my own opinion is concerned, that the jury is still out and probably will be until the midpoint of next season.
I will continue to support my Zips as always no matter who the coach.

Whoever gives us the best chance of winning should be the one who starts. Back in 2016 Akron was sitting at 5-6 and needed to beat Ohio to gain bowl eligibility. We elected to start a WR at QB instead of Kato because we didn't want to burn his redshirt. Who knows maybe had Kato been our QB we could have won. Three years later and people are talking about benching Kato and honestly I wouldn't be surprised if he transferred this offseason so he wouldn't even be on our roster for his 5th year. You know the year we redshirted for the purpose of keeping him for. With the way the portal is and the way new players are constantly coming in to compete for jobs, I don't see the value in red shirting unless you don't think that player can help you year 1 as you already have better players at the position.
Someone might argue that this season is a lost cause because we're not going bowling. The thing is recruits are still watching these games and if we're able to build any kind of momentum instead rolling over and losing our last 4 games by 20+, that may help to land a few that are on the fence.
I agree with what you are saying but also see the other side of that equation. Since we are not going bowling what better time to see what else we have on the roster in real game action without losing potential years for players? I guess what I am saying is I would want Kato in if available and as long as it is a potentially winnable game. Beyond that I wouldn"t mind seeing what he have in Deshields or any QB that has yet to play. You can only see so much from practice so if there is a chance for game action without hurting their eligibility long term why not go for it?
-
Who would you all like to see start at QB? Is Kato still suspended?
If Kato is able to play I think I would like to see him start. I would not want to burn Gibson's redshirt. I am not sure where he is in game count and there are still three left after this one. Maybe we could see more of what Deshields can do?
BG has been very Jekyll and Hyde this year with more poor performances than good. Hopefully this turns out to be a competitive game.

Dalton Hall, OT, 6'5" 270 lbs., Reynoldsburg HS class of 2021.... looks to be excellent in pass protection, very strong, has played against top high school talent in the Ohio Capital Conference

Any word on how to watch the Zips games in DC if you can't attend in person? Those are the type of games I look forward to.

Saw Nate Williams play for Newark Catholic. Not sure if we are looking at him more for offense or defense. He plays two ways at his small high school. That is one big boy and he moves pretty well for that size as well. One concern may be conditioning as he looked like he got winded at various points through the game and seemed to sit out a few series. Seemed like he took more defensive snaps than offensive ones. I will be looking forward to seeing what he can do once in a D1 strength and conditioning program.

It's always nice to welcome non-MAC teams into the JAR. Especially if their conference is as big or bigger than ours. Yeah, UMass may be bottom feeders in the A10, however, they're still members of a conference whom usually has two or three teams present in the big dance.
They also have some notable basketball alumni such as Marcus Camby and Jules Erving.
They are also a team that defeated the Zips and sent Akron into the offseason in the past, so its nice to get a shot at them at home even though none of the players are probably even aware of the last meeting.

What happened to the coaches vs cancer event that had started the season with the four NEO schools playing each other? I see YSU is on the schedule but not right off the bat.

I agree you need sustained success not only in win-loss record but in national perception. The other thing no one has mentioned is the MAC as a conference. If we could get a couple of years consecutively with more than one team being ranked in the Top 25 I think it would help increase attendance league-wide.
