  1. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story...caa&cc=5901"Akron-TulsaIf it wasn't for the fact that Akron is undefeated, this game might get lost in a weekend of big-name matchups. At 22-0, the top-seeded Zips have yet to give up a goal this postseason. Eighth-seeded Tulsa has quietly powered through to the Elite Eight after squeaking by with an overtime win against Saint Louis in the Golden Hurricanes' opening game. Tulsa definitely has drawn some attention in the tournament, but Akron is the clear favorite." :NCAAC:
  2. We already beat them 1-0 at their home field, and I don't believe they have improved any more than we have. For tomorrow, Tulsa gets the feel of what it might lkke to be named the Zips, not because they'll win but because they'll be getting zip. Zips 2 Tulsa zip, "Aim it like Ampaipitakwong" continues his remarkable run with another goal and we get one from an unexpected source (Chris Korb perhaps). Rowdies go crazy and it's on to Cary to face UNC (I do hope I'm wrong on this last part of the prediction though, I'd rather see Drake).
Retrospectively, I would rather play UNC if we were to win. However, they are an intimidating prospective opponent. I believe we are the best team in the country right now, but on any given day... :NCAAC:B)
  3. I'm going to say 3-0, which is a thorough ass kicking, but for the first time students will have the ability to harass the goalie on both ends of the field.
A thorough harass-kicking indeed! :thumb: Shame on UA if they adopt a final soccer stadium plan that does NOT include harassment zones on BOTH ends of the field. :nono:
I totally agree. That could be the biggest home field advantage in college soccer.
  4. Give me a good, solid 40 minutes of basketball and some worried faces on the Aggies sidelines and I'll be content regardless of the outcome. Give me an upset win and it will make holiday shopping and studying for finals this weekend a whole lot more enjoyable. Gotta show up for all 40 minutes. No disappearing acts in this one if we want to give ourselves any chance.

  5. http://www.collegesoccernews.com/index_files/Page18620.htm"Who do you think will win it all?Joe- I’ve been on the Akron train all year. They may not win, but they are the best team. I’ve seen every team in the Elite Eight. Bob - Wake Forest. I like the team chemistry. Adam - Ha. No way. I don’t want to be someone’s bulletin board material….”See, this guy Zundell says you can’t win! Now go out and prove that idiot wrong!” No onions, I guess. Bryan - Akron. Don’t see how you can pick anyone else. They have taken care of business all year.Matt - North Carolina. The Tar Heels will be playing it right in their back yard. " :NCAAC::rock:
  6. Nice list and a good way to close out the JDB era by remembering some of the best moments. I think our first bowl game against Memphis belongs in the list too. Heck of a game even in a loss and the fact that we finally got to one deserves a ranking somewhere in that top ten.
Agreed. The team never quit trying to win that game against Memphis either. We were in it until the final play. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.Great list. Thank you JD and best of luck to you, your family, and the other coaches.
  7. I can't even figure out what she is saying here...."The first two rounds of the NCAA tournament weren't exactly marked by a rash of upsets -- eight seeded teams remain and no team seeded worse than 10th advanced, so none of the opening results were jaw-dropping."What does she mean no team seeded worse than 10th advanced? Drake is unseeded, Stanford is unseeded, Indiana is unseeded, Duke is unseeded, UCSB is unseeded, and Portland is unseeded. They are all by definition worse than the 10 seed. This woman is absolutely clueless.
How many sports articles have you read in your time? There is almost always a sense of catering to the hopes of both sides in any article written before a game or match, even if it demonstrates a disconnect with reality. This is just how they do it. ESPN isn't in the business of slamming Stanford. The article is a mere hype piece. It is to be expected.
    Then consider me hyped! :NCAAC:
  8. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story...caa&cc=5901Stanford vs. No. 1 AkronThe Zips shut out South Florida 2-0 to easily advance in their quest for a national championship. Now a perfect 21-0, Akron is focused on continuing its march toward solidifying its place in college soccer history. Stanford (12-5-2) has turned around its program at almost warp speed. A year ago, the Cardinal went 4-11-3. Now they're in the Sweet Sixteen. Common sense dictates that Stanford's season ends here, but logic doesn't dictate game outcomes. "...logic doesn't dictate game outcomes..."...but the AK-Rowdies do. That Stanford goalie has never experienced anything like this. Best home field advantage in college soccer plus cold weather.Zips 3-0!
  9. Thanks to Hilltopper for providing myself and parents with tickets to today's game. Was in from out of town and wanted to see the Info as much as anything. I was really impressed with it and the changes on campus.A few random notes:The band is awesome!Nicely and Wagner are very impressive.Nicely has room to learn (e.g. sliding on the run on third and long that resulted in a fumble and the first interception). This will come with time and (hopefully) good coaching. The play calling on offense is extremely simple and predictable as pointed out by my mother. If the 3-3-5 only slows EMU down, it will never be good enough to win the MAC.Saw Coach Porter with his wife and infant. Very impressed by the overall support among the Athletic Department especially considering the opposite ends of the spectrum. Very classy on Coach Porter's part. I hope he stays after this season.JD can go. While a hardworking gentleman, the facilities investment requires that the team win and fill the stadium. Today's attendance was the only proof necessary that JD has not earned the right to return. It is time for a change, and I wish him the best.I think an Annual Black Friday game could be well attended if both teams were competitive. The MEN's restroom was crowded at halftime in spite of the <2,000 fans. Was this a problem earlier in the season with the large crowds?Good to see that Can't lost today. :screwks: Can't wait until Sunday for the soccer game against Stanford!

  10. Damn! Impressive. If we had a 50-50 home-away schedule with opponents like that there might actually be large scale community interest in Zips basketball before conference play begins. That's what it takes to sellout the JAR and require a new arena. No one wants to come watch the Zips lose their first game to Austin Peay, but Georgia Tech (win or lose) might be another story. I could see a sellout for a game like that...especially after coming off a Tournament appearance and having a top 50 recruit.
huh? they play them on the road. in fact, their first home game is 1/16. I'd rather see Akron play Austin Peay at home than nobody. Do you really thing GT would come to Akron? There is no upside to playing us at home, for any big team like that. Just nothing to gain..
I was simply saying this is necessary to build a program and a fan base. Losing to Austin Peay at home early in the season is counterproductive in this sense.

  12. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story...caa&cc=5901"There's no question the Zips are the team to beat. However, despite the Zips' 20-0 record this season, there are still those who have reservations about Akron because of its Mid-American Conference background. A team doesn't go undefeated and receive the tournament's No. 1 seed based on luck and a weak schedule. The Zips are the real deal, but favorites have fallen in the NCAA tournament. Everyone will be gunning for this team, and it's up to coach Caleb Porter's squad to answer the skeptical once and for all. If not, it will be an even longer winter in Ohio."
  13. http://www.collegesoccernews.com/index_files/Page560.htmStetson (14-3-2) vs. South Florida (13-3-3) - These two teams faced each other in a preseason match with South Florida prevailing 3-0 but the game was much closer than the score indicated. The fact that Stetson has fourteen wins means that they are a team to be taken seriously but South Florida’s quickness and the solid play of goalkeeper Jeff Attinella should enable the Bulls to advance. The bad news is that the winner of this one must travel to face an Akron team that is 20-0-0 and still hungry. :rock:http://www.collegesoccernews.com/index_files/Page467.htm#1 Akron Bracket: (Love how that reads! ) First Round – Stetson (14-3-2) at South Florida (13-3-3)
 Second round – Winner at #1 Akron (20-0-0)First Round - St. Mary’s (10-4-5) at Stanford (10-5-2)
Second round – Winner at #16 UC Irvine (15-6-0)First round – Green Bay (14-2-3) at Notre Dame (10-7-4)
Second round – Winner at #9 Northwestern (10-4-4)First round – Missouri State (12-4-2) at Saint Louis (14-6-0)
Second round – Winner at #8 Tulsa (13-4-2)
  14. I like how the bracket sets up for us...revenge potential against USF and Northwestern and the idea of a big name west coast PAC-10 school like Stanford coming to Akron is awesome! If making the Final Four, any game we get will be tough, but I'd prefer to play OSU again over UNC. However, IF we get UNC and manage to beat them in their own back yard and go on to win the National Championship, this team may be able to claim it is the best of the modern era in D-I and potentially of all time! Here's to revenge and an exciting run at the National Championship!:NCAAC: (Someone with more time and computer talent than myself needs to make an emoticon similar to the one above that simply says, "Go Zips!")

  15. I thought about writing her an email regarding the fact that we weren't one of her top ten favorites to win the national championship this year.http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story...caa&cc=5901

I gave her credit for a nice article all of the way up until this line:The 64 NCAA tournament teams will be announced on Monday (5:30 p.m. ET, ESPNEWS).The men's side has only 48 teams (the women's tournament has 64 teams - that disparity has always seemed odd to me).
  16. This interesting piece of trivia appears on Gozips.com: "Akron, which leads Michigan State 22-10-1 in an all-time series dating back to the 1962 campaign, is undefeated in its last 22 matches (21 wins and one tie) with the Spartans." Suffice it to say, that while the series started in MSU's favor (like winning 10 of the first 11), we now OWN the team from East Lansing.2-0 sounds good to me. Let's keep that string of clean sheets going.
+1 :NCAAC: :champs:The Rowdies will own Sparty!http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-soccer.../110309aaa.html"We're going in with the mentality that we have nothing to lose," said junior Colin Givens. "We are going to go at them and maybe play a little more risky than we ordinarily would. We're excited."The 16-0 Zips have outscored their opponents by a count of 45-3 this season and are 4-0 against the Big Ten, defeating Indiana, Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State.
