  1. Hello Zipsnationers (Zipsnationettes? Zipsnationists? Zipsnationalists? Zipsnationistas?).The 8-page Buchtelite men's basketball preview hits our stands Nov. 9 (next Thursday). If you are unable to grab one on campus and want a copy, PM me your name and address and I'll have one sent out to you (absolutely free! and maybe I can have Mikey Rasor autograph it!). The section will include:-a special Rasor's Edge column-5 things to watch for this season-Zips team breakdown-a cover story on Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce-a feature on Jeremiah Wood-a breakdown of the MAC-fantastic/radical/tubular/cowabunga-worthy cover-loads of fresh art being shot on Sunday-possibly something else if we can shoe horn it in-$100 bill (OK, this part is not true)If you would like a copy, I'll try my best to get them out next Friday. If you would also like a copy of our women's basketball preview which is running Nov. 14, let me know and I'll send that out with the men's preview.

  2. It's actually semi-thrilling to see Akron in the top 25. Dorky, I know.
Not to change the subject...but how bad will it suck to see K.e.n.t football in the "Others receiving votes" sections of some polls in a week or two? :puke:
That would be a disgusting thing. If anyone is interested, below is what Akron's top-25 write-up says in the Sportsline magazine. The real team preview is a little longer. -------------------------------#20 Akron ZipsWhen you boast the preseason conference Player of the Year and two players on the preseason first-team All-MAC squad, it should come as no surprise that you are ranked among the top-20 teams in the country. That's where the Zips find themselves, thanks in large part to the return of seniors Romeo Travis and Dru Joyce. Travis, our pick for MAC Player of the Year, is the team's leading scorer and rebounder and is quite effective around the basket despite being listed as 6-foot-7. Joyce runs the offense from his point-guard position and can both distribute and find his own shot if necessary.l Akron posted a 23-10 record a season ago and returns four of five starters, so clinching the automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament is a realistic goal. And that may be the only way the Zips can ensure an invitation to the Big Dance since it's hard to envision the conference obtaining an at-large bid, but stranger things have happened.-------------------------------The magazine picks two MAC teams, Akron and Ohio, to make it to the NCAA Tournament. Ohio is given a 13 seed versus Nevada, Akron a 12 seed against Xavier. Both lose in the first round. (but I think Akron could take Xavier. The Zips match up pretty well against Xavier size-wise. Of course the Musketeers are a little bigger, but don't have player taller than 6-foot-9. They do have an excellent point guard in Oklahoma transfer Drew Lavender, but Joyce and Cedrick Middleton could keep up with him.)Sportsline ranks the top 64 teams and it includes Akron (20), and Can't State (61) from the MAC.
  3. I'm not concerned with who the beginning of the season home games. The three-game swing on the road against Niagara, Oral Roberts and Binghamton worry me a little. Binghamton is better than people think and Niagara and Oral Roberts are both pretty good. I'll be thrilled if the Zips go 2-1 in those three games.

  4. This just made it onto ESPN's Cold Pizza. Len Robbins was doing a recap, no new information we don't have, but he mentioned how the NC State cheerleaders were asking where "Akrone" was. Len had a good laugh. Tool-ish host had a good laugh. Then Len goes to finish the Akron segment and calls Brookhart Brookright. Ooofa. Also, screw Chest Amato.

  5. Here are a couple thoughts:1. Driving alone to Penn State blows.2. Tailgating with Penn State fans does not blow.3. Standing a few feet away from Joe Paterno as he praises the Zips and JD Brookhart also does not blow.4. Getting kind of lost, but not really, on the way home from Penn State blows. Especially when it's raining the entire time.

  6. How about an article about why BG and Toledo have been able to schedule games in UA's backyard-- why isn't UA doing that, how did UA miss that opportunity?
That is something I'm touching on in an upcoming story. Mack Rhoades explained it to me, but I honestly can't remember off the top of my head what exactly he said. As for getting in touch with older Zips, particularly that team from thte 1960s, if we can get in contact with enough of them, it is something on my mind.Dig this, the Buchtelite is going to have a staffer at every road football game. She goes with her mother. Our Web site is going to have her running diary of her trips up hopefully every Tuesday morning after the game. I'm super-excited for this.
