  1. I'd be all for Abreu returning - if he did so as a walk-on. Playing his final year as a non-scholarship player would show me he truly wants to make good on his past mistakes.

He'd have to move a lot of weed to afford that.

I do agree though. Though AA took it to the next level I'm sure that many of us did some really stupid things when we were his age.

  2. Wouldn't the #4 spot force us to play Toledo in the Semifinal, according to your scenario? I wouldn't think that's the best path to play on Saturday.

brain cramp on my part..... too many adult beverages consumed. OK, I just dialed up the hoop Gods and declined the four spot. :P I'll take a 3 instead.

And MD brought up a very important fact..... yes, OU drew the short end of the stick for sure.

  3. As far as the MAC tournament seeding is concerned, we're tied for the best record in the MAC right now, and still have one big factor in our favor right now: A road win over OU.

So today, right now, I don't see why we'd want to settle for a 4 seed. As poorly as we all think that we are playing we're still keeping pace with everyone else at the top of the standings, and I pray that we continue to do enough to keep it that way. There's still likely plenty of losses to be had this year for every team that stands with us at a 3-1 mark.

I probably shouldn't have put that sentence in there because I really wanted to get the subject of 20 wins debated. But since you brought it up...

I understand your points and yes, it is very early but at this point I think that Toledo and Eastern are locks for two of the top 3 spots. After all, there are some serious benefits to playing CMU, Ball and NIU twice. So if one accepts that this is probable. We have the following teams likely going the remaining two of the top four spots. Akron, Ohio, Buffalo, Can't and Western. Of those, I think that Can't and Western appear to be the weakest at this point. Frankly, I think our guards are the worse of the lot and without solid guard play I don't think we are good enough to get the 2 seed. I said 4 seed for a reason. I think it's safe to say that on a neutral floor that nobody wants an early match with Toledo and they certainly look to be the likely #1 seed at this point. The 4 seed is the spot that might well get us through to Saturday.

Though it's tough for any of to swallow, the realist in me sees the 4 spot as our most attainable and attractive option.

Maybe we can dig this thread up later to prove me wrong. Hope so.

  4. I believe that we will but I wouldn't put money on it. I went through the remaining schedule and it will not be easy by any stretch. We still have E Mich twice and they have the ability to win here. You have to shoot over the top to beat them and we have not demonstrated any type of consistent shooting. I think that it's a given that we'll have to scratch and claw to win any of the roadies with maybe an exception at C Mich . It may well come down to the MAC tourney and right now if somebody offered me a 4 seed I would say thank you very much, I'll take it. It is what it is.

We are in very select company when it comes down to consecutive 20+ win seasons. I'd hate to see it end this year.

  5. Is there still a place on the east side of Akron called Duffy's? The used to serve breakfast and have a full bar.

You are good to go at Duffys. Nothing quite like like getting all boozed up and abusing the officials for a great time at the gym (or so I am told)

  6. The Zips advantage in the MAC seems to be - "They know how to win, and expect to win."

The other suddenly-competitive MAC programs have improved talent, but are still trying to figure out how to consistently win. I wonder which of them will mimic the Zips football team and ascend from preseason laughingstock, to contender at mid-season?

Though they have been emerged in a slow, steady progression for awhile now, I would guess that EMU most closely resembles that team. They play a killer zone and have some athletes who are long and defend very well. To beat these guys you need some shooters to hit jump shots over the top. Just ask Steve Hawkins after Western was slaughtered last night.

  7. We need to get this discussion back above the Toledo game. before the season started this would not have been on my list of worry games, but the way the RedHawks have been playing, the return of a very good player for them and coming right between Ohio and Toledo is a concern. I'm not ready to call it as a loss but I will bet it wll be a very tight game. Good thing it is at home. Zips by 5, 67-62.

    Bumpity.. bump.. bump

  8. I'll say this...

When I first saw him 2 years ago at the JAR, I thought he totally had that WOW factor. In just one viewing of his performance, I thought I was seeing the most gifted guard in the MAC, and he was only a sophomore. I'll be curious to see where he's at two years later. I just hope he doesn't WOW me this time.

A couple of years ago he was pretty much a one trick pony for the Rockets and could drop 30 pts on any given night. Now he is surrounded with four other guys that can put the ball in the hole. I've seen the Rockets play four times this year and he doesn't always seem to look to score like he did back then. I'm very impressed with their center Boothe. He's got strength inside and can also step out and hit the jumper. Drummond and Weatherspoon also have great offensive skills. I've never been a fan of Juice Brown but on occasion he can beat you as well. On top of that the Rockets do have some depth off the bench.

Obviously, the Rockets can't defend very well but they can easily outscore their defensive liabilities against most teams. It will take a very crisp and clean offensive game, meaning LOW TURNOVERS, to beat them.

However, lets take care of the sweaters first.

  9. I'm no expert when it comes to the D league but from my limited viewing I can appreciate the above assessments of D league play. The league seems very guard oriented to me. It's often one pass or no passes at all then throw something up there in an attempt pad those stats. I suppose it makes some sense in that the vast majority big guys with legit skills are already on a roster in the association and learning at the highest level.

All in all, I'll gladly take in a good MAC or Horizon league affair before watching any professional game at any level. Back in the day as a player I couldn't guard a kids piggy bank, but I now have an appreciation for good defense and the coaching strategies found in the college game that you don't see at the professional level. When you add in the rivalries and spirit of the college game, to me no other level basketball is as enjoyable.

I agree with the guy that said he just wants to see Zeke be happy be it in basketball or any other profession. He's a good kid from a good family and I wish nothing but the best for him.

  10. It would be a huge mistake to overlook and discount the Redskins. Especially so considering that this fits the literal definition of the sandwich or trap game in that it is squeezed in between arguably our two biggest conference games of the season. Miami is not void of talent and I feel that they have made some progress. Their guards are not bad at all and in fact they probably have an edge in the back court. In the spirit of Charlie Coles I fully expect this game to be a tight struggle throughout.

  11. While we don't share the kitten fans obsession with us, we probably should start up a thread and discuss the game.

As some of you may know Ricardo Johnson suffered a nasty broken leg injury a couple games back and is lost for the season. It's a significant loss for them. He's a 6'5" swing player (G-F) who could score and hit the glass pretty well. He ate up a lot of minutes and his loss gets the kittens deeper into their bench. Their cupboard is not bare though. Ndour is really tough inside and was a great find for them. I have always liked their PG, Stevie Taylor who had to play behind DJ Cooper for the last three years. I'd like to have him here.

I think we need to get the ball inside at every opportunity and try to exploit our size advantage. It's our best chance to win, especially now as bad as we've been stroking it from beyond the arc. We need to up our game for this one as the Kittens will look to go to 2-0 vs the east after their win at K e n t this week.

IMO the keys to victory are :

Take care of the ball, keep the TOs to a minimum

Work it inside to Pat, Tree and Big Dog.

Hit the glass hard... we made Majok look like a superstar in Muncie.

Keep a body on Ndour. He's a smart player who can beat a team in multiple ways.

    There... sounds easy doesn't it??
