Now I'm bummed. See we should have beat the Bucnuts by 33, not lost by 46.
-
Outrebounded by 7, outscored at the free throw line by 18, win by 12. Makes perfect sense.
-
I noticed the terrible 3-point shooting performance put on by the Zips. There aren't many times a team is going to win shooting 28.6% from distance. It was painful to watch. So then I watched Nebraska host 15th ranked UCLA. Oh My. Nebraska hit 7 of 25 3s for 28% and WON!! How did that happen? Well it helped that the Bruins made 4 of 28 3s 14.3%. It's a wonder someone in the stands was not injured with all the basketballs flying aimlessly around the arena.

At the beginning of every basketball season I see a few names of obscure colleges scrolling across the ESPN ticker that I've never heard of. I've created this thread so everyone can add their list of oddball NAIA and D-3 "finds".
Never heard of William Carey University (Southern Miss's first opponent). Drew's brother?
Brescia plays at Jax State tonight.
Hey Capt - Bet your looking forward to tonights Misericordia vs Delaware game as well as the Ecclesia vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff game. Both should be real barnburners.

This just sucks. I realize you can rebuild like current champion OU did when they lost 9 of 11 offensive starters and I hope Joe does. But this is Akron. Our All MAC's will continue to leave until we can establish a winning culture. Even then, with the shifting sands of college football, we may not be able to sustain a program w/o more support for the players.
Nemer has to make a statement and back it up. It is a total shame we don't have a training table, let alone a winning program or attractive culture. A D1 competitive football program is worth the investment. It is part of the remedy for restoring the enrollment. Look at Liberty's enrollment after football took off. Same for Coastal Carolina.
Think I'm done caring about Zips football. I don't see the Zips crawling out of the hole they are currently in. I think at the time they beat Toledo they were about halfway out, but now they have slide back to the very bottom.

FWIW ... (12/2/24).
1st NCAA NET was released today and the MAC does not look very good at all.
95 Kent
113 CMU
146 Miami
151 Akron
179 Ohio
197 Toledo
The rest of the league is below 200 with UB, Ball St. and NIU under 300. Note the 100 pt difference between No. 1 MAC and No. 6 MAC. Just bad. I believe Akron is way better than 151, but I understand why the Zips sit where they do. Upcoming games should change that significantly.
As for the rest of the MAC, other than CMU, I really can't see any other team rising much above their current spot, with the possible exception of Toledo. But losing their last two games by 30-40 points to mid-majors does not look like upward movement for the Rockets.
Last few years Ohio has started slow and come on late, so perhaps there is hope there as well. With the league so bad, perhaps Miami's youthful talent will help them move up a few notches.
But what in the world is wrong with Ball State???
Not a betting man, but based on current results on paper, and the eye test, CMU looks like the team to beat. We'll know more about Akron in a couple of weeks.
Watched WMU play at Dayton. Think they might surprise some folks. They looked pretty good; even led by 3 at the half.

I saw Indian School got pounded by a named program a week or so ago (can’t remember who). It was 48-4 when it came across the ticker.
The Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, where Jim Thorp played football under coach Pop Warner has not been the same since they both left. I believe Thorp also played basketball for them. I know he played professional basketball for at least two years during his career.

The intent is to double the revenue from P4 OOC games and pay off the stadium debt.
Week #1 is -
Akron Gold vs. Penn State ($1.9 million)
Akron Blue vs. Florida ($1.78 million)
Week 2 is a west coast trip. USC and Oregon are the rumored opponents. $4.1 million in total revenue.
More details to follow. Dr. J is also in negotiations with Kent to loan players in the event too many Zips get injured in the first couple weeks. Lots of outside the box thinking going on from the interim AD.
I can't believe you didn't mention the Zips 2 for 1 and $500k contracts coming up with Alabama and LSU.

The Zips get 9 days off before the Norse of Northern Kentucky come to the JAR on December 3rd. The Norse currently stand at 1-4 but have games against Bellarmine and College of Charleston before they head to Akron. The Norse record is deceiving as their 3 of their 4 losses are to Purdue, Cincinnati and Florida State.
The Norse were predicted to finish 3rd in the Horizon League in the pre-season poll. 6'7" graduate student guard Trey Robinson and 6'5" senior guard Sam Vinson were naked to the Horizon pre-season first team. This far, 6'4 grad student Josh Dilling leads the Norse in scoring at 12 ppg. Vinson is scoring 10 ppg while Robinson, who was the Horizon DPOY last year, scores * per game while leading the team in rebounding at 6.8 rpg.
I watched NKU beat Bellarmine. They were not real impressive. I'd make them at least a 9 point dog to the Zips. Exercise caution taking the kids to this game just in case Robinson and Vinson try that naked thing again.

I don't know how I screwed that date up.
The other two future NFL players on the Tampa roster were Freddie Soloman at QB and Leon McQuay at RB. Solomon went on to a very successful career with Miami and San Francisco. After playing for Toronto in the CFL, Mcquay had an OK short career in the NFL with the Giants, New England, and New Orleans. Leon went to that big football field in the sky in 1995 and Freddie joined him 12 years ago.
P.S. Did you know that when you got 40,000 fans to watch a football game at the Rubber Bowl you could not see a trace of the steps anywhere in the stadium?
-
1974 against highly favored U of Tampa. Tampa featured two future NFL players. They received the opening kickoff and screwed up the return. Shortly thereafter they fumbled on the 4 yard line and Akron quickly scored the first 7 of the points that ended up in a 40 -0 victory. Tampa dropped football after that season.

I mean, I'm the debby-downer who thinks the U would be better served getting rid of the football program instead of keeping it, and even I can acknowledge that 4-8 is better than 2-10, 1-11, 0-12. It's a step in the right direction.
The days of firing a coach after a down season for a school like Akron should be over. The U has bigger problems than Football (27m deficit) and we cannot afford to keep firing coaches to to try to be "competitive" in a sport that it's literally impossible in 2024 to be competitive in.
If the Zips are 6-6 next year, yes, that would be improvement. Hell, returning to the Biden Floor of 5-7 would be an improvement.
What is a Biden Floor?

after our game with the golden flashes I'm ready with my w/l prediction for next year.
8 - 4 with Norton
6 - 6 without him
it would help if we replaced a couple of teams already on the schedule with two games against new mexico state.
whats your o/u on the amount of nil money a halfway decent team will have to offer Norton in order to get him?

One vote to maintain the skinny A because it best signifies the situation at Akron. Put some pressure on it and see how easily it breaks.
-
Given the recent history of the Zips sports programs, I'm going to be suspicious of anyone who takes on the AD position at Akron.

Agree to disagree.
Why a full 20 minutes?
In my opinion, the teams had the opportunity to settle the scoreless tie that starts the game, and that opportunity was the full 90. Sudden death is an attempt to decide the game on the merits of field play rather than having to resort to penalty kicks. Like fknbuflobo said, I also appreciate the potential for injuries when additional time is added, which is another reason I think extra time should be limited to sudden death.
Anyone have access to stats which show more injuries occur per minute of OT vs per minute of. regulation time? .My guess is it doesn't happen.

My nomination for this game's "Whowoodathunkit" award goes to Ben Finley with 15 positive rushing yards.

I feel the approach isn't that great and a bit tone deaf. I don't have any hard numbers, but I imagine for schools like Alabama or Ohio State, that somewhere around 80% of their NIL comes from the top 10% of donors.
The numbers in your imagination seem vaguely familiar.
