VCU at Akron on December 29th, 2011
Districtballer replied to Districtballer's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
If you would like to see VCU before their 'beat down' by the Zips one more time, we're playing online on ESPN3 against UNC Greensboro tonight at 7. Darn it, DistrictBaller, don't you know we just hired a new football coach? We are very distracted, we can only focus on one thing at a time. Congrats and sorry to distract you, but you'll just have to deal with it. -

Abreu looked pretty good walking around for a guy who had knee surgery yesterday. During the post game show KD said he didn't expect Rico back for the VCU game. I hope he's wrong. Based on what you said, with 10 days to recover and his current condition, KD is probably just sand-bagging. I expect Abreu will be on the floor or at least get in the game to see how he feels. It seems like from what I read that he's determined to play in the VCU game. I hope he gets his wish. He seems like a very good point guard and it will be great prep for our conference season to go against a guy of his caliber. I don't know why KD made Abreu wait so long to have the surgery. The only thing I can figure is that KD felt we might need him to beat YSU? I doubt that, but what else could it be? Anyway, we are a different team without Alex. With Alex, we can be awfully good. Without Alex, meh. Frankly, w/o AA we can be just awful. Even if AA is good to go for VCU, he's not going to be his usual self. Which is disappointing for everyone. I think you're selling your squad a little short. Without AA you just beat NC A&T by 27 points and only had 9 turnovers. Your squad is much better than you think.

Sorry saw that Abreu had his surgery yesterday and will try to make a go of it for our game. Happy to see we'll get to test ourselves against your full squad. You guys have certainly beat your opponents convincingly and it should be a very tough game for us especially with Abreu back and having had his surgery. Will be interesting to see how we stack up to the talent and athleticism up in Akron.

I saw that Abreu didn't play...did he already have his knee surgery? Nice win for the Zips! We play the other team from Greensboro, North Carolina tomorrow (UNC Greensboro) at the Greensboro Coliseum (where the ACC tournament is played) on ESPN3. After that it's VCU-Akron time!
-
This is patently false. VCU are a bunch of bums. Don't worry about us.

VCU had a school-record 20 steals (also the most in any game between D1 teams in the country this season) and forced 28 turnovers last night in a 87-64 win over UNCW. We outscored the Seahawks 41-4 in points off of turnovers. Here are some video highlights of the game, our defense and athleticism was on good display here: VCURamNation: http://www.vcuramnation.com/2011/12/video-...-havoc-on-uncw/ (scroll down to view the video player) RamsReview: http://ramsreview.com/2011/12/16/mens-basketball-vs-uncw/ VCUAthletics:

That's a tough break for the VCU and Marshall games then. I would have liked to face a full and healthy Zips squad, but I'm sure we'll have our hands full at your place regardless. I have to admit I do like our chances a little bit better with him not handling the ball. You guys are little bit of an enigma from what I've seen. You have some very good talent for a mid-major school and flashes of downright impressive athleticism and ability from some of your guys. There are also just awful stretches where you guys look like you're still trying to figure it out, and that's normal at this point of the early season. I think this team could be pretty scary for a lot of teams in the MAC come March and I like the movement KD's making towards athletic guys who play ball as opposed to just basketball players. You can see that they are green in some places, but the long-term potential is much higher for this group than any other Akron squad I've seen since we've played each other. The Hip Zip...the all-time record is actually 5-0 in favor of VCU as we played a home-home series during the 1969 and 1970 seasons in addition to this bracketbuster stretch. I was hoping for something similar to our last game against each other to close it out, but somehow I think the game will be a lot tougher to win for us this time around. Darius Theus (#10) did some pretty impressive things that game as a freshman, and he'll have to be very good for us to have a chance against you guys this time around.

Zips Ranking in Mid-Major Top 25
Districtballer replied to Dave in Green's topic in Akron Zips Basketball
Akron has 1 vote in this week's poll: http://collegeinsider.com/mmpoll/ -
Well I guess we were both wrong. Arizona is blowing out Detroit at the half 38-22. Holman is doing his part for Detroit with 7 points, 5 boards and a block though. Never heard a final on that one. How did Arizona do? Ugh. I didn't even see that until now. Well done. 'Arizona' ended up winning by like 8 and went 1-11 from 3 but controlled the game from the tip to the final horn.
-
Yeah I was aware of that...just teasing him about Hipsher being the reason that Bama was shooting the 3 so bad since he was inferring Hipsher was responsible for Bama's success.
-
You talking about the 3-point woes?
-
Haha and that's all that counts. Mitchell had a nasty reverse jam for Bama...if they can somehow figure out how to shoot the 3, that will be a scary team. Tough to watch Grant build up that team after watching him coach at VCU, but he's a heckuva coach. No arguing that.
-
LOL I definitely don't. I just like to play along. I think Akron gets a couple of points with it being at home. I'd say Akron -2 or -3. If Abreu's not playing that obviously changes but I really couldn't tell you how much. I don't see it helping you any for sure. We really pressure the ball. Like a ton.

If KD doesn't get AA's surgery done asap so he can recover during the Florida A&M, YSU & North Carolina A&T games (when we shouldn't need him) in order to be up to speed for the VCU & Marshall tilts (in which we'll desperately need him), I'd be tempted to say that KD's going for 3 easy wins -vs- the former 3 while looking for a built-in excuse -vs- the latter two. Tempted, mind you. Not saying he is, necessarily. But I'd be tempted... I doubt that's correct, according to what GoZips mentioned earlier, Shaka is afraid to play Akron and tried to beg out of playing the game. It does seem rather fishy to wait 4 games (which you all should easily win with our without Abreu) only to do surgery right before the 2 remaining tough games on the OOC schedule that are right in front of the MAC schedule opening up. Common sense dictates exactly the opposite of what KD proposed in the pregame show. I'm sure there is an unknown purpose and clearly the Zips have enough raw talent to beat us at the JAR with or without Abreu. It's just somewhat baffling.
-
Very cogent argument. I would hope we get to face Abreu. Obviously we want to face you at your best to prepare for the conference season.
-
I agree with that. It would seem this is the easy stretch you'd want him to sit out since it's likely you win these 4 games comfortably anyway. VCU and Marshall are your two remaining up games and it would seem foolish not to have your point guard for those contests unless KD is completely writing off the OOC and focusing on winning the MAC tournament. Either way, it still seems better to have Alex get the surgery done ASAP so that he can get healthy for the MAC season and hopefully the big VCU and Marshall contests.
-
In that case Abreu won't be playing in the VCU game. I find that hard to imagine KD being okay with since Abreu is the primary ball-handler and we are a full-court pressure team. That's a tough break if true.
-
Me neither. Holman is very good and Alabama has shown they are not as impressive as initially thought. Dayton beat them pretty handily I believe.

Wow Jeremy Montgomery with a back-breaker of a 3.
