URI fan here. Despite the outcome of yesterday's contest, I do believe that Akron has a very good basketball team. The Zips just had a bad game against a team that it did not match -up well against. On another day or venue, this game would have been much closer, although I believe URI's athleticism and height would make them prevail more often than not. You have speedy guards who had an off day shooting and while Rhody put on some good defense, the truth is Akron had good looks at the basket all game.I must, however, reply to GoZips comments on Baron. I understand that you are a loyal Akron fan and was upset with the development of that game. I understand your need for catharsis, but to call out Coach Baron as having no class was both disrespectful and not true. URI has gotten a reputation lately for blowing big leads late in game. In the A-10, only recently we saw St. Joe's lose an 18 point lead in the second half in a home loss to Siena. Akron was behind by 17 points at the 6 + minute mark when Baron hit his 3 pointer. That Baron hit two other 3 pointers later was not an example of piling on, but the frustration of Jimmy finally getting free to take such shots. Akron's defense of Jimmy was that good. Finally, when you make a comment, you have to make sure your house is not made of glass. Because both Roberts and Hitchens put up three pointers late in the game with a lead of 17 points in your blowout game against UNC-Greensboro. Similar things happened in Akron's 44 point margin romp over Fairleigh Dickinson. It's one thing for students to taunt the opposing team. They're just young vigorous people lacking life's experiences. It's quite another thing for a 65 year old person to yell out a disrespectful and untrue taunt. We follow all our opponents quite closely both before and after we play them. URI wants to get to the post season and our opponents winning games helps us get there. So it is with sincerity that I wish Akron good luck the rest of the season. Hope you win your conference opener versus Miami.
