  1. Been a baseball fan most of my life (started watching the Tribe in 76), and have been to several Zips ballgames a year since starting college. It will be a lot more fun when we have a competitive team again (in 08 we were above .500, hard to believe now).

Having the games on campus was convenient, I went to games between classes. But not many others did. I wouldn't be against playing at Canal Park, the U's games usually start at 3:00 and the Aeros games usually start at 7:00. Maybe they could do a couple double headers.

I'm excited to see how the "new" team plays. I will likely be at more games this year than I have the past couple.

A bit of baseball news to help get ball talk going, I see catcher Scott Saylor's brother Drew has hung up the cleats and is coaching with the Lake Erie Crushers, where he finished his playing career. All the best to him, they're a great couple of guys.

And a question. Does the club baseball team still exist?

Actually, Saylor was going to be an assistant on the Zips this season but was recently hired away by the Rockies organization.

It's too bad for the Zips because Drew knows a lot about the game (and he looked WAYYY better in an Akron uniform compared to a Can't uniform).

  2. I know the hiring of Terry Bowden has excited football fans. Well, the hiring of new baseball coach Rick Rembielak has excited baseball nuts like myself. Coach Rembielak has some decent talent to work with and a VERY good pitching staff. There are several pro talent athletes on this team and I'm expecting this team to turn some heads by May.

Any other baseball fans out there excited for the season?

oh, and here's part one of my five-part preview of this year's team: Zips Baseball Season Preview: Part 1: Outfield

  3. Just a heads up to everyone...and this probably deserves its own thread...BUT everyone mark February 3rd on your calendars. That night (friday) at 9 pm Zips hockey takes on Cincinnati but most importantly UA Athletics Director Tom Wistrcill will be in attendance. The hockey team needs all the support they can get that night to show the AD the level of interest in the program. Though they are averaging 400+ per game, they could use a truly PACKED house on this night (650 could probably fit in the place). So please bring your kids, bring your friends and come on out. A group of about 10 of us will be tailgating around 6pm for the game in the parking lot (beer is allowed) and it's going to be a fun night. Tickets are cheap ($5) and it's free for Akron students.

I'll have more info coming soon, but I have good info that UA is looking into adding a D1 program somewhere on the timeline of 5 years. Either way, this night could help the team get some money from the university and could do a lot for pushing a D1 program through.

And hey, with the whole arena discussion and whether or not to have a hockey facility, this is definitely a good argument!

  4. I just can't see how anyone can like the grey...they look awful. The blue is bearable, but the fact that silver/grey isn't even one of our colors makes me wonder what the whole point is? Are we saying we are only good enough to wear second place (silver)? Whatever happened to GOLD?!

What happened to these?! They have that awesome looking "A" on the shorts and look slick.

  5. Didn't have time to read the whole thing, but yeah! -- Great piece of scouting and arguing his case. So, who's Rudy? A coach, where? edit: Got it:Rudy Roediger is the Athletic Communications Assistant covering men’s and women’s soccer at Notre Dame College and contributing writer for Notre Dame News, International Soccer Network, and Soccer Nation. You can follow him on twitter: @RuudSports ;)

Yep, he's seen Luke play a little bit lol

  6. Well, one thing that I think has been affected by him living on the perimeter is his offensive rebounds per game....

Last year he averaged 2.25 offensive boards per game. This year he's down to 1.95. Sure, it's not a huge difference, but it really hurts when he's one of only maybe two players on the entire team that rebounds properly (the other being Tree, who's not consistently in at the same time as the Serb) and he's not in position a lot of the time.

  7. Thanks for posting that.

I think it's interesting that Jimmal has not only made a great career (and some pretty decent cash) for himself in France, but evidently a great life there as well. I'm pretty sure he's become a French citizen. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

And great for J Wood that he's escaped the Finnish tundra for France, where the weather's not only better but I'm sure the pay is, too.

BTW, can you imagine if Jeremiah was on this current Zips roster? Almost scary to consider what our front court would be like with a beast like him added to the mix.

If J-Wood was on the Zips current roster and had the ability to play a position other than center, he would DOMINATE. Though Harney and Treadwell wouldn't be getting many minutes.

Oh and if he keeps playing the way he is at Pro-B, he may soon find himself with a team at a higher level. I mean he isn't just playing well, he's dominating.

  8. IMO his low post play has regressed this year. For the good of the team I wish he would work harder down low. I wonder if the success he has found outside of the arc has effected that?

That was my concern early on...but over the last few weeks he's really stepped up his game. Maybe he can find a balance and become even more of a threat than he was before.

  9. In the past, I've been critical of Nik for heaving up three-pointers...even when open. But upon looking at his stats and witnessing a few big shots in recent weeks, I'm beginning to think twice about my disdain for him shooting from outside.

He's shooting 11-for-30 now on the year (36.7%)...not too shabby. Any thoughts?

Oh, and I have a poll up at ASN if you want to vote:

When Nikola Cvetinovic Lines up for an Open 3-Pointer, What Goes Through Your Head?

  10. Athleticism wins college games. If the kid doesn't have enough, he doesn't get a scholarship. Also, giving a kid at a school a scholarship to make up for a decision a past coach made isn't a good reason to get a scholarship. Not many compelling reasons to give this kid a scholarship.

I wasn't implying Bowden should give him a scholarship just because of what Ianello did. I was critical before of Ianello under-appreciating Schrock and was being a homer. Essentially, I meant that it would make it up to me...and Wadsworth. It was an entirely facetious comment.

As far as athleticism, Snowball has plenty. He could make it in the MAC and his attitude and hustle would be a great asset to any team. So i'm not saying he would be a star, but he sure as hell is worth a scholarship with so much of an upside and little risk (other than the injuries that are 100% healed and non issues from what i've heard).

  11. Zeke is a little soft & Nic can't jump. Tree has to be the man down low, but he had a terrible game tonight. Maybe trying too hard against McCrae?

I'm talking about more than the big men.

We don't rebound well, we don't go up strong when we get the ball near the hoop on offense, we don't use our bodies on defense, etc.

We play soft and we play small for long stretches. That's gotta stop.
