  1. So, you are the type of person that actually makes public threats on forums, after initiating the insult chain, yet I'm childish?

LOL, if you really want to fight, which is hilarious and stupid, PM me the time of day you are coming and we can settle this...like...men

And why should I get home field advantage? Embarrassed of where you live or something? :thumb:

    Typical internet pussy.

And since name calling is apparently acceptable now, I expect this comment to stand.

  2. Actually it doesn't, I was there at the pep rally when he said it, tool bag. It was right before we played VA Tech. It's a word for word quote.

"What the hell is a Hokie anyway, some kind of stupid turkey or something, at least we know what the hell we is...we's a ZIP!"

Again, you prove my point, you can only understand the black and white that is front of you. No room for higher level thinking.

When listing quotes most people fix the English for the person. Very common in sports, where comments are often made in the heat of a moment and grammar mistakes are plentiful. For you to leave it word for word is an insult. If the same quote was on a Can't message board, it would be to make fun of him. Your being present is irrelevant.

You seem to like running your mouth though. If you're so tough, post your address and I'll pay you a visit.

  3. The only trolls on here are you and the rest of the Suckeye fans that think Akron is an inferior program. And let's not discuss mental abilities since you can't even fathom something other than what is black and white in front of you, and you struggle with identifying that 95% of the time.

    Go back to bucknuts.

Your signature makes fun of our former QB. Stay classy.

  4. That's like saying "kind of depressing to think $1 million is better than $100,000."

If people would show up to MAC games regardless of having gone to the school, kind of like some place I know in Central Ohio, then we wouldn't lose coaches like this because the conference would have more money.

There is no reason the MAC Championship game shouldn't be played in front of 50,000 or more fans. There were less fans in Detroit then at the NIU @ Toledo game.

And it's not quality of product, I watch a lot of football, and 8 out 10 times the MAC game is more exciting then the "Big school game" (fortunately we don't televise UMASS that much)

Wow, thanks for explaining that it was money. I had no idea how the world worked.

I'm not sure WF is even a great basketball gig anymore, let alone football. But one of our top teams just lost their coach to a bad ACC team, which is arguably the weakest of the "big" conferences. (especially now that they added ND :) )

Reading this article is also depressing:

    Odell Spencer

  5. Well it did mention new or renovated arena by 2020, so that was semi-specific/interesting

If I read it correctly, it only promised a facility plan by 2020. Anyone else interpret it that way?

It's a neat bit of marketing material, but not much beyond that. There's no way to guarantee all those conference championships for example.

  6. Not all of it, of course.

But this is the perfect illustration of how mid-major college football is not sustainable. When you NEED to go to a big school to play for a seven figure payout, when you NEED to put your top teams up against the conference cupcakes to get them into a higher bowl, something is wrong. It is not sustainable. You can't keep up with the 80 scholarships and million dollar coaches and big recruiting budgets without prostituting yourself out. We are not Texas.

One reason is what happens if that gravy train derails?

The Doylestown Chipps won a playoff game this year. That was the most excited I have been at a football game in a very long time. They weren't playing out of their league, they can't play with the big Catholic schools and the Mentors. Who cares. It was a great time. There's a lesson in there somewhere for anyone who will listen. GP1 would understand.

Great point. When the gravy train derails, we start to cut sports, cut salaries, and the program as a whole suffers.

I would guess we still get those games, but against lesser opponents and smaller payouts.

  7. I noticed in the last ZipsLine from TW that the University is set to announce a "New Strategic Direction" with regards to sports on Monday.

Has anybody heard rumors about what will be announced? Are we adding/dropping sports? Moving some sports to a new conference?

I'm very curious on this one.

Yeah that was weird. It's all the way at the bottom, so maybe nothing major? Oddly vague though.

  8. I saw a commercial for the MAC a few years ago that stated the MAC alumni base is the largest of any D-1A conference in the country. I don't know if this is accurate or not, but the point remains that the MAC alumni base is huge. If the MAC alums had the same enthusiasm and allegiance as B10 alums, the MAC would have plenty enough fans to justify what advertisers charge. However, these alums have no enthusiasm for or allegiance to their native institution. Instead, many are fans of B10 schools because they play "major" sports. This lack of loyalty is the very essence of why I can't stand OSU. The traitor fans are the worst because they remove support for MAC schools and give it directly to the B10 who we compete with (regardless of what many on here insist). The casual non-OSU alums are bad too but they are just bandwagoners. I have no problem with OSU alum like Buckzip who are biased in supporting their school. We are the same way with the Zips and this is why I love listening to Frenchy. Go Zips!

Most of the people you refer to grew up as fans of OSU, Michigan, ND, etc. You can't expect that they'll suddenly abandon that. People don't pick schools to attend based on the sports teams, they're there to get a degree. And they're paying out the ass for it. No one is obligated to drop their allegiances simply because they were comfortable with a school based on academics.

But you're getting back to my main point. You say we compete with OSU. If that were true, NIU would be in the top 5 at least. Instead, they're not considered equal to multi-loss AQ teams.

  9. Good post.

You are exactly correct in what I put in bold. It gets little attention because the national championships are played at a time when everyone is talking NFL playoffs and BCS bowls. Play it at a time when fans aren't talking about the two biggest football groups, or much at all for that matter, and you may really have something. "Hit'em where they ain't." - Willie Keeler

I think you're referring to the spring idea, correct? It is surprising to me that as big as football is in this country, all levels of it are played at the same time. High school I get, kids play multiple sports. But you'd think something would have worked at a different time.

  10. Back to the original premise of this thread: If NIU goes to a second straight BCS bowl game, it would be a phenomenal accomplishment for a team with MAC-level resources. It's a goal that UA should aim for, and it's achievable with Coach Bowden, Coach Amato and others like them. If the Zips could do what NIU is in the process of doing, the Big Dialer would be full every weekend and the Zips would be the darling of the media, both local and national. That level achievement generates huge national attention because Americans love scrappy underdogs. By comparison, winning a national championship in a lower division is a yawner to most sports fans and barely gets mentioned in the media. I'd rather have the Zips be the scrappiest little fish ever seen in the big pond than the biggest fish in a little puddle. Think Bigger was a great theme for the Zips basketball team. Think Smaller is a horrible theme for the Zips football team.

The two things I remember about NIU from last year - their coach left for a bigger job before they even got to play that game, and Herbstreit ripped them to shreds for being in a BCS game. People like underdogs, I agree, but that was the least-anticipated of all the BCS bowl games.

What I would propose is essentially copying what will happen with the playoff next year. Take the 4 best teams from the non-AQ conferences, have them play in bowls for semi-finals and a championship. I have no proof, but I think that would draw more interest than watching a game where everyone knows the outcome. You're going to put them in games that could serve as the semi-finals anyway, and there are tons of bowls no one cares about that could be swapped out for the "mid-major championship".

And let's be honest - the NCAA doesn't want NIU in those games. They need large programs with lots of fans to justify what they charge advertisers. Unfortunately, no MAC team can provide that.

There is zero chance of a MAC team making the four team playoff next year. If they expand to eight, there will still be zero chance.

I guess in the end it's not worth worrying about. We're not exactly rolling in conference championships, let alone something larger.

  11. Very simple. It is because those working in athletic departments at our level are not interested in rocking the boat because they want to be an AD at the BCS level. Their potential career advancement comes at the expense of the schools they work for.

Our enemy is within, not external: Athletic Directors and league commissioners.

I hate that this is probably the answer. As with all things in life, follow the money.

I think I would include coaches as well, but maybe you were too. I like Coach Bowden, so hopefully no one takes this as a slam, but in what other occupation is he going to get 300k with tons of perks? Plus, even if you fail miserably (last coach) you can still get someone stupid enough (Weis) to keep hiring you.

  12. I started this thread asking why the MAC is considered a D1 conference even though we're not given the same opportunities as other D1 conferences. It was quickly hijacked by OSU haters, which is strange to me.

Look, the MAC doesn't get the same chances the Big Ten gets. So Akron does not compete with OSU. Let it go. Our rival is Can't State.

The vast majority of incoming freshman to Akron (that are college FB fans) are going to be OSU fans. At one point there were quite a few ND fans in this state, but that hasn't been the case for quite some time. If you want to get more people on-board with the Zips, you're going to have to reach out to OSU fans. Akron games have three things for northeast Ohio FB fans that OSU doesn't - more available tickets, more affordable tickets, and a short drive.

It's foolish to think you're going to get kids growing up as Akron fans instead of OSU fans. They have their own network and are on national tv pretty consistently. We have ESPN3.com and a channel on Time Warner, the worst cable provider in the area. Braxton Miller alone is currently getting his third SI cover. I can envision few scenarios where we'd get anyone on one.

Whatever hatred and jealousy you have, get over it. Conferences like the MAC are positioned by the NCAA as an alternative. That's why we get Tuesday night games.

My point is - why can't the alternative get their own champion? Why is our ultimate aspiration a BCS bowl against an opponent with far more financial resources?

  13. And so what? What if it is true and it isn't a negative. Stanford is big and slow. Oregon is small and fast. Big and slow won.

I think this actually argues my point. Oregon was ranked higher before that game, again because of the "fast" perception.

That's why NIU is ranked too low. Again, if that were Akron, you'd be pissed.

Sort of off the main point, but here's how ESPN views the MAC. Notice our FPI is dead last:

    Conference Rankings

    And here's each team:

    FPI and Team Efficiencies

We're 108 and ranked lower than Purdue, one of the worst Big Ten teams in recent memory.

I really don't see how "the Big Ten sucks" helps us in any way at all.

  14. I live in an SEC state and attend at least two sec games a year. I can assure you that nobody at sec games is sitting around talking about slow midwest teams.

Do you really expect anyone to believe that? There's this thing called the internet. I guess I'd only have to ignore half of it to believe SEC fans don't brag about speed.

You, and others, have such a blinding jealously of OSU's success, that it skews your reality. It makes the first quote in your signature line quite hilarious.

Amazingly enough, it's possible for both OSU and Akron to be successful. Get over it.

  15. And so what? What if it is true and it isn't a negative. Stanford is big and slow. Oregon is small and fast. Big and slow won. Again, Big Ten fans need to drop the paranoia and embrace the league for what it is.

The point is this - pretend we were NIU. Undefeated, and a legitimate Heisman trophy candidate at QB.

Yet our QB wouldn't have a chance in hell of winning that Heisman, and we couldn't sniff the top 10, let alone top 2.

Am I really to believe everyone on this board would be happy, saying oh well, that's pretty good for us, we wouldn't want to play any of those top teams anyway?

    Give me a break.

National perception of all midwest teams is the same. Anyone stating otherwise simply doesn't pay attention. And to say it's not a negative is hilarious. That Oregon team you mention is one of the many two-loss teams ahead of NIU. The coaches poll is even worse. NIU is 18th! Again, you'd be happy if our undefeated Zips were sitting that low?

  16. That is not the national perception of the the MAC or even close to the national perception. It's the perception of those who want the world to revolve around whatever large regional conference they live around.

Believe what you want to believe. The perception of the midwest is big and slow. I've seen it mentioned and discussed many times. Big Ten, MAC, ND are in that discussion. And Nebraska was even when they were in the Big 12.

    Here's an example from mrsec.com:

"Look at the overall bowl records for the Big Ten and the MAC and you have to wonder just how much talent remains in the American Midwest as people migrate to the South and to the West. No wonder Midwestern teams and leagues are searching for ways to reach the prospects in the Sun Belt region."
